Classical guitar students start with five subjects.

1) Technique is concerned with the development of the physical mechanics involved in playing the instrument.

2) Scales are a part of basic music vocabulary and building blocks of the musical language.

3) Chords are also basic vocabulary of the musical language.

4) Note reading is not required for every student. It really depends on the students' goals. However, I strongly encourage everyone learn to read musical notation, (more than tablature). Literacy in reading music is analogous to literacy in reading in our English language. Can you imagine how much smaller our world would be if we couldn't read?

5) Classical repertoire (songs) utilize the skills and concepts of all the previously mentioned subjects and are the goal of studying music. And by the way, they are really fun to play.

A beginning student will practice all these subjects as part of the daily practice routine. A half hour practice session will ...

Phil is a consummate musician and is extremely knowledgeable and patient. He helped me to arrange several songs and encouraged me to write my own arrangements, as that really helps one better understand the instrument. I loved our lessons on learning all the scales and modes, too.

Phillips teaching is very low key and suttle but very effective. I am astounded at how much he has taught me in a few weeks.

Influenced by country music artists like Carrie Underwood and Faith Hill, along with pop icons Kelly Clarkson and Adele, Carolyn has used her big, powerful voice to create her own style that captures the true essence of country-pop. She released her debut EP in 2018 independently, which peaked during pre-order at #7 on iTunes Country charts. Since then, she has opened for artists such as Chase Rice, Ashley McBryde, Walker Hayes, and kicked off NY’s Country 94.7 Stars and Strings event at the Barclays Center starring Sam Hunt, Dustin Lynch, Chris Janson, Runaway June, and more.

Carolyn released her highly anticipated single in 2019, and the track was named one of the Top 15 Songs at CMA Fest 2019 with features in Hollywood Life, Celebuzz, among others. Her last single was released to critical acclaim, with features in Taste of Country, The Boot, Sounds Like Nashville, and the music video was added into rotation on The Country Network. Carolyn has and is exactly what I was looking for in a voice coach. Like me, her interests in the performing arts are broad. I felt both excited and comfortable with her. She is professional and easy to talk to. I can sense strongly that Carolyn is full of love and compassion. I am so excited for the next lesson! Here's to the new horizon and everything in between! :) Thank you Carolyn for reassuring me that my decision to switch careers was a wise decision indeed. Dance forward.

I've had several guitar teachers over the years and have to say that Michael is the most patience, careful, and attentive instructors I've had the pleasure of learning from. He has the ability to break down the overwhelming mysteries of playing the guitar into achievable goals and I feel like I've progressed steadily ever since starting with him. He's helpful at understanding where I want to grow as a musician and helps fill in my musical blind spots, so I feel like I have the habits of a real professional, even if I'm just learning for fun. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking to to have fun, or even bring their professional musicianship to the next level!

I was recommended to Mike by my friend Tony. Mike is structured, focused, and encouraging. I was having a tough time with learning some basics and Mike helped me improve everything from proper posture, to volume control and generally helped me improve on just about everything. Looking forward to more lessons and definitely recommend Mike to anyone looking for a great teacher.
Austin
Mike is not only a world class musician and highly effective teacher, he is also an outstanding mentor and has become a close friend. I was having a great deal of difficulty moving past the beginner stage; Mike helped me blast through to a place where I am now comfortable playing in small settings in front of friends and family. I’d recommend Mike to both adults like me looking to tune up their skills, and to parents looking for a teacher for their kids. Especially if they want someone who can get Timmy shredding those frets, but is also a good role model. Mike is a former marine and generally good dude. He’ll be teaching my kids someday.

Christina is patient, encouraging, and a great tutor . I have improved a lot since starting my classes with her as far as understanding the German language (esp. with the hearing and speaking parts). She gave me helpful tools to speed up my learning and she helped me find the right study techniques for better comprehension of the language.

I loved working with Christina! I already had an ear for German growing up with a native speaker and she helped me understand a lot of the grammar I was missing in such a short period of time! As I practice on my own it becomes easier to follow patterns that she pointed out to me.

Instruction also includes how to play correctly so as not to develop negative playing habits. In the case that you have developed negative playing habits, how to correct them.

Emphasis is also placed on proper warm up techniques, stretching exercises, holding the sticks correctly, posture, plus drum kit "throne" seat placement, and correct stance, if playing concert snare or percussion. Independence is also developed through simple easy to grasp exercises. In addition, drum exercises are individually tailored to the particular needs of each student.

Chuck has also developed a special ear training method utilizing CD and MP3 technology. This method reduces the amount of time it normally takes to develop good listening skills. These listening skills decrease the time that it takes to learn new songs, and learn how to interact with other musicians.

How to Play You Are My Sunshine on the Ukulele

As far as songs to learn on the ukulele goes, You Are My Sunshine is near the very top of my list to recommend to students. It checks all of the boxes of a good first song to learn:  Number 1: It has a very simple and easy to hum melody  Number 2: It only has three chords (C Major, F Major, and G Major) in it and is usually played in the key of C (our favorite on Ukulele!) Number 3: It is very recognizable and is somewhat already in our ear, so we don’t have to go in blind and learn it …
