Ideas to Inspire Your Young Musician in Nashville

Heather E.

Written by: TakeLessons Teacher, Heather E.

I moved to Nashville about a year ago, and while I knew it was “Music City,” I thought the nickname was a bit out of date. I mean, Nashville is just lame Honky Tonk music, right? WRONG! Nashville is pulsing with musical life! Most of the bars and clubs have fresh local bands, which is so refreshing! But…we’re talking about kid-friendly stuff, which is fun too.

My son Jonah is eleven months old, so my husband and I have been searching for some music activities we can all do together. The best thing is, a lot of the best ones we've found are totally free! As a mom and wife of a grad student/musician, free is good. Free is really good.

If you moved to Nashville recently, or if you are visiting with your family for the weekend, here are some ideas for inspiring the budding musician inside your child:

Music in the Park I found about this way too late last summer! Nashville hosts Music in the Park at Centennial Park almost every Saturday from May to August. Centennial is a huge park on the West End, across from Vanderbilt. There’s a great walking trail, a pond, a playground, and a huge yard in front of the Parthenon where they hold the concerts. Just bring your blanket and snacks and enjoy some FREE live music!

Franklin, TN It’s adorable. It’s the cutest thing you've ever seen. And, it’s full of street performers! Franklin is a suburb of Nashville, about a twenty minute drive from the city. I think some country music star was walking down the street and discovered a musician there (or so the story goes), so now it’s full of street performers. I've heard some pretty amazing stuff walking down the streets in Franklin. And don’t forget, if their performance is good enough to make you stop and listen, you owe them a dollar. So… not totally free. But close.

Student Performances Belmont University and Vanderbilt University both have some great student performances, which are almost always FREE! The theater program at Vandy puts on some amazing performances, and all of the music I've ever heard at Belmont has blown me away. (They had Dianne Graves at their Christmas performance this year!)

Also, tip from a local: If you want to meet a famous country star, skip the Grand Ole Opry and head to the Whole Foods in Green Hills. (I’m serious.)

Heather E. teaches voice lessons in Nashville, TN, as well as online. She has a BA in Music from Winthrop University and specializes in classical voice and audition prep.
