Patty is a natural teacher who intuitively knows to answer questions I did not know I had. She not only shows you "how" to do each technique, she explains "why", so you not only remember the "how", but you get a clearer understanding of what is happening with your knitting to create each stitch. By understanding the anatomy of each stitch and how they all work together, you can easily fix errors and let your creativity run wild, because you are in control! As she teaches you each technique, she will also amaze you with tips from her "bag of tricks", almost magical little ways to do things like get rid of that loose stitch at the edge or tighten up that cable stitch next to your purls. For every technique and tip, she will show you how using both picking and throwing!
Patty has a fantastic sense of humor and moves along at an easy to follow pace, so you will never get lost and never get bored!
Three years later, I am a far more skilled knitter! Cabling and colorwork are now my passions and I am not intimidated by even the most intricate cabled to Fair Isle design, thanks to what I have learned in Patty's Craftsy, Interweave and Annie's online classes! I refer back to them a lot and I giggle out loud, again, to her jokes and often pick up something I missed in previous viewings!
I have enrolled in ALL of Patty's online classes since that first one and I will enroll in every new class she does, because I learn SO much from every single class, every single lesson. No teacher is as informative or enjoyable as Patty Lyons!
If you are thinking about taking a class from Patty, whether in person or online, DO IT! If you only ever take a class from one knitting instructor, Patty Lyons is, hands down, the best choice!"
And they're not alone!

Teaching is a wonderful extension of my work as a professional crochet and knit designer and technical editor. A web search will reveal some of my published work over the last decade. As a craft teacher in the NYC area for over 8 years, I have worked with individuals, groups and classes of all ages and skill levels. Most of my experience focuses on working with older adults and people with special needs. Minors must have a supervising adult present. I do not work with groups of young children.
I have studied the history and mastered the skills to make and teach a vast variety of textile techniques. Please see my experience.
If you are using this site without the assistance of a TL Rep, I recommend the schedule as you go option. I often have openings in my calendar sooner than the site allows. After we make contact, we can choose the best date and time.

I am mostly self-taught, and that, coupled with my youth, gives me a unique perspective when teaching. My first goal is to give my students all of the tools they need to feel confident from the very first lesson- almost all of my students finish the first hour with a handy drawstring bag to keep their new sewing supplies in. I have a specific sewing curriculum for the first 3-5 lessons that helps lay a groundwork for making more exciting things.
After we finish those steps, I work individually with students to make whatever they would like, from Halloween costumes to memory pillows to peplum tops. The choice is

I consider myself to be the "Swiss Army Knife" of crafters. I have delved into nearly every craft and love passing this knowledge onto my students. For these reasons I have a diverse range of crafts I can teach, including: knitting, crochet, embroidery, hairpin lace, needle felting, and shuttle tatting. In addition to my passion for a variety of crafts, I also love teaching a variety of skill levels, from students beginning their first stitch to someone who wants to redesign a pattern.
With a positive attitude and a willingness to learn I can teach you any of a variety of crafts.
