Christina B.

Lancaster, PA

About Christina

I began piano at age 6 under Suzuki-certified instructor Cindy Wittenburg. I loved everything about it - even practicing scales! After nine years, I took a break from piano and took up drums. While I loved drumming, upon my entry to Millersville University, I decided my number one love was still the ivories. I began learning under Dr. Anita Renfroe, graduating with a B.A. in Music Business & Technology. Although no longer in classes, I still teach myself piano works as well as write new pieces.

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching philosophy is: Enjoy your time while learning something valua
ble! My teaching style is informal and relaxed, but I expect discipline and practicing on the end of the student. I love the excitement my students get from seeing progress, and if you're willing to work a little, progress is a guaranteed reward!

If you're someone who has never touched a keyboard in their life, after 4-6 months you can expect to be able to understand note values, read simple rhythms, sightread simple works, play pieces with two hands, among many other valuable skill sets. Late beginner to intermediate students can expect to be playing early advanced pieces within this time frame, as well as understanding more advanced concepts and techniques.

I utilize the Kodaly solfege method as I was taught at Millersville University, because I have found it invaluable in learning pieces. As a beginner, you will learn note values, rhythms, sight-reading, how to sing while playing, musical vocabulary, basic music history, theory relative to the piece you are learning, scales, arpeggios, proper performance technique, and much more! I frequently request a simple composition from the student to increase creativity and understanding of the instrument, and try to hold a recital bi-yearly for the students to show off their improvements!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I either provide the books and the parents reimburse me, or I tell the parents what to purchase. expect the student to provide either a piano or keyboard, a proper bench and music stand.

*** Specialties ***
Classical, Romantic, Contemporary, Rock, Pop

James T.

Lancaster, PA

About James

I graduated with a B.A. in Professional Music from Boston's Berklee College of Music. When I first heard about Berklee, I too thought of warm and sunny Berkeley California and not the frigid winters in Boston. Berklee however, is respected world-wide as the musicians music college. Each year, only 3% of students are able to graduate. Advanced freshman placement accelerated all Berklee core requirements by my sophomore year. An early focus on their Advanced Harmony/Theory and Ear Training electives provided the rare opportunity of experiencing Berklee's highest level courses in both departments
. I graduated with Honors in 7 semesters with a cumulative music GPA of 3.6. (Magna Cum Laude). Since graduation, I've been a full-time independent professional musician with over 28 years of experience in all facets of music. Teaching private piano, guitar, and bass students however, is my first love and I consider my biggest accomplishment to be the accomplishments of my students. Since Berklee, I've amassed an extensive teaching library from over 5,000 original lesson plans tailored to meet the needs of students of all ages, levels, and musical interests. Acquiring and maintaining private students for over 28 years has been based solely through word-of-mouth referrals from students, parents, and teachers. A high percentage of students perform in bands, record professionally, and teach independently or in schools. Many letters of recommendation have provided college entry and 6 of 8 recommendations to attend Berkee have since graduated. Teaching beginning music students at any age is most important to me however. So many students never get the opportunity to ever realize their potential as was the case with me. From age 12 to 23, I was frustrated as I was only ever taught how to read music. Reading is important, but there's more to what we hear that meets the eye (pun intended I guess). I believe this is one of the reasons most people say, "If only I had stuck with lessons". Every student entering Berklee is told to forget everything they've ever learned up until now. Professional Performance: I've demonstrated over 28 years of professional diversity with a variety of genres (i.e. jazz, rock, blues, classical, etc.) facilitated through an equal proficiency with piano, guitar, and bass. Versatility has helped to provide over 9,000 solo, band, and free-lance performances at over 2,000 different venues. I've performed bass and keyboard duties simultaneously via split keyboard in original trio for over 15 years with world-respected drummer Clyde Lucas (Count Basie, Ray Charles, etc.). While attending college, I performed in Boston jazz clubs with prominent Berklee students including Smitty Smith from Jay Leno's Tonight Show Band. Other notable bands include Robert Gordan, Eddie Holman (Hey There Lonely Girl), Cab Calloway, and The Moody Blues. Long list includes prominent politicians and various jazz festivals. Recording/Composition: I've recorded 200+ original compositions and 50+ student play-a-long C.D.'s from my elaborate home studio. Advanced recording techniques implementing analog, MIDI, digital and synchronization formats has provided vast experience in both the professional and home studio. Multiple clients have hired me to transcribe, arrange, and record all instrumental parts for a variety of diverse artists and professional recording studio projects including jingles, commercials, and film.

Jim Rocks! I love hanging out every Sunday jamming

I have dabbled with the guitar for a couple of years but never got serious about. This year I made a new years resolution to get serious about it and find a guitar instructor.

I am so happy that I found Jim. He is brilliant with music and is that laid back, rad teacher that you hope to have for guitar.

We are about 5 weeks into lessons and I'm already playing Dead or Alive, Blackbird, Polly, and learning new songs every week. I thought we would be doing "boring" exercises still but he is great at teaching you the basics while keeping it fun.

A+ for Jim. Also, he is extremely flexible.

The only downside is that I wanted him to teach me how to sing Blackbird, but that's not his cup of tea. haha

Thank you!

