Russell R.

Germantown, TN

About Russell

My name is Russell "Rusty" Rainey. I have been a professional guitarist for 25 years. During the past 25 years I have managed the area's largest music stores, opened a Guitar Repair Center and became a "Certified *Fender Guitar Technician" . My experience with other musicians on stage and in the studio is without parallel. A "school" cannot duplicate real world experience. I understand the frustrations associated with finding the right person who understands how to treat you as an individual. A great instructor will not teach out of a book, they will write a book for you. A real Educati
on in "playing guitar" is much broader than what you can learn from a book. I can help you understand the guitar in a practical and logical way, how to become a "guitar player" - not just how to "play the guitar". Lets talk about how I can help you meet your goals.

*** Lesson Details ***
I want to make our time together something that you will look forward to each week. The guitar is a very expressive and diverse instrument. My goal as your instructor is helping you reach your own goal. I teach each student in an individual way based on your interest, and my assessment of how to help you reach those goals, every lesson is time YOUR time! I take time before each lesson planning our time together. Commit 3 months and you will be amazed at what you can accomplish, 6 months and you'll begin to play through songs, after a year you will look back with pride and realize how much you have learned. I consider myself "laid back" and easy to talk too, but I will encourage you to accomplish what I know you can. When you put forth effort forth, and follow your lesson plans, you will have a great experience! ~Rusty

*** Studio Equipment ***
HOME: lessons in dedicated music room, guitars, amps, bass guitar, music stand, cords, cables, picks, tuners, stand.....

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide any materials and or equipment relative to the area of study for myself in addition to the student should that situation present itself.

*** Specialties ***
Classic Rock, Hard Rock, Blues, and Country. I teach "slide" guitar for those students who are interested in learning more about "delta-blues" and rock guitar utilizing the slide in style very similar to Z.Z. Top.

John S.

Collierville, TN

About John

I have been teaching young people and adults how to play musical instruments for over 20 years. A lot of my students are well on their way to a rewarding future with music, some as professionals and others as hobbyists. In addition to being a teacher, I am also a professional performer who has worked in a wide variety of styles and I have a Masters degree in music composition and theory.
One of my main specialties is working with very young students and total beginners. There is a special skill to teaching young children that can only be developed through experience. For the older student, o
r the student who already has a musical background my specialty is helping you learn the styles that have always been of most interest to you. I can also help older students gain a broad understanding of music through some basic music theory.

*** Lesson Details ***
I can teach piano or keyboard to beginners and up to advanced students. On guitar and woodwinds I can teach beginners and up to intermediate level students.
My teaching style is fairly relaxed and very positive, but I will try to keep the lessons on a course that is going to benefit you the most. For younger piano students and beginners I prefer the Alfreds piano system. The songs in the Alfreds books allow for immediate playing and note reading without any tedious memorization. The beginner books contain a lot of fun songs that kids really gravitate toward.
For older students I try to gear the lessons toward whatever musical style you prefer. For students who have only had traditional piano lessons I can teach you how to read pop and jazz chord charts, as well as how to turn those chord charts into fully arranged music. I can also teach improvisation and the skills that are required to play specific styles of music in a professional band.
For my younger guitar students I have a variety of beginner material I have collected over the years, but for my older students I prefer to work on songs of their choice.
My beginner woodwind students will work with a Yamaha method book, while older students can learn improvisation and theory if they like.
I also can lead Orff styled tuned percussion ensembles. The Orff style of music performance allows for students from entirely mis-matched musical backgrounds to play music together, even on their first day of class.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Many keyboards, guitar, bass guitar, saxophone, flute, and four Orff tuned percussion instruments.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide multiple keyboards, a guitar, saxophone, flute and 4 Orff style tuned percussion instruments, as well as countless books and literature.

