Japanese calligraphy is a form of calligraphy, or artistic writing, of the Japanese language.

In modern calligraphy, a number of tools are used to make a composition. Most basic four tools were collectively called Four Treasures of the Study.
You need to purchase at the Japanese store or internet store.

1. A brush
2. An ink stick (sumi).
3. Mulberry paper (washi)
4. An inkstone (suzuri) to grind the inkstick against, mixed with water.

5. A paperweight (bunchin) to hold the paper in place
6. A cloth (shi ta ji ki) to place under the paper (often newsprint is used as well) to prevent ink from bleeding through.

I'm totally new to Japanese and I was very nervous. I just completed my 4th lesson and I'm finding learning Japanese is fun! Toshi is very patient and he is helping me create a plan forward. I have been working hard and have kind of gotten Hiragana,Katakana, but I need a lot more practice. I am able to read and write some words and in our lesson today I spoke my first complete Japanese sentence. Thank you Toshi for your help and for making my Japanese journey fun!

Although my focus as a TakeLessons teacher is primarily in music, I also teach a killer Calligraphy class. I do not take the fact that I am 'multi-talented' lightly. I know good calligraphy and I know mediocre calligraphy. Before getting more involved with music, I taught Calligraphy at a junior college for 7 years. I taught over 750 students and took classes from a student of Donald Jackson, one of the Scribes of the Queen of England. I can strengthen the work and techniques of intermediate or advanced calligraphers (and illuminators) and am very adept at teaching beginners. We can meet in my music studio or your home. I have a list of preferred materials and love this amazing communication form.

Marty helped me to prepare to sing at my wedding and although that didn't ultimately happen because I was so busy with all the wedding details I did not have time to practice, the experience was magficent and I've taken what I learn with her an facilated into many avenues of my life including speaking, as she taught me how to better project and be more confident in doing so.
She takes a very personal approach with her students to help them truly recognize there goals.

Marty is a wonderful teacher and very easy to understand. I tried many online packages and other teachers and I could not keep up with their instruction. Marty is clear and has figured out ways to make It possible for me to play much faster than I ever thought I could. I will be returning from a trip east and will continue my lessons when I return. I am very happy that I found Marty.

"I can't recommend lessons with Tori highly enough!

I've been obsessed with oil painting, and every kind of 2D visual art, for as long as I can remember, but I never really believed in myself to do it until I worked with Tori.

My drawing, painting, and even my 3D work progressed more, and more quickly, working with Tori than they had in years

Thank you Tori!!!!"
