Saturn, often referred to as the “Jewel of the Solar System,” is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second largest in our solar system. It’s known for its complex and spectacular ring system, which is not unique to it but is certainly the most impressive of all planets. Saturn is a gas giant primarily made of hydrogen and helium, similar to Jupiter.

Saturn has a diameter of 74,898 miles, making it nearly 10 times wider than Earth. Approximately 750 Earths could fit inside of Saturn. Despite its size, Saturn has a very short day, spinning on its axis once every 10 hours and 39 minutes. However, a year on Saturn is much longer than on Earth, taking approximately 10,759 Earth days or about 29 Earth years to complete one orbit around the Sun.

Saturn’s atmosphere is known for its strong winds that can reach up to 1,100 miles per hour, much faster than those on Jupiter or any tornadoes on Earth. These winds contribute to the storms on Saturn that can last for months or even years. One of the most notable storms was the “Dragon Storm” in 2004 which created mega-lightning 1,000 times more powerful than lightning on Earth.
