Piano was the instrument I ran to when I was tired of classical guitar in college. As a consequence, I develop a very special relationship with it. I've learned to use it as a vehicle for expressing music in a way that's more free than any instrument that I do. Things I teach on piano usually include...

-Basic technique: scale fingerings, finger mechanics, dynamic posture
-Music Learning: how the piano makes music easier than with any other instrument, and what is the most efficient way to learn music
-Improvisation: how to explore music freely using easy keyboard techniques
-Composition: how to find and discipline your creativity through exploratory piano exercises

About Jonathan

I studied music therapy and music theory at Temple University from '06-'10. Learned a lot. Then again, I learned even more teaching at a school for kids with learning disabilities and working as a traveling street performer. Once you see the world and work with some unexpected challenges, you learn

Jonathan is incredibly skilled, a great teacher, fun, and very patient with our gregarious and somewhat distracted 9-year old boy. He has creative, tailored teaching techniques, will try new things, but also keeps our son motivated and progressing. He responds perfectly and patiently to my son when he veers off task, and gets him back on task. We are absolutely thrilled and couldn't have found a better teacher.

My son has special needs related to an anoxic brain injury. This can create frustration with simple things like learning a new chord that feels funny or is difficult to move your fingers to. He always checks in with us to see what concerns we have and then, helps us by offering suggestions on how to make something easier or less frustrating to learn. I think Jonathan does a good job of meeting us where we are. Jonathan is patient with both of us. Today, he talked to my son about practicing communicating so we can understand how to help him learn. He talked to me about it being ok to break away from the timing and to hit chords at the same time as my son so the song can come together.

Jonathan is flexible and easy to work with. My son has some struggles as a result of an anoxic brain injury. Jonathan is very understanding and patient with my son. He has also helped me with advice and suggestions on how to work with my son. We love the spirit of the ukulele and the good vibes it has.

I have run my own private studio in both Peru and the United States and can give lessons in either English or Spanish. I took more than a decade of private piano lessons in the US and continued my studies at the university level. I have been teaching piano ever since I graduated. I help students learn a variety of styles from classical to jazz to pop. Something that I especially emphasis is improv and composition which is something we can get started with at any level and we usually dabble in from the first lesson. I teach students age four and up. Anyone can enjoy playing the piano and I help students play the songs that most interest them while making sure they are well-rounded musicians!

About Laney

I have been playing piano since the age of eight under the tutelage of various instructors. I maintained a full-time studio in Lima, the capital of Peru, where I taught piano to embassy and other expat families for several years before moving to the US. I am fluent in both English and Spanish and h

"I have only been taking lessons for a short amount of time, but I feel as though I have learned SO much. We started from the basics and Ingrid did an amazing job at gaging the level I was at and working accordingly. She is so sweet and patient and really helps you learn all the basics one needs to play piano proficiently. After only five lessons, I was already playing entire songs. I'm excited to continue our lessons!"

"I took introductory piano lessons with Joao for approximately 2 years. It was a superb experience. Joao does an excellent job in balancing several elements - understanding music theory, developing sight reading skills, learning the manual/physical processes. He makes sure to vary the lesson experience to keep building momentum, allowing the student to demonstrate progress, and most importantly, building an appreciation and joy about music. Joao has versatility across genres, exposing the student to jazz, classical, pop, and world music. Joao is an excellent piano teacher, and I would unreservedly recommend him."
