Welcome to the premier Haidong Gumdo sword class where we focus on refining your sword technique and understanding the sword fighting theory that underpins this martial art. 

You may be familiar with Japanese Kendo, this is similar in some respects but goes so much further as a battlefield oriented sword martial art fit for national defense and ancient warfare as opposed to the Kendo sports competition. 

Originating from the historical martial art culture in Korea, Haidong Gumdo is passed down from the illustrated military manual, Muye Dobo Tongji, which was gifted to Korea from the Chinese long ago. Our class will be grounded in the principles of Korean culture, which emphasizes respect for oneself and others as well as an appreciation for history.

As you progress through our Gumdo course, you will learn to harness your inner strength while developing precision and speed in your movements. You will gain insight into ancient sword fighting theory which will help you understand why certain techniques work better than others.

Master Wathen is a highly skilled expert instructor in the art of Gumdo and has taught regularly in Seoul, Korea at the World Haidong Gumdo Federation Headquarters over the past decade. He will guide you towards becoming proficient with firm, padded safety swords, wooden practice swords, and aluminum replica training swords (for black belts). Safety is a top priority so all equipment is provided initially.

Daniel taught one of my elementary art classes, and then when I was older, he taught a private martial arts class. Both classes sparked a life-long interest, and I have now been drawing seriously for about seven years and have taken martial arts classes for about two years, going for my brown belt in taekwondo soon. I regard him as one of the best teachers I've ever had.
Daniel is funny, explains things very well and in unforgettable ways, and cares about his students. I would recommend him and his teaching skills to anyone looking to take a class.

Haidong Gumdo is a Korean sword martial art. In 2023, I was invited to provide a seminar in Charlotte, NC to Tangsoodo (Karate) students who wished to know more about sword martial arts.
