Virginia is full of talented musicians, but they don't often get the recognition they deserve. Country legend Roy Clark is from Meherrin, and jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald was from Newport News. Norfolk also laid the foundation for hip-hop musician and producer Timbaland and rock-and-roll legend Clarence Clemons, saxophone player for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band.

Norfolk music lessons have helped local talent become legends, and the one-on-one attention is an essential part of any musician's path to success. Even the best musicians need instructors to hone their talents and give them the industry secrets before they can make an impact in the business.

TakeLessons is the nation’s premier provider of music lessons, with pre-screened instructors to ensure your safety and an excellent experience. Whether you are 5, 25, or perhaps 85 years old when you make the decision to enter the world of music, you will be changing your life for the positive.

Your relationship with music & your chosen instrument is unique &
will be lifelong.  I look forward to sharing your
excitement as we pursue the path to comfort, confidence & the
eventual, inevitable joy you will achieve with your new friend.

In a calm, easy going atmosphere you can expect to laugh a bit, as it is called 'playing music', as well as become focused & disciplined to succeed.

You will learn to have an understanding of how to read & play a minimum of 3 songs each month, & will be picking up enough music theory as it applies to your instrument each week to feel confident & inspired to continue on as far as you desire.

We will learn how to
'play well with others' in informal as well as more structured gatherings every few months, with no pressure, only compassion & encouragement.

For those wishing to join in the fun of playing bluegrass music, we will start out with technique exercises, scales, basic melodies & accompaniment patterns to prepare you to learn this unique & exciting style of American music. There are many gatherings in the area called 'Pickin' Parties' that I want to get you ready to participate in as soon as is humanly possible.

If you are one of those brave souls undertaking the lovely but challenging fretless instrument, the violin, my main focus is to get you started with the all the necessary basic techniques - holding the instrument & bow correctly, getting the best possible tone & pitch using efficiency & accuracy, mixed with a great deal of ear training & heart.

Specific songs you'd like to learn? Your reward for accomplishing what I deem necessary on whichever instrument you've chosen will be for us to then listen to & analyze your desired piece, & I will then write it out in either tablature or standard notation.

About Barbara
Music has been an integral part of my world, playing a major role in both my personal and professional life. I embrace the chance to be immersed in it, to share my enthusiasm for and expertise in the area of the music education experience, promoting creative development and student performance skills.

I am an original New Yorker but have lived in Virginia Beach for the past 20 years. I began studying piano at the age of 7 and have not stopped playing since. It is a gift and a joy to be able to share my love of music performance with people of all ages and abilities. I have also sung in many choirs in addition to performing professionally on the piano and the guitar, both as a soloist and ensemble member.

I rejoice in the success that I see in my students as they learn and gain an appreciation for the gift of music. They become more
and more eager to share and more and more open to the possibilities ahead.

*** Lesson Details ***
I listen well to my students. They are free and encouraged to express their goals and soon, they become more and more comfortable doing so. They begin to understand that even though I am their instructor, we are working as a team and that my goals for them are directly tied to the goals they have set for themselves.

My teaching style is natural, relaxed and yet, very enthusiastic, all at the same time. I have patience in abundance and my continual student affirmation is well received. I give most attention to personalizing instruction for each of my students. My passion for musical expression is contagious and readily shared. It is a joy to teach music, to contribute to the growth and delight that I witness through a student's progress.

I have taught music to both children and adults, from beginner to advanced levels. My teaching approach remains the same, save for the goals that suit the specific student, which we discover early on, sometimes even at the first session, together, right from the start. I DO ask that a parent sit in on the lesson for my under age 10 students, at the beginning for sure, then at the child/parent's discretion. My beginning students receive the attention necessary to encourage their desire to persevere, which includes positive feedback (which is abundant) and a teaching style that fits his/her level of learning. My student's success is my goal. This is my jubilant mission.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, guitars, Ukulele

*** Travel Equipment ***
I own 4 guitars, 1 classical, 2 acoustic/electric, and 1 electric, which I can provide for the lesson, if necessary.
I own a Baldwin Acrasonic piano.

The students will need to buy their books.

*** Specialties ***
Methods: Clear presentation of the instrument and the most comfortable way to achieve the best playing results. Emphasis on Theory including chords and improvisation.

Styles: From Classical to Broadway to Folk to Rock to Jazz to Blues.
Genres: All

Barbara is a fantastic instructor. I took lessons as a child into my mid teens and quit. I recently decided to start back up. With 20+ years gap in my instruction, I was nervous about finding an instructor who could keep up with me. I knew I could still easily play music but would have LOTS of questions in the interim that I theoretically would have known otherwise playing the given level of music.

Barbara has been a PERFECT fit for what I was looking for in an instructor. She’s been helping me refine my skills and fill in many gaps in my instruction. She’s been wonderfully supportive and encouraging. I’ve felt my confidence grow tremendously over the last month. I can truly sense that she’s as excited to be teaching as I am to be learning.

