About Me

I fully enjoy teaching music and theater to others and spreading the art of performance, reaching out to all generations. I believe in customizing every lesson to be unique for my students in a way that will serve their individual needs. I teach with patience and encouragement and believe that students prosper and improve much more from a positive experience. My lessons are intended to be fun and influential in a positive light that can lead to a rewarding career, hobby, or just for personal enjoyment!

Every since I was a little girl, I have been devoted to the arts. When I began college, I knew that music was my path. As a music major I developed a deeper understanding of music theory, piano, voice, and theater. I received my A.A. in Music at College of the Desert and my Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Redlands- which I attended on a music scholarship. I have played leading roles in several operas and musicals in Southern California, including Gianni Schicchi, Die Fledermaus, La Boheme (DTL nominee), The Impresario, The Grand Duke, Patience (DTL award), Cosi fan tutte, Little Women the Musical, Seussical the Musical, and many more. I have also appeared in several concerts, opera scenes, competitions (winning music scholarships and theater awards), and worked as a singer at churches, restaurants, and in pop bands. I continue to perform and study music because performing is a part of who I am and I could never live without it.

With this experience under my belt, I feel a desire to pass on my knowledge to students. I carry a strong passion to help people develop their abilities and make them their own. I truly believe that if someone wants something out of life then they WILL achieve it with dedication, perseverance, confidence, and by having FUN doing it!

*** Lesson Details ***
I begin each voice and acting lesson with a warm-up to prepare the student for their lesson. Next, we do a series of exercises specially designed to help each individual develop their skill in a way that best fits them. We then work on a piece of their choice for the remainder of the lesson, perfecting their technique and helping them become performance ready. I teach with patience and fun because I feel that this is the key to achieving goals and inspiring a good habit of practice.

If you do not already have a song, sheet music, or monologue (acting students) to bring in I can help you choose one during your first lesson. I also require that my students keep a practice journal to record their daily practice sessions. If possible, please bring a recording device of some sort so you can record your lessons. It is a HUGE help to be able to listen back on your lessons and to use them in your daily practice! No experience is necessary, that is what I'm here for!

About Me

Hello! My name is Chris. I'm a private tutor and piano teacher in and around Seattle. I have a terrific time learning about the things I enjoy in life. I would like to share this kind of fun with you or your son or daughter!

Piano lessons and tutoring. Reading, writing, math, test prep, poker. Affordable, fun, professional, effective.

TEACHING QUALIFICATIONS

Academics: B.A. from Columbia, 2370 SAT (800 Math, 800 Reading, 770 Writing), 1590 GRE (800 Verbal, 790 Math), seven years' tutoring experience, all ages, almost all abilities.

Piano: repertoire from Beethoven to Chopin to Ravel to Mussorgsky, experience as a symphony and opera critic in college, comprehensive knowledge of classical music and music theory, 15 years' experience playing, all ages, beginner to strong-intermediate abilities.

PHILOSOPHY

Academics: I tutor because I want to work against the worst aspects of school, and embody the best ones. I tutor to make school more worthwhile and more fun for my students. I tutor to relieve anxiety and frustration and stress. I tutor to help students cultivate their sense of curiosity. I'll raise your or your kid's grades by putting school in the right context, and giving them the skills to deal with it, emotionally and intellectually.

Piano: My lessons are fun. I love music, and I can help you love it too! I want to teach you how to play what you want to play, how you want to play it, and to that end I promote a relaxed atmosphere while also gently emphasizing technical skills to bring out your musicality. This doesn't mean you won't learn --” quite the contrary! --” it means that you'll be put in a better mindset to learn, since you'll have a great time coming to lessons and you'll want to practice. I can motivate you to discover what you like most about music and enjoy the gift of musicianship well into adulthood.

MORE SPECIFICS

Reading and writing: Everyone needs language skills. With the rise of the Internet, the increasing difficulty and subjectivity of college admissions, and the competition for scarce jobs hinging on rsums, interviews, and communication skills, a proficiency in reading and writing is more critical than ever before. I've written for, and been paid by, several different websites on topics ranging from modern TV to old literature and card games. I was an English literature student at Columbia. I read and write compulsively. I tutored writing in 2007 to students ages 9 to 18, and was a content editor and proofreader for a boutique educational-software firm in 2007, 2008, and 2011-2012.

Math: Nearly every math class could be aced by a majority of students, but math is poorly taught. I can help by teaching conceptually. In high school, I was three years ahead in math, finishing AP Calculus AB as a sophomore, AP Statistics as a junior, and AP Calculus BC as a senior. I scored a 5 on each of those AP tests. I played poker (a math-based game) professionally from 2010 to 2011.

Test prep: Test-prep is one of the easiest and cheapest investments you can make. My SAT score was 800 in Math, 800 in Reading, and 770 in Writing. My GRE scores were 800 in Verbal and 790 in Math. I got 5'™s on the AP US History, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, and Statistics tests, and 4'™s on the English Language and Composition and European History tests. As a poker player, I'™m well-versed in the '˜strategic'™ aspect of test-taking.

---

My lessons are affordable. For music or academic tutoring, my rate is well below the industry standard at expensive aggregators.
If you're interested in my services for any of these subjects, please don't hesitate to contact me!

Best, CML

One lesson with me, and you will be hooked!

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons will primarily begin with an introduction to the mathematical concept, followed by examples to demonstrate how the concept is used and then finally questions will be assigned for students to attempt in order to make sure they have grasped the material. At the end of each session, the students will have more questions to practice on their own seeing as the key to succeeding in mathematics is to practice.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Not applicable. Lessons given via Skype or Google hangouts, with 'equipment' being a laptop or desktop with a webcam and speaking device.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Not applicable. Lessons will be given via Skype or Google hangouts so clients can learn in the comfort of their home without the hassle of having to travel to a location; money for gas is saved.

Since I believe strongly that everyone can do mathematics and love it, I am very patient in breaking down concepts for my students and specialize in relating mathematics to every day life. I find that mathematics is most useful when applied to present day situations and I tend to incorporate concepts into already-known phenomena.

About Me

I'm a 27 year old graduate of Columbia University, where I studied International Relations with a pre-medical concentration. Having taken a variety of courses and standardized tests, I'm intimately aware of what it takes to succeed in academic settings. I'm currently working towards a Master's Degree in Women & Gender Studies. Subsequently, I plan to apply to medical school.

Regarding tutoring, I have four years of experience and have several references. I've tutored all ages (elementary school students - graduate students) and specialize in math/science subjects. I also have achieved success with my students regarding the SAT, ACT, MCAT, GRE, and LSAT exams. My students have gone on to attend Ivy League undergraduate as well as graduate institutions.

As far as expectations, I expect my students to just try their hardest. I assign homework after every session and am big on giving and receiving feedback. It's important to me to that the student and/or parent is completely satisfied with my tutoring.

At the end of the day, my first priority are my students and ensuring that they understand and are comfortable with the material in question. Not only will this help with their overall self-esteem, but they'll be armed with the skills to tackle their academic obstacles.

While I do have a 36-hour cancellation policy, I offer makeup classes and try to be flexible.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you surpass your academic goals.
