Kevin asked pertinent questions about my background and used that information to tailor the first lesson. He went beyond the scheduled 30 minutes to provide a complete and coherent beginning to my studies: the extra time did not upset my schedule and I appreciated his going beyond to get me off to a good start. Kevin had a lot of stuff to present yet allowed me to interrupt with questions, which he knowledgeably answered. His personality is relaxed and friendly. Observing him with another student before my lesson, I saw that he offered criticism considerately.
My first lesson was a good experience (4 stars). I don't know if he is the best ever (5 stars), but he must be darn close.

Amy W.

Saint Paul, MN

About Amy

As I child I had an early interest in music, dancing and creative things. I took piano lessons and excelled at my chosen instrument, the flute, in band at school. I continued with my music training at Northwestern College in Roseville, Minnesota and graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Music Education in 1992. I worked for 11 years in my profession in various settings before I took a break to start my family. My experience includes teaching students in classroom general music, choir, band, piano lessons, and school plays/musicals. I spent six years at a private school (grades K-8
), three years at a charter elementary school and 2 years at a public elementary school. Also, since graduating in 1992 I have spent a total of 17 years teaching private lessons both at Hovland Conservatory of Music and in my home. Along the way I further broadened my background by accompanying church choirs and congregations, playing for weddings, and volunteering to lead children’s music time at church.

I love music of all kinds and have a strong belief that everyone should experience the joy and power of it in his or her life. It is very rewarding for me to help students develop their skills as they discover a meaningful way of self-expression using a universal language. Teaching music is something I love to do and I know that fact reflects to my students resulting in an enjoyable experience for them as well.

*** Lesson Details ***
What can a student/parent expect from lessons with me? I can provide my students with a solid foundation of proper technique. This is so very important because you do not ever want to have to unlearn bad habits. I also include appropriate music theory, ear training and improvising for each level. I purposefully pace the lessons to prevent students from feeling frustrated. Instead, I work to generate excitement about the learning process and keep students motivated by their own progress. Furthermore, I am willing to accommodate a student if they have a special interest in a certain musical genre or a personal goal they are working towards. I encourage, but do not require students to take advantage of recital and performance opportunities that I provide.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Large music room: piano, flute, clarinet, trumpet, and mouth pieces for trombone, french horn and sax, snare drum

*** Specialties ***
I have a lot of experience teaching students who are brand new to their instrument. I believe the beginning is a very important time to start building a solid foundation for all future musical growth. I love being able to help my students establish good habits from the beginning and influence the overall direction of a new student’s musical experience.

I love music of all kinds and have fun playing and teaching all the instruments that I listed. However, the two instruments that I have the most training on and have performed on are the piano and the flute. I would be a great teacher for private lessons to help a student excel in band at school or for a high school student preparing for contests or auditions. Also, I am very patient with beginners and would be ideal as a child'€™s first piano teacher or for an adult who has always wanted to play a certain instrument of his or her choice.

We only had one lesson with Amy, but I was impressed and I give her a 5. She was very patient with Josh, even when Josh wasn't very focused. I was impressed with how she conducted her lessons, even though her children were home. They were very respectful of our lesson time and never had an interruption. That says a lot about Amy's dedication to focus on her students.

Jamison loved his first lesson so much he came home and IMMEDIATELY started practicing for the next one! Amy is an awesome teacher. Both our daughters take lessons from her as well. She was a wonderful presence with the children. She is very complimentary and explains things clearly. Even I learn musical vocabulary and techniques during their lessons! I highly recommend her as a teacher.

I was searching and searching until...Bing! Eric's website came up and I read over and it and soon enough it was my first lesson! He has gone slow and has taught me at my own pace. He is an amazing guy. He gets to know you and makes sure your comfortable and not awkward. He makes sure your doing well and even if you dont get it on the first try, you will always get it at the end! I suggest him to all ages.

Eric is a great teacher. My daughter and I both take lessons from him. He has a passion for music that is infectious and inspiring. He has a distinct teaching style that is fun and challenging. I have taken lessons at several different places but never saw the increase in skill and enjoy-ability that I've gotten in the past year of lessons with Eric. Highly recommend to beginners or those looking to take their skills to the next level.

Colin M.

Saint Paul, MN

About Colin

*Lessons with Colin have moved to an exciting new location! A recently finished home music studio now features two full drum kits, a P.A and sound insulation for a quality learning experience!

I am a 30 year old drummer with 20 years of experience spanning all genre's and styles of music. Countless hours of stage performance with bands. A love, drive and passion for music and drumming you won't find in any other instructor! Multiple studio recordings both behind the mixing board and behind the drum set. 10 years of teaching experience, realizing the importance of setting a unique curriculum
for each student tailored to fit each individual's goals and interests. I have been involved in bands ever since middle school, starting with rock, and moving on to perform in country bands, hip-hop performances, indie rock bands, and progressive rock bands. A strong knowledge of jazz techniques and music theory as well as the ability to read drum sheet music make me a perfect instructor for any student.
I have had many beginner and intermediate level student's and have become proficient in determining what skills each individual student needs to work on as well as helping students progress in their interests, keeping the lessons fun and the student motivated. I can easily transcribe any song as well! So any song you might want to learn, even if there is no sheet music, is totally doable. I love working in odd time signatures and I prefer fancy hi-hat work over heavy double-bass drum use. Progressive / Indie rock is my favorite genre of music to play, but I have tons of fun playing hip-hop, punk, metal, I dabble in jazz, Latin rhythms, and pretty much anything else. I'm always excited to play drums, and I pass this excitement on in my teachings.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons and curriculum's are built around a students experience level, age, and goals. Students will learn the fundamentals of drumming, as well as the ability to add flair and pizzazz to their playing. Within the first 3 months, a beginning level student will have the ability to play basic beats found in many styles of music, as well as feeling comfortable playing to a metronome and keeping time. Lessons will include routines to be practiced by the student on their own time, as well as fun, exciting techniques to keep students interested and motivated to continue playing.
Each Lesson will hold its own highlights depending on the student. I believe getting to know the student and their goals for their drumming is one of the most important aspects of teaching lessons. Understanding whether the student is looking to drum as a hobby and for fun will change the lesson style dramatically compared to a student looking to make a living off drumming. The types of routines, styles and techniques taught should fit into helping the student reach their desired destination.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in the basement, full band rehearsal set up with 2 drum kits, one for the student, one for the teacher.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would expect the student to have a drum set and drum sticks. I can provide a drum set for lessons but it is important for the student to have a drum set or practice pad to practice.

*** Specialties ***
I have touched on almost every genre of music. I specialize in rock, progressive rock and fusion.

I am very happy to have selected Colin as my drum teacher. He is patient and explains concepts clearly. I find that he provides helpful feedback identifying both what I am doing correctly and where I need to adjust. He adjusts the lessons to my progress, so I feel that I am receiving individualized instruction. I am a long time educator and know good instruction when I see it, and I see it in him!

Colin has been a great inspiration in my son's playing. It has brought a level of creativity and improvisation that he just wasn't learning from other teachers. He truly cares about his students and has a positive energy that helps motivate my son to be a better player. Colin has the chops and spectacular sense of timing and song memory. I would recommend Colin to students of all age and ability levels.
