About James
I worked for Eddie Van Halen for five years in the 1990's in the Beverly Hills area of Los Angeles and was instrumental in providing help with development of the Peavey Wolfgang and Wolfgang Special Guitar by providing feedback on the prototypes Eddie was designing at the time. I learned a lot from Eddie and his brother Alex about music and the music industry. (All you have to do is pay attention! ) I have played in bands from Hollywood to Toronto and back both as a singer songwriter and guitarist. I bring the Musicians Institute way to the table and get things up and running quickly. I help students get it under their fingers fast and get it right the first time.

I believe in sharing the happiness of making music with anyone who loves music and the guitar in particular. I do my very best to get you playing the songs you love in Pop,
Rock, Jazz and Folk Music of your choice. Today's modern new guitars are easy to play and you will enjoy learning Guitar right away. That is how it should be.
When you study there is a basic understanding of Guitar to be learned that allows an ease of use for anyone for years to come. This will help you reach your goal and improve each week. My students learn to practice in a way that feels comfortable and makes sense. This takes all the stress out of learning and gives everyone something to smile about and look forward to each week.

The good feeling of playing along with friends and taking a solo is within every students grasp. I will show you the way there. And with a solid and straightforward approach to the theory as it applies directly to the guitar you will feel confident and unafraid of any music endeavor. We'll cover harmony and fingerboard theory and give you a road map of the guitar neck that makes it a pleasure to play. You learn the basics and much more than you thought possible retaining 90 percent of what you learn!

Having been a student myself I was deeply involved in music since age 12 and played in bands and duos for over 15 years . I can help you to be a well rounded player and performer with a smile, a laugh and a joy for music whether your in a band or a budding solo artist.

*** Lesson Details ***
Most students want to play the Guitar to play their favorite songs and I'm the same way. Music is something we carry with us in our hearts and minds. Students will learn what they wish to learn and work at a pace that is comfortable to them. Whether you are a student, “weekend warrior” or a parent whose child has expressed an interest in Guitar anyone can learn all there is to know about Harmony and Theory for the Guitar and how to play their favorite songs.

We cover theory in an easy and straightforward no nonsense way in the first half of each lesson and then apply it to the song you wish to learn. This creates an atmosphere where you understand and feel at home with the Guitar. You get an understanding right away and because it is immediately fun it allows you to feel comfortable at any level. Music is fun, and songs are the creative expression of what we feel. Combining theory and the freedom to play and sing songs allows us to express ourselves through music.
After 6 months students will have a solid foundation in theory, and a road map of the guitar fretboard enabling them to advance to an intermediate level if they are ready to do so. Students will know enough that music as it relates to the Guitar, which is the world’s most popular instrument in contemporary music, is not a mystery but is a welcome friend. And they will be able to play songs by popular artists and advance at a pace that is satisfying and enjoyable.

What James spouse says about working on songwriting with him:

"James is my husband for over 10 years now. Over the years, I have seen James give guidance and counsel to many hopeful musicians of all ages, and inspire others about how music influences and benefits our lives. I would highly recommend James to anyone who wants to learn guitar, voice, music theory, and acting. James is a great talent, and study with him would benefit anyone with the sincere desire to grow as an artist. When we married, I had fallen in love with James’ conversational style, and his vast knowledge of music. When I heard him play guitar, I knew that I wanted to write songs with him, and we released our first album, in 2012 on iTunes."

I can't wait to work with you! I am passionate about the subjects I teach, and find nothing can compare to seeing a student "get it", so they may too enjoy the passion that comes from learning and doing something they love.

Everything I teach I've learned most completely by doing as a Professional, and find great reward in sharing my experience and knowledge with my students.

When the "aha" light goes on, it's truly a wonderful moment for me, and encourages me to drive my students to build towards more of those moments as students, and then ultimately, for themselves as they learn to grow for themselves.

About Melissa
I have been teaching since 2006 on a variety of topics. I graduated with an BA from the University of Wisconsin. My degree is in History with and emphasis on East Asian history.

I've taught all age groups from age 2 up to retirees. My teaching experience includes one-on-one and group classes in a variety of settings. I've taught corporate classes, private lessons, small groups, and traditional classroom lessons.

We have a student-centric philosophy of learning. Lessons are generally relaxed and designed to work towards accomplishing student determined goals. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. Special focus on topics like music theory, self-accompaniment, composition, song writing, and home recording are available as well.

What are your personal goals? We'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.

Lessons with small children are more focused on just having fun while developing a good musical foundation, but we prefer for them to have as much personal ownership of their lesson as possible.