I HIGHLY recommend Barb, especially to adults looking to rekindle a long lost love of piano<3

We love the fact that he tailors his lessons, homework, and incentives to the needs and interests of each individual student. Hello! My name is Danielle and I'm a strings teacher (don't worry - I teach the fun stuff too!). I've been playing violin since age 5, viola since age 13, and 'cello since age 18. I have Bachelors Degrees in Violin Performance and Music Education from James Madison University, and I play both Violin and Viola in Symphonicity, the volunteer orchestra in Virginia Beach.

I've taught everything from private lessons to private school to public school and am a truly passionate teacher. I currently teach general music, choir and strings at an elementary school but I love to fill my nights/weekends with private students - that's where the real fun is!

I've taught ages 4-44 and all skill levels. I take particular pride in developing technique and fundamental skills while keeping lessons light hearted and fun! It is my ultimate goal to spark
a love and passion for music in each of my students.

I always encourage students to explore music on their own and bring me repertoire that they'd like to play (from their favorite movies, TV shows, video games, etc.). Those are a great and engaging supplement to the solo repertoire I choose!

Send me a message to get to know more about me and my teaching. I look forward to hearing from you!
Musically,
Danielle

Danielle was a very intuitive teacher- she listened to my goals, and helped provide me with a clear path toward them, conquering some of the basics, scales, pentatonic, and such... but also some of the more advanced nuances like harmonics and vibrato. If you are trying to learn violin or fiddle, I'd recommend Danielle.

About Jesse
I have a long track record of teaching in the realm of acoustic music. Beginning in 2010 (while living in Rhode Island) I decided to share my knowledge of stringed instruments as a traveling music teacher. Through the years of performing in various bluegrass outfits, I have always had students eager to learn how to begin or advance their skills in stringed instruments through one on one lessons, coaching, and jamming with others. During the 2015-2016 school year I held the position of Music Therapist In Residence at the CITE School in Providence, RI working with developmentally challenged and disabled students, which allowed me greater insight into different coaching and music education techniques. I am currently endorsed by Ear Trumpet Labs of Portland, OR and The Deering Banjo Company.

If you're looking to start fresh, brush up, or
get some coaching/advice on advanced improvisation techniques on the banjo, we can get it done together! If you're ready to start down the road and learn the rudiments of guitar, mandolin, or upright bass, we can start that journey. If you're trying to figure out where you fit in in a jam situation: let's find you a spot!

In addition to these education services I also provide a recording of each lesson using a variety of state of the art equipment, including Ear Trumpet Labs microphones and the Zylia Mobile Recording Studio. I look forward to hearing from you, and hope that we can work together to unlock your inner musician.

I am a singer, guitarist, songwriter, and recording artist. I have played music, specifically guitar, for the last 15 years. I specialize more in music theory, dynamics, and expression when playing. Students can expect to improve week to week in their knowledge of theory technique, strumming, knowledge of their guitar and chords. Every person is unique in their style, and depending on the goals and preference of the student- the lessons can take various shapes and feels.

With songwriting, having recorded a small worship album and lead many local cohorts to introduce new, vibrant, and truthful congregational worship songs- I am able to enable the student to find a potential avenue in songwriting and leading a band.

I've been influenced by many styles of music, from southern blues to folk; from gospel to contemporary Christian music. M

About Emma
Hello! My name is Emma S. and I have been playing violin for 10+ years. I started out taking Strings class in school, and from there I began a long career of taking private lessons and playing in orchestras all the way through high school graduation. My primary teacher was the late Thomas Lindsay, concertmaster of Symphonicity. For college, although I studied visual arts at VCU's School of the Arts, I continued playing violin as a member of the VCU Symphony all four years.

My instruction focuses on the individual student's needs and goals, and it draws from my years of experience performing and participating in various workshops, such as the JMU Spring Strings Thing, Tidewater Intergenerational Orchestra, and the Virginia Youth Symphony Orchestra. I have a special interest in helping students gain the confidence to share their playing
with others.

Some examples of the students I'm interested in tutoring are: Elementary school students just starting out and learning the basics; Middle and High school students who want to improve in their orchestra classes and play more advanced pieces; Adults interested learning to play or picking violin back up.

For teaching I use Essential Elements books for beginners and Suzuki books, as well as various exercise, scale and arpeggio books. Bach is a favorite of mine.

In addition, I will work with students on Concertos and any material a student wants to bring to a lesson to look at (fiddle music is welcome!). I am very observant and thorough, and pay attention to how each student grasps the concepts. It's important to me that the student understands how to practice correctly when they're by themselves.

My instruction includes:
1. Assisting those learning the basics of violin and music theory.
2. Instruction to improve technique.
3. Helping those who want to play in school orchestras or ensembles.

I begin by assessing what each student already knows and what they have trouble with, what they want to learn, then we work together from there.

As a result, my students will know what and how to practice, and will enjoy a learning environment that is, most importantly, encouraging.

My lessons are enthusiastic and concentrated; after all, violin is an engaging instrument that will enrich your life with its beauty - even if you don't often play for other people.
