Have you ever wondered what it would take to learn how to sightread? Join Rachel, a piano and voice teacher with twenty years of experience, to make sightreading simple by studying the basic skills of sightreading: note identification, intervals, and chord recognition.

In this video, Rachel will review the basics of chords and how they relate to Western music. Look for additional bite-sized videos where she will have mnemonic devices to remember the names of the lines and spaces in the bass and treble clefs. Furthermore, she will be sharing some videos where you can practice naming different notes, intervals, and chords. Then, she will walk you through different strategies for identifying those features.

Music Theory

I bring a great deal of patience and understanding to lessons. My philosophy is that if the student is not in control of the pace of learning that they will quickly lose interest and even resent the instrument or subject. I also strongly believe that students must be enjoying their lessons or they will struggle to learn. I will try to help students pace their lessons to their satisfaction and choose material which will help them enjoy learning how to play their instrument. As a teacher, I try to encourage having joy in the journey of learning the instrument and learning the material.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am fairly laid back in my teaching style. I use the Alfred Piano Basics series, though I've also got some experience with the Piano Town series. For beginning voice students, I use Jay Althouse's "Folk Songs for Solo Singers" series.

After 3-6 months after beginning lessons with me, students should see that they have a handful of songs in their repertoire. They will also have more confidence in their skills and in their abilities to set goals and measure their progress. In addition, students will be able to see a significant improvement in their technique.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would require the student to have a piano for piano lessons. I would provide a CD player if necessary for voice students. If a student would like to record a lesson, I can bring my computer, record the lesson, and provide them with a digital copy if they would like.

*** Specialties ***
I am a classical pianist and singer. I have some minor experience with the more classical Broadway musical styles (such as those utilized in "The Sound of Music" or "Carousel"), but I have no experience with the distinct Broadway styles used in more modern musicals.

Before starting lessons, we will discuss the goals for these lessons, such as being able to identify patterns in musical performance and interpretation or composition. Then, we will discuss what the student knows of music theory. Then, we will begin lessons on music theory topics.

Each lesson, we will have a time where we can review fundamental music theory principles, such as notes, chords, voice leading, and so forth from the last lesson. Then, we will build on those skills by analyzing music already written and composing our own music in order to see these items in action.

Sightreading Made Simple - Middle C Position Note ID exercises - 1

Have you ever been confused about what you're supposed to do with sharps and flats? Here's a quick tutorial with veteran teacher, Rachel A. In this video, she will explain that sharps move a note up a half step, and flats move notes down a half step. She will show you on a replica of a piano keyboard how that moves up and down, including how that works with keys like E and F!

Do you struggle to read the treble clef? In this short video, Rachel will walk you through some mnemonic devices to remember the lines and spaces of the Treble clef. For the lines, she likes "Every Good Boy Does Fine" or "Every Good Burrito Doesn't Fly." For the spaces, she keeps it simple with F-A-C-E. At the end of the video, you will get a chance to use your new note identification skills to figure out what note she's got on the screen, but don't forget to think through what strategy you used to get there!