Hello, and thank you for visiting my page! I have been an artist for my whole life and I am passionate about sharing my love of creativity with others. I earned an MFA in Costume Design from UCLA in 2007 and have been a freelance costume designer, college professor, photographer, illustrator, and jewelry designer.

I can teach sewing by hand and on a machine, including how to read and understand the instructions in commercial patterns. Bring your project and I'll help you make it happen! I am highly skilled at teaching life drawing, as well as marker rendering and watercolor fashion illustr

I’m an award winning photographer with great teaching skills who can teach you how to “Escape the Green Box” (get off of the Auto setting) and really use your camera and/or Adobe Lightroom to make and manage beautiful images. These are the highest quality and in depth, lessons taught one-on-one and should not be confused with quickie 2 hour overviews. I don't just tell you to "push that button" or "turn that dial", I teach you how the various camera settings impact your images. I give you the knowledge to fully understand, control and utilize your camera to make beautiful images matching your artistic vision.

I have a very easy going and relaxed teaching style, more like two friends chatting and having fun. But it's all about you and your needs. The first thing that sets me apart is that I listen t
o you. We then tailor your experience around what you already know, what you want to learn, what your photographic goals are and I cater to your learning style. This has been a winning formula with me for over 400 students spanning 6.5 years of private tutoring in photography, camera use and image editing.

These are private lessons - not a room full of people. My schedule is flexible but I do try to limit it to the hours of 10:00 am to 5:30 pm on all days of the week, however weekend time slots tend to fill up quicker. I've found that lessons of 2 hours each seem to work the best as it allows us to get into some depth each time but not so much at a time that it's overwhelming. If requested, I will do shorter or longer sessions. I have a 2 hr. minimum for the first session so book two back-to-back sessions for the first session. Lessons longer or shorter than 2 hours on weekends can only be confirmed a day or two ahead of time.

If you sign up for lessons, you can bring 1 or 2 guests (family, friends, co-workers, etc.) who can fully participate in the lesson at no charge, In other words, up to 3 for the price of 1. Just let me know in advance.

Although I consider myself an organized person, after 3 months using Lightroom I had complete chaos on my computer. It seemed I had 4 catalogs, Images I knew I had were no where to be found and I seemed to have other images in 3 or more places. It as a mess and I know there must be a better way.

I found Dan on the internet (Yelp and Craigslist), scheduled a 2 hour session with and brought over my laptop. Dan was wonderful. He listened intently to my problems. He asked me about my workflow and things that I never thought of like how many cameras will be taking photos which will all be put in Lightroom. He then mapped out where my images were on my laptop as well as my catalogs (turned out I didn't have 4 I actually had 6 - there were 2 I didn't know about.

He then proposed an image storage file structure and naming pattern, showed me how to merge information to get down to one catalog, get rid of duplicates and add missing images. He walked me through each process several times till I felt comfortable doing the rest on my own at home.

It was so great that i came back 2 more times to get info on keywording, collections and on the 3rd session we went through the magic of the Develop module where we took some ho hum images I took at Yosemite and he showed me with a few slider moves who to make them worthy of hanging in the living room.

Later, when I got stuck he helped me out through email at no charge.

Dan's style is laid back but articulate. He talks in lay terms and works at your pace. I really can't tell you how happy I was with his style and the depth of knowledge he has in the product.

Adler is patient with me while also trying to push me forwards in the same moment, great to talk to about the lessons or even just normal things, sometimes it starts to seem more like I'm just getting some pointers from a friend instead of learning from a teacher. He knows what he is doing and knows that I can only do so much at times, he guides me through the lesson instead of just teaching it like most teachers I know of. Starting off he was able answer my repetitive questions about something that he might do without thinking, and will describe what he wants of me while teaching, not always serious or just going off on his own, expecting others to know exactly what he is doing. A great teacher and more like a friend than teacher at times.

He doesnt sugar coat his critiques on your work but isnt harsh about it either. He gives many good pointers and advice, knowing how guide students to better foundations and improvement.

I have been playing drums since I was 9 and have been teaching for 4 years. I currently play in a professional band in the bay area. I specialize in many genres and odd signatures. I make sure that every one of my students understand and play with proper technique and dynamics to perform like the professionals. I teach how to read music, play various types of rhythms, play to a metronome, and play along to any of your favorite songs. I will often times play another instrument with my students to give them an understanding of what it is like to play in a band setting. I also offer group lessons where multiple students learn to play different instruments together to make music.
