My name is Jonathan and I am an R&B Guitarist. I’ve been playing guitar and studying the guitar for over 15 years and I’ve been teaching with TakeLessons since 2015. The minute I started learning the guitar I couldn’t stop. After purchasing many books and DVDs I came across a Gospel Guitar DVD by the amazing and incomparable Bobby Griffin Jr. The DVD compelled me to seek him out for lessons and eventually I found him. I studied the guitar with Bobby Griffin for many years and we are still friends today. I have also studied with Kerry Marshall Jr., Xeryus Gittens, and Todd Pritchard, just to name a few!

My work and dedication to the craft of playing guitar led me to obtain a position as a guitar teacher at Neighborhood Studios of Fairfield County where I have been sharpening my skills as a teacher among some of the most talented musicians Connecticut has to offer! I’ve studied with some great musicians and guitarists, but nothing has replaced the hard work and dedication that I put into becoming the guitarist that I am.

Although I love teaching guitar lessons on the TakeLessons platform, one key thing to remember before choosing to take guitar lessons with me. Please be respectful of my classroom, unfortunately I’ve had some less than positive experiences with students on this platform that have been less than positive because the students were not respectful. 

🔴Questions or concerns you may have:
Maybe you’re a complete beginner? Maybe you already know some chords but you just need some guidance on how to make your chords sound musical? Perhaps you are having trouble memorizing the Fretboard? Need help learning how to “play by numbers” using the Number System? Are you tired of song-based learning and are ready to learn how to play the guitar instead of just playing the song? Maybe you want to participate in your local community ("Open-Mic Night," church, or talent show)? All of what I have mentioned here are just a few of the things you can expect to learn while taking lessons with me.

🔴I am an R&B Guitarist. I am not going to teach you “100 Rock and Metal Licks”. There are plenty of other teachers that will teach you all of the Rock and Metal music you want. I love Rock and Metal but what I am teacher is R&B.

🔴Be respectful of the curriculum and don’t try to control the classroom. I have a step-by-step process so don’t attempt to skip any of the steps. These lessons are to help you become a better guitarist. If you feel something is hard, difficult, or challenging, just let me know and I will do my best to help you meet expectations. If you practice and follow my curriculum, you will see results in your skills as a guitarist!

🔴Experience with Special Needs:
I have worked in the Direct Care field for almost 10 years, and this has given me invaluable experience working with individuals with special needs. I have experience with multiple levels of special needs, and I have the patience and the skills necessary to teach those who have special needs.

🔴Genres Taught: R&B, Gospel, and Blues Guitar.

🔴Class Features: Learning materials are made available to the student after the lesson.

The Connecticut Guitar Society is a non-profit presenting arts organization. It is the largest organization of its kind serving the general public and classical guitarists by providing a forum for listening, learning, performing and teaching.

We are an organization dedicated to the interests of guitarists and those who enjoy guitar music. Since 1923 the Society has presented monthly programs, featuring solo and ensemble performances of music from the Renaissance to the present.

The Judah Initiative is a Contemporary Christian band who often performs music during events sponsored by the organization of the same name. I'm the guitarist for this band!

Teaching Students: How to read basic sheet music, fretboard theory, how to read guitar tab, and chord charts. I teach all ages and really enjoy each and every lesson!

Organizing singers and musician together and conducting rehearsals. Arranging songs, sheet music, and having them ready in a concise manner for Sunday services.

Music Director

My duties are to work with the Music Director planning song repetoires to be used for Sunday morning worship service. As participate in the worship band as its guitarist. This is a great and fun experience!

The Fantastic Voices Of Joy is a Gospel-Funk Band from Waterbury,CT We play covers and original music!

Lead Guitarist

The Spiritual Souls is a Gospel-Quartet group from Waterbury,CT. They perform classic Gospel songs as well as originals!

As Director I help new students and the parents of new students through the enrollment process. I answer music related questions and match students up with the teacher that’s right for them, choosing from our amazing team! I remain apart of all students learning process being available to provide information in a timely manner and acting as a guidance counselor.

My role as a Camp Leader is very rewarding as I get the opportunity to teach music and art to children. I love teaching culture and basic music theory to the next generation of artist at this wonderful camp!

He was put in a tough spot with me because I'm not quite a beginner, so any instructor who gets a student like that has to learn where their student is in their learning journey. Jonathan was able to recognize where I was pretty quickly and I've already improved quite a bit because of him. He's kind. Patient. He's a good dude. He's not afraid to ask me to do something I feel like I can't do because he can see I can. He knows we all start somewhere and we're not gonna be guitar heros out of the gate. Just a good dude. Jonathan is very experienced and knowledgeable when it comes to Gospel Guitar. It's difficult to find someone in person and online who is familiar in this genre. He is a godsend. I have learned a lot from him. And his reasoning and explanations are very contextualized and practical. Overall, a great teacher and individual!
