About Kathy
I am a patient, enthusiastic teacher in the following areas: piano, violin, cello, drums, music history, and music theory. I have taught vocal and instrumental music in both Catholic and Public schools, and in after-school programs, for 20 years, and have been giving private lessons for 9 years. I enjoy teaching music to all age students, and especially enjoy watching my students grow in their music ability.

I received my Bachelor of Arts from Marygrove College in Detroit in Language Arts with minors in Music Education and History, and my Masters Degree from Wayne State University in Educati
on with emphasis on English as a Second Language and Sign Language for the Deaf. I have studied Music Education for K-5 at Madonna University in Livonia, Michigan.
I am also a published author of five children's books. You can find them through my publisher Xlibris. com and they are called Peggy, The Three-Some Book 2, The Writer's Corner Book 3, The Golden Nugget Book 4, The 1940 Diary Book 7. When you go onto their web-site put in my pen name of N.K.Beckley and they should come up. Emily Book 5 will be out sometime in March 2017 and books 6,8.9.10 should be out by Fall of 2017. These are books for students in grades 4th through 8th grades and are also interactive books. I hope you enjoy them.
I also tutor for Take Lessons Grades 1 to Grade 8 all subjects except higher level Math.

*** Lesson Details ***
Piano: All students start out learning both Treble and Bass Clefs, and their lines and spaces. Each student then starts to learn their major scales with both right and left hand for piano. They also learn the note values, and are able to put them together in a song. I use Michael Aaron curriculum, which takes in all of the above and their technique lessons. I use all the Michael Aaron Book One, Lessons, Theory, Technic, and Performance Books for any student that is age 6 and above and I would ask that parents would buy them from Anderson Music in Dearborn, Michigan as well as any other lesson books listed below before they come to my home for lessons.

Cello: Using String Builder and Strictly Strings, the students learn the bass clef, lines and spaces, scales, and songs. Students will learn how to hold their bow correctly.I have played cello in the Waterford New Horizons Concert Band for over six years. I have also been the only cellist they have as a member of the band.

Violin: Using String Builder and Strictly Strings, students will learn lines and spaces of the treble clef, note values, major scales, and songs. Students will learn how to hold their bow correctly.

Drums: Using Rockin’ Rhythm Raps, and using drum pads instead of drums, students will learn the correct way to hold drum sticks and the rhythms of all the notes in the treble and bass clefs. They will also learn songs to play.

I have recently returned from a week long stay at the Sonatina Piano Camp in Bennington VT and would like to notify all those piano students who may read this review as to the wonderful experience attending this camp can be. The camp takes adult piano students at all piano skill levels from beginner to well accomplished. Students stay in shared rooms (2-4 persons) which includes a piano in every room. Attendance is usually 18- 27 persons. The mansion itself is home to approx. 30 pianos. All meals are provided (and are outstanding) as well as piano classes and 4 lessons with concert pianists or university piano professors. Ample time is provided to practice a performance piece for the end of week performance night. Master classes are given on several evenings for those wishing to perform a work in progress piece for the attendees and the camp owner providing a public lesson.
I have found that the attending student group to be extremely supportive to all other students especially to those experiencing performance anxiety. Repeating attendees (from all over the country) have formed lasting friendships among themselves which have endured for years. Eight week long sessions are given throughout the year. In addition there are summer sessions for school aged youth
and also 4 short week sessions for those wishing to try a sampling of the camp. This past January was my 3rd year attending the camp and I will be returning again next year. My experiences at the camp have been truly unforgettable. More information can be obtained at Sonatina.com

Kathy has worked wonders with my piano lessons. In about a year and half of lessons Kathy has added scales and exercises along with musical selections designed to enhance specific skills, plus has worked with me on select piano works which I find interesting and challenging. My abilities and quality of playing been steadily improving. She is always positive and uplifting yet she still can point out areas of playing quality which require work. She gears lessons and advancement of difficulty to my specific rate of improvement. I couldn't ask for better and and am looking forward to continued progress over time for my improved musicianship.

Kathy is a patient and creative teacher who has provided me with continuous improvement in my piano playing through the application of music theory and basic piano exercises such as scales and arpeggios plus piano pieces which challenge and improve my ability. She has produced a marked improvement in my piano playing over the course of my lessons and I look forward to continuing that with her for the future.

About Nicholas
Detroit native, Nicholas C. K., demonstrated an innate musical talent from a young age. His command of piano, guitar, trumpet and bass progressed to studies at both Columbia University in Chicago and Wayne State University in Detroit. Since age 16 Nic has toured the country sharing the stage with acclaimed rock acts such as; Tesla, Bret Michaels, 3 Doors Down and many others. He is currently endorsed by Warwick Basses.

Nicholas been a musician in some form or another for as long as he can remember. His musical journey started when he was only six, with a delve into the realm of classical pi
ano. While there he studied under world class child prodigy Josh Cullen. The composers that he studied include Bach, Beethoven, Barton, Hayden and many others.

