Charlotte is one of the most musical cities in the South, and its choral ensembles are among the nation's best. The Oratorio Singers of Charlotte, Carolina Voices, and Renaissance choral ensemble are just a few of the many outstanding vocal groups and talents located in or near Charlotte.
The Oratorio Singers are the official chorus for the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and perform multiple classical concerts each year in the Knight Theater and other area venues. Carolina Voices was formed 60 years ago and performs a wide range of musical styles several times per year. The group is most noted for its annual Singing Christmas Tree show held each December and is comprised of volunteers who also perform in smaller groups that tour the region. Renaissance was founded in 2002 and is comprised of three dozen outstanding singers who excel in presenting the greatest classical works of the past 500 years. The group has performed at the Duke University Chapel and annually presents a highly regarded Christmas program at many area churches.
Great Venues and Events
When you are taking singing lessons in Charlotte, you should visit the many great music venues and events held each year in the Queen City. Charlotte has many great concert halls and outdoor auditoriums, including Rooftop 210 at the EpiCentre, the Neighborhood Theatre in North Davidson, the Double Door Inn near downtown, Ovens Auditorium on East Independence Boulevard, and Fillmore Charlotte in Center City are just some of the city's many great local music venues. The Carolina Rebellion in May, NoDa Summer MusicFest and Uptown Charlotte Jazz Fest in June, July Jam, and Charlotte Sunset Jazz Festival in September are just some of the many annual musical festivals and events that feature amazing singers and musical acts.
Auditions and Open Mic Nights
Charlotte has many great ways you can hone your singing prowess when taking singing lessons in Charlotte, Carolina Voices, Renaissance, Oratorio Singers of Charlotte, and other musical ensembles regularly hold auditions. You also can take advantage of the city's many open mic nights to gauge your progress as you take singing lessons in Charlotte and possibly even find a spot in one of the many local bands. Mondays through Thursdays in particular, you can participate in an open mic night at a local venue called The Evening Muse, located north of uptown. Puckett's Farm Equipment on West Sugar Creek Road have open mic nights on Mondays. Smokey Joe's Cafe on Briar Creek Road and Petra's Piano Bar on Commonwealth have open mics on Tuesdays. Summit Coffee's location in Davidson and The Evening Muse have open mics on Wednesdays, and Tommy's Pub on Central Avenue offers open mic nights on Thursdays. You'll have to call ahead to be sure a location is holding its open mic night and to register to perform.
