Mercury, the smallest planet in our solar system, is a celestial body of great interest. It’s just a little bigger than Earth’s moon and is the closest planet to the Sun. However, it’s not the hottest planet - that title goes to Venus. Mercury has a solid surface that is covered with craters and it doesn’t have any moons or rings. It likes to keep things simple.

Mercury spins around slowly compared to Earth, so one day lasts a long time on Mercury - 59 Earth days to be exact. A year on Mercury goes by fast because it’s the closest planet to the sun. It completes one revolution around the sun in just 88 Earth days. If you lived on Mercury, you’d have a birthday every three months! Because Mercury has a slow spin and short year, it takes a long time for the sun to rise and set there. Mercury only has one sunrise every 180 Earth days!

Mercury is a terrestrial planet. It is small and rocky and doesn’t really have an atmosphere. Each cubic centimeter of Mercury has a density of 5.4 grams, making it the second densest planet after Earth. This is largely due to Mercury being composed mainly of heavy metals and rock. As the iron core of the planet cooled and contracted, the surface of the planet became wrinkled, forming features known as Lobate Scarps which can be up to a mile high and hundreds of miles long.
