Mars, often referred to as the Red Planet, is the fourth planet from the Sun in our solar system. It is the second smallest planet in the solar system after Mercury. Mars is known for its reddish appearance, which is due to iron oxide (or rust) on its surface. Mars has a very thin atmosphere composed mostly of carbon dioxide, with traces of nitrogen and argon. Mars has two small, oddly-shaped moons, Phobos and Deimos. Unlike Earth’s moon, these moons are not spherical but are irregularly shaped, almost like asteroids. Mars is a terrestrial planet with a thin atmosphere, with surface features both like both Earth’s deserts and the polar ice caps of Earth. One of the most notable features of Mars is Olympus Mons, the tallest volcano and largest shield volcano in the solar system. Mars also has what is known as the “Grand Canyon of Mars” or Valles Marineris, which is an extensive canyon system stretching about 2,500 miles across the Martian equator. The exploration of Mars has been an important part of the space exploration programs of various countries, particularly for the potential for human life to survive there.
