I cannot stress the importance of seeing live performances! They can inspire in a way that you cannot get from the radio, TV, or the Internet. Piano students can learn valuable tips from observing and listening to these seasoned performers. Pay attention to watching their technical skills,how they interpret the music, and their professional behavior.

Lately, I have started to record some of my students playing piano because it gives them instant feedback on how they look and sound, and gives us a strong starting point. One example is an eight year old student who was preparing to play solo at a recital. Previously, he had only played duets with me on stage so he was experiencing some stage fright about playing alone. I recorded him at home playing his piece, and coached him about his presentation of bowing, adjusting the piano bench if necessary, and taking a moment to collect himself before he started to play. I encouraged him to think about what the music meant to him and to keep playing if he made a mistake. He performed beautifully. Even though he made one mistake, it was hardly noticeable because he kept playing and didn’t get flustered.