*** Specialties ***
I play keyboards professionally in jazz, RnB, rock, reggae, Latin rock and other styles. I can help the student who has only had traditional lessons branch out and learn how to read chord charts, which in turn teaches them theory.
I am a certified Orff teacher as well.

John is a great teacher! This was my son's first piano lesson last night. He enjoyed it and also learned quite a bit during the half-hour session. My other son has been taking guitar lessons from John for over two years, and he has been a pleasure to work with during this time. We highly recommend him for lessons of various instruments!

Barbara P.

Memphis, TN

About Barbara

My studio is open to all ages beginning age 12 to adult. Formerly part time faculty at Rhodes College, I accepted a one year contract position at the University of Memphis and finally a position of Assistant Professor, University of Mississippi. I love teaching voice lessons; I love watching my students grow and become better performers and beautiful singers. I love to see them sing with confidence and have fun while making music. Many of my students have been accepted in the Musical Arts at Governor's School; they have excelled in the National Association of Teacher's of Singing competiti
ons and All West Competitions, musical auditions and just wanting to be better choir members. I was recently presented the TN Governors' School Outstanding Teacher for the Arts Award. As a performer, I have had leading roles in opera, musicals and on the concert stage in Tennessee. One of my favorite classes has been with Wesley Balk as he taught the "singing actor". To understand how to use gestures, the eyes, the body movement on stage makes acting fun and brings it to another level.

*** Lesson Details ***
It is most important to learn the basics of singing; we all know how to breathe, but managing the breath both as speakers and singers requires a coordination as we discover the balance of voice and breath. We strive to find that freedom of singing/speaking voice, eliminating hoarseness and eventual vocal damage. We learn to "play" with the voice and not just listen to how we sound, but to experience the art of singing, to become aware of the sensations that good singing allows, to communicate and most of all, have fun as we make progress. And yes, we sing art songs, language songs, songs from musicals and songs that encourage us, inspire us and perhaps excite us to be better today than we were yesterday. I love to see the progress of my young students when bad habits have not become so engrained. I love my adult students who work hard to embrace new ways, better ways and are not afraid to try.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio consists of a piano, a part time accompanist, and a video recorder that allows the student to bring an SD card, review the lesson and learn from it as they practice at home. The studio is separate and includes an adjoining student/parent waiting room. Assignments are made in a required notebook; music is required at the discretion of the teacher.

*** Specialties ***
The singing/speaking voice comes from the same vocal cords. I also assist with those who are having issues with the speaking voice such as developing hoarseness, unable to be heard or understood or simply need to improve the quality of their speaking tone. We hear the sound of speech before we hear the words. If the speaking voice is irritating, the audience is lost to the unpleasantness and misses the message.. There are ways to improve and develop a better presentation. I can assist you.

I am fairly useless when it comes to music but Lauren was incredibly patient and understanding when I fumbled through her beginning lessons. We went at a pace that was not difficult to follow, and I can safely say I learned a great deal from her in just a few lessons, and when I am ready to get back on that horse I will make sure to have her as my instructor.

Lauren taught my son to play acoustic guitar several years ago. She did more than teach him the basics of playing. Lauren's enthusiasm in her love of music was contagious too. My son now plays in his own band, writes music, plays for worship at church and in his school. Lauren has always been an excellent music instructor, but now has expanded her abilities to teach several genres given her bachelor's degree completion. As a music educator, I highly recommend Lauren Jones to any prospective student!

She was my second guitar teacher and she was the best! I owe most of my guitar skills to her and I wouldn't have even been as interested as I am now if it weren't for her. She didn't just teach me, but she also made it a ton of fun. I'm now in a band (Fisherman's Fable) that's just starting out, and I know it wouldn't have happened if she didn't teach me strumming patterns, bar chords, finger picking, and singing while playing ten years ago, and she has only gotten better with her study at Liberty. I put down Acoustic Guitar, but she has also helped me some with classical as well. I'd say stop looking at all the other teachers you're considering, she's the one you want.