From here he progressed to playing jazz trumpet, studying the Jamey Aebersold method under Paul Finkbeiner, the lead trumpet player for the Paul Keller Ensemble.

Then at the age of 11, with the help of his grandfather he discovered the guitar. He learned quickly on his old SR guitar. He quickly discovered that he had a natural taste for blues phrasing, and his soloing abilities quickly blossomed. 2 years later, he had formed his first band, Spherical. It was through this band that he found the bass.

His journey into the realm of bass, began out of necessity and progressed into love of the bottom end. Since then, he has been collecting basses, playing, living and breathing bass. He now realizes the importance of a funky beat, a subtle line and most important of all A Tight Groove!!!

The benefit of studying under someone with a vast array of both talent and experience is clear.

*** Lesson Details ***
During his musical career Nicholas has played almost every style of music; from folk to experimental from jazz to rock. One thread holds true through all music, it has to groove.
During the course of a lesson he will cover a broad range of topics starting from the basics, and moving into ear training, sight-reading, theoretical knowledge and most important for bass players, groove. Just as every player has their own musical personality and voice, so to does every lesson that Nicholas gives.
In a supportive, patient environment, every lesson is custom tailored to the student.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Home: lessons in dedicated music room with piano and stereo, guitars/basses, cables/amps

*** Specialties ***

About Marie
Music can be found in every part of the world in every culture and there is nothing better than to be able to make your own music. I am a dramatic soprano and possess my master's degree in vocal performance and am still active as an opera singer around the country. I have a real passion for music and enjoy opening the doors for you to have the same enjoyment; and if we hit a road block there are always windows that can be opened! I have taken music lessons since I was five, so I am familiar with the trials and tribulations faced at all levels by music students and I have the patience and abili
ty to work with you to achieve your musical goals. I have worked as a private teacher for several years with students as young as five and as old as mid-eighties and believe all that is required for a stellar music student is the desire to learn and the right environment.

*** Recommended Age ***
Piano: 6 and up
Voice: 12 and up
Remember, everyone is different. However, I find that children who are at least 6 years old for piano and 12 years old for voice do best (meaning they get the most from lessons and enjoy the lesson process more). With that said, I do have piano students who started at 4.5. So long as there is interest there and parental expectations are in line with the age, anyone can benefit from music lessons. If you have questions specific to your child, please do not hesitate to contact me so we can discuss it.

My approach to singing is from a holistic perspective focusing on the physics of how sound is made. My approach may be very different from what you've ever done, but if you join me on the journey, you will find you have never produced sound easier. With this in mind, I recommend children take piano first to learn theory and basic musicality. Singing is much more difficult, and learning to sing with a healthy approach can be boring and sometimes frustrating for children. I may make exceptions, however, I will typically only accept children who are at least 12 years old. Feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss this.

*** Lesson Details ***
Music should be, first and foremost, fun. During lessons with me, students can expect someone who is willing to put forth every bit as much effort as you do. It is my goal to make every lesson productive even if no practicing was done during the week prior. I view it as my responsibility to help you ignite your desire to work so I work hard to be a motivating factor.

What to expect for your first lesson:
The first lesson is not an audition, but rather a get to know each other session.
---For voice students we will begin with some warm-ups so I can get a feel for your voice which will allow me to tailor your program for your specific needs and goals. We may also sing through a song you know or something standard (like Jingle Bells or Happy Birthday) so I can get a sense of what will best suit your voice. After this, I encourage you to bring a song you've worked on previously so I can get even more of an understanding of where you are at vocally.
---For piano students we will start with some basic discussion on how to sit at the piano, where middle C is, some simple finger placement and body mechanics, and then some basic songs.

I tailor my curriculum to meet my students' needs. I enjoy the Alfred methods for beginning theory and piano for both adults and children. If a student already has books that have been used previously, I will work with those and provide supplemental materials as necessary. Each student requires a different curriculum to blossom to full potential.

A typical lesson will include theory, warm-ups/scales, and working on repertoire.

I hope that you will consider voice or piano lessons for yourself or for a family member or friend. I tailor lessons to individual students and will make them fun and worthwhile.

*** Specialties ***
I am classically trained in voice so I focus on a healthy sound that will last lifelong.

I am able to help with diction and phonetics for singers in English, German, Spanish, Italian, and French as well as some Russian, Czech, and Polish.

I have an associate's degree in early childhood education and I am comfortable working with children as young as 3 in certain cases. Please know that learning to read music will progress slower than it would with an older child, however setting the foundation with music this early helps children throughout their entire education and beyond.

*** Travel Equipment ***
For lessons in your home, I need access to a piano or full size keyboard.

*** Alternative Medicine ***
I am finishing my first year of study towards my doctor of naturopathy degree and have taken several courses from second, third, and fourth years.

*** Notes ***
I have two dogs and three cats. If you are allergic, we will not be able to work in my studio. We can work in your home or online, however.
