I will briefly go over 12-15 different items that I highly recommend to new guitarists!

Guitar

I started playing guitar and singing when I was 13 (I'm 35 now) when I got a Christmas present from my father. Learning covers for a few years, I eventually started writing my own music around age 16. I also competed in talent shows and sang at church during high school. When I was 18, my friends and I started a jam band.

Since then, I’ve been playing as a solo musician but also playing in various bands and at different types of events. I also have had opportunities to duet with people live sporadically. From 2011-2012, I recorded an album entitled “Wouldlawn, Couldlawn, Shouldlawn.”

This was all in my spare time, I was a waitress since age 19. I didn’t start playing music full time until late 2013. Playing mostly in small bars, coffeehouses, and private events/parties. And in August 2016, I started teaching guitar. Took a total break from playing music. 

To get back into the groove of things, I started my own by doing online concerts. I also started recording music videos for and doing social media lives.

My style is indie folk; and I play a mix of originals and covers. My main singing influences are Gwen Stefani, Karen O from The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Erykah Badu and Fiona Apple. My main music influences are Death Cab for Cutie, The White Stripes & Modest Mouse.

FAQ

What does an actual lesson look like?
I’ll have a lesson packet prepared for you that I’ll email to you 3-5 days before your lesson. The lesson packet will contain everything you’ll need for the next lesson plus video examples of the exercises/songs. 
 
If we had a previous lesson, the first half of the lesson would be a review of the previous lesson to make sure you understand what you just learned so you can move on. Everything you learn will be built on the previous idea or ideas. 

Wait...so I get personal help outside of class?
That's right! I talk with people 1-on-1 to help clear up any questions or confusion that come with learning guitar. During reasonable hours and with patience, of course!

What do I need to start lessons?
The 3 main things you'll need is a guitar, guitar picks, and a guitar tuner or app. I can help you pick out some awesome equipment if needed! Later on, you'll need a guitar capo and extra strings. 
 
Can someone take the class with me?
Yes! I can teach groups of 2-5 people and would offer $5-$15 off per person per lesson, depending on the number of people.

What if I can't make a class?
That's ok! If you let me know within 24 hours of the class we can easily reschedule and you won't get charged. If you cancel less than 24 hours before the lesson, you’ll still be charged for the lesson. In certain emergencies, less than 24 hours would be ok.

Can kids take your lessons?
Yes, ages 10 and up. They'll learn the guitar and eventually play the songs they love in a fun, supportive, and comfortable atmosphere. 

How long will it take me or my child to be good at guitar?
With steady practice, playing for others, and weekly private guitar lessons, kids to adults can play with basic proficiency in as little as 6 months. Some students reach the level of advanced guitarists in as few as 3-5 years, but it will vary. 

The bottom line is that it's not the songs you practice, but that you spend time playing the guitar. To see the best results, I recommend practice 5-6 days a week, 30-min a day. 

What happens after I purchase lessons?
I'll send you a New Student Packet (as soon as I can) that will include a detailed syllabus, an equipment suggestions slide PDF w/ specific brand recommendations (that fits every budget), and the private lessons agreement. 

What if I want to stop lessons?
No biggie! If you pay through Take Lessons, the class credits you have remaining will be returned to you and they will handle your refund. 

Am I too old to learn guitar?
Determination and heart are stronger factors than age when learning guitar.

Do you teach electric guitar or just acoustic?
I can teach you how to play guitar on an electric guitar and know a little about working the amp with pedals/effects. I AM NOT an electric guitarist though and can only go so far in that area. 

What happens when I go through all the beginner lessons but want to keep taking lessons? 
You will take a Beginners Test which has a written portion and a practical portion. The test covers important topics from each lesson packet and important chords you'll need to have memorized. If you get 80% or higher, you can then move on to the Intermediate lessons.

I have only had one lesson with Rachel so far but I can already tell I made the best decision in selecting her as my instructor. She is very organized and has a clear plan for progression, starting with a deep understanding of the basics - posture, hand position, reading music, and music theory - then goes deeper into topics as you progress. What I also like that Rachel provides clear practice goals and exercises. Rachel is a top notch instructor.

Got my headstrong 10 year old daughter to love learning  the guitar and look forward to her lessons. Adapted to a crazy schedule that allowed my daughter to continue her lessons online all the way in Tennessee. Rachel is amazing.

First lesson, but I have high expectations for the future.  Rachel is well prepared and easy going.  I'm excited to be doing this and I'm confident I'll achieve my goals with Rachel's guidance/instruction.

The lessons are broken down in easily manageable parts and very easy to understand the concepts. Rachel is very patient and knowledgeable!

Rachel does an amazing job preparing each lessons material and uses a variety of media to make the weeks class easily understandable and accessible. Ours are completed online and I find it easy to learn and enjoy regardless of not being conducted in person. Rachel also finds ways to make the lessons fun and enjoyable through interaction. Highly recommended!
