I would assess the student's capability and begin with the level appropriate for the student. For new students with no experience, I would start out with simple hand positioning and playing the piano firsthand. We'll learn as we go with fine details of reading notation and techniques. I will introduce one or two subject to cover for each lesson. For students that have more experience and are at the beginner level, I will introduce technical practices and assign a piece of music. As for intermediate and advance, we will cover technical practice, assigned music, and music theory.

Do not be afraid to start as a beginner on the oboe! Double reed playing is quite literally as old as the hills, and one of my specialties is historical double reed instruments. While teaching the Woodwind Methods class at Northwest Nazarene University, I gave modern oboe and bassoon as much attention as flute, clarinet, and saxophone, and the students thrived, never learning to fear the instruments, as is usually the case in university courses of this type. If you love the sound half as much as I do, you may have just found your musical voice, so let's get started!

I've been teaching guitar for over eight years. I've previously been a part of two bands during my formative years and recently have been a session guitar player for four upcoming indie rock, alternative, and R&B/Soul albums.
For children and beginners, I use the Mel Bay publication Children's Guitar Chord Book as well as Hal Leonard's Guitar Method series. I also apply basic music theory that includes learning the Circle of Fifths and basic reading of sheet music.
For intermediate guitar players, I utilize the Gibson's Learn and Master Guitar series to teach Power Chord Formation and Delivery, Fingerpicking, Pentatonic Scales, Reading Tabulature, and tackling some of classic rock and jazz's favorite tunes.
For guitar lessons at my studio, I leverage Guitar Pro to project and display tabs and play-alongs with ease. For in-home lessons, I use the software for select lessons as we begin song selection and play-alongs.
