Robyn J.

Knoxville, TN

About Robyn

I have been playing violin and viola for over 20 years. I hold a Bachelor's and Master's degree in music and teach at a local community college as well as a private 4-year university. I have taught children, teens, and adults; both beginners and continuing students. I learn where the student is skill-wise and we go from there. I also ask the student what his/her goals are, so that we have a set to-do list to work with.

*** Lesson Details ***
We will work at your pace--I will push you, but I am aware that everyone works at a different speed. I will learn that speed and work with you accordi
ngly. I expect students to practice and do their best, but I also understand that life sometimes gets in the way. After a few months, you will know the basics of the instrument and be able to play recognizable tunes for your family and friends!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music room/office with seating for parents in living room.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide a music stand in my studio, but nothing else. My students should have an instrument with all accessories (bow, case, shoulder rest) and also a music stand for home practicing.

Viola Lessons

I have played the viola from sixth to twelfth grade, but never taken a private lesson until signing up to take one at Pellissippi State Community College. From the first day of the lessons that semester until the last I looked forward to going to them. Robyn easy to get along with and an excellent teacher as well as violist and violinist. While I haven't had her as an instructor for violin using what I know from my viola lessons and having heard her play violin I would imagine those lessons are just as fun and fruitful as the viola lessons.

Professional and enthusiastic teacher

Robyn is an excellent, enthusiastic, and professional teacher who loves to teach. She is very knowledgeable about music. She plays examples of new music for her students and always comes to lessons prepared. Most of all, Robyn knows how to encourage her students to keep trying.

Robyn - perfect combination!

I'm one of those violin students who has an unbelievably hectic schedule, and so I need two things from an instructor: someone who can be genuinely sensitive to that and at the same time able and willing to take the time to determine what will encourage and motivate me to stay on task.

Robyn uniquely combines these two traits along with her obvious knowledge of and skill in playing the violin. If you're anywhere near the Knoxville area, and are looking for the perfect fit in a violin instructor, I can highly recommend to you Robyn James. You will not be disappointed!

Tim R.

Powell, TN

About Tim

With classical and jazz guitar studies, with years of collaborative composition in progressive rock and fusion, and with years of solo guitar composing, I have attained a high level of technique, gained a deep understanding of music theory and songwriting, and authored a comprehensive book, "Understand, See, Hear - Become One with the Guitar." My musical journey as a composer and recording artist has always been an expression of my individuality. With many years teaching private lessons, I offer myself as a mentor, to help anyone achieve their voice, their passion, on the guitar.

*** Lesson
Details ***
Music is a subjective experience. As a listener, what you love reflects yourself; similarly, what you play reflects yourself. As your mentor, my goal is to nurture your development as a guitar player, as well as, nurture your self-expression through the instrument. With perseverance, your goals as a musician can be attained with each lesson a step in understanding and in motor skills to this end. Always though, the objective is that the musical journey is fun and fulfilling.

*** Studio Equipment ***
separate music room seating for parents

*** Specialties ***
Approaching the guitar holistically, I show how the guitar is organized using templates from my book. Musical concepts such as chords and scales are applied within the guitar's holistic framework and are related to the student's preferred artists/songs. If it compliments the student's learning style, musical notation is used. Styles I specialize in are rock 'n' roll, jazz, and classical.

Will F.

Knoxville, TN

About Will

I teach guitar, drums and vocals to an array of students ranging from 10 to 60. Not only do I teach but I also write songs for certain students who have a desire to perform their own music as well as learning and honing their craft on their instrument. I am currently helping a vocal student of mine write some songs after scales and warm-ups and am working with one of my top guitar students tomorrow on different scale techniques. I just placed a drum student in the finals in Alternative Press Magazine's Hit Like A Girl competition. She was the top vote getter with 1,026 votes and is in the top
10 under 18 drummers in the world. I am also working with more and more students on songwriting and showing them different chords and ways to go about writing a song. I would love to get started with you as soon as possible and we will get you where you want to be musically. I find that if a student has a particular song or a rhythm pattern they want to learn they learn more quickly. They're learning and having fun at the same time. We will find what you want to learn and we will get it down! Furthermore, it's your choice if you would rather come to my place as a lot of my students do or have me come to your place as a lot of them do. I look forward to speaking with you! Cheers!

*** Lesson Details ***
I will get you started depending on your skill level. I usually, of course, see where we're at there and then decide what needs to be taught. With each respective student I usually make them a CDR the lessons for you so you can take them home and improve on what we've worked on.

With that said, i typically recommend/use Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Books 1-3 for the younger students. Great Teacher

At the tender young age of 60 i started taking lessons with Robert. He was patient enough to show me the way without me getting discouraged. He not only taught me guitar but helped me pick out instruments and a p.a. system. I really enjoyed the learning experience. Now i am able to play out in front of people and have a lot of fun playing at charity and other events with my friends.