Hey Jim- I had a GREAT 1st lesson. You went slow enough so that I could understand what was going on but also went a little quicker so we could make the most of the half hour session. The things we worked on were exactly what i was hoping for. I will definitely be back on I feel confident in my "homework" - those darn finger exercises and I have a love hate relationship right now!! Thank you!

Dr. Jonathan G.

Lancaster, PA

About Dr. Jonathan

Jonathan began his musical studies at age 7, after falling in love with his first classical music cassette tape given to him the prior year. Jonathan trained as a pianist throughout his childhood, and studied with the venerated Harvey Wedeen at Temple University in Philadelphia through middle and high school. He made his orchestral debut as soloist with the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra at age 15, after winning their instrumental competition. Continuing his piano studies into college, where piano was his primary instrument, he completed a bachelors in music at the Eastman School of Music. Durin
g these college years, he played regular outreach concerts as part of a chamber group for a myriad of organizations. He has given solo recitals, accompanied other musicians, and played in chamber groups. He now holds a doctorate in music from the University of Maryland at College Park.

During high school, Jonathan became fascinated by writing his own music, and now holds three degrees from preeminent schools in the field of music composition. His music has been performed by numerous ensembles and musicians, including the Kronos Quartet, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Eastman Musica Nova, and Knox-Galesburg Symphony. He was recently a featured guest composer at the Bowling Green State University New Music and Art Festival. His piece for stings, Nightscape, has been a particular audience favorite and performed by orchestras across the US. Jonathan also enjoys doing collaborative and multimedia projects with local choreographers, videographers, and musicians.

As a teacher, Jonathan is exceptionally patient, always engaged with his students’ progress, and actively listens to what his students want from their lessons and in helping them decide on the music they want to play. He takes a very practical and holistic approach to teaching keyboard, and always makes sure to discover the fun in learning. Jonathan strongly believes that all students, no matter where one is in life, possess the ability to achieve success in their lessons – and that his job is to guide them to unlock and discover their potential, to inspire their curiosity, and to help them advance their musical skills on their chosen instrument. Jonathan has also taught courses in theory, aural skills, sight-singing, and composition at the University of Maryland and Ball State University. He has studied music pedagogy, and actively pursues researching about new methods and developments on the learning process.

Angela W.

Lancaster, PA

About Angela

Hello, my name is Angela W. I am a fun-loving and encouraging voice teacher who has years of experience working with children. I began my musical education at the age of 10 years old performing in choirs and taking voice lessons. Since that time I have been performing professionally in various theatres up and down the east coast and have had the opportunity to perform as a featured soprano in venues all over the world, including the York Minster Cathedral and with the Varna Choir of Bulgaria. I received my Vocal Performance degree from Charleston Southern University, and then moved to Lancast
er to perform professionally at American Music Theatre, 8 years ago and fell in love the area. I have been teaching privately for the last 5 years with a lot of success and am looking to continue to build my studio by taking on more private students in Lancaster County and surrounding areas.

I am a Charleston Southern University graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Vocal Performance, Summa Cum Laude. I have held various titles as a part of the Miss SC Organization and placed 1st runner-up as well as won overall talent in the 2006 competition. From there I went on to hold the title of Miss South Carolina Sweetheart 2006, where I won the Pat Musk Overall Talent Award in the Miss National Sweetheart Competition. I have many years of pageant and professional performing experience, have performed and auditioned in NYC, so I feel comfortable helping students in any various avenues from pageant and audition preparation to perfecting performance technique. I am a avid song writer and have produced and recorded two cover CDs that I have successfully sold at a number of professional theatres and online. I am also a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and have two Regional NATS Awards.

I offer beginner to advanced voice lessons for students interested in classical, operatic, Broadway and popular music. I try to provide my students the opportunity to practice a wide range of skills when learning music. My goal as a teacher is to specifically designed each individual lesson to help the student achieve their particular goals as an artist, performer, and musician.

Voice students will learn exercises to practice good breath control, posture, and diction, all of which form the foundations of good singing.  Students will be expected to practice these exercises outside of lessons, prior to practicing vocal literature, as to develop good singing habits.  About fifty percent of lesson time will be dedicated to technique, and the other fifty percent will be dedicated to learning vocal pieces. These practices will enhance muscle coordination and breath control when singing, helping to enhance and improve pitch, timbre, expression and vocal range.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My home studio is equipped with keyboard and guitar, as well as a sizable repertoire of classical, broadway and popular music. I am more than happy to help students find any music they may need for lessons that is not already in my library and also can recommend my favorite websites where music may be easily found. I also own a portable keyboard that I use for out-of-studio voice students.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I have a portable keyboard for voice students, but I strongly recommend that voice students record their lessons for reference during practice.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in musical theatre, jazz, and classical music (arias and art songs), but I am comfortable with a wide array of singing literature, as I believe that the technical foundations of good singing remain constant, regardless of the genre. I also have performed in various genres thru my professional career including, pop, contemporary, jazz, musical theatre, classical and country.

Angela gave my daughter singing lessons, and we were very impressed. She had all of her lessons very organized and understandable, and even had extra assignments for my daughter to work on in-between lessons. Aside from that, she is just a very personable teacher, and really engaged us. I would definitely recommend her as a teacher!
