Videos We Love: Tiny Desk Concerts

March 19, 2014

If you are looking for intimate and artful videos of artists from Adele to Yo-Yo Ma, NPR Music’s video series Tiny Desk Concerts has your name written all over it. The premise of the videos is very simple: At least once a week, a musician will visit the NPR Music office and play a few songs in a very small space. Some bands have to condense and play more stripped down versions of their songs in order to fit into the space. It’s a great series to follow to get a close look at up and coming artists as well as some more popular acts. Here are a few of my favorite recent Tiny Desk Concerts…

The xx

I love how the simplicity of their music translates to this small space. The xx don’t need to change a thing and they still deliver a powerful and emotional performance.

The Zombies

The Zombies had big hits in the 60’s with “She’s Not There” and “Time of the Season”. Their baroque pop sound has continued to be hugely influential. In this video, core members of the band perform stripped down versions of songs both old and new.

Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, Chris Thile And Stuart Duncan

I never know what to expect from Yo-Yo Ma besides fine musicianship, and this video is certainly no exception. Here he plays bluegrass inspired instrumentals as a member of a very talented quartet.

Guards

Guards first album, In Guards We Trust, could easily be the bright and cheerful indie rock soundtrack to your summer. I love their spirited sound and it’s so fun to see them up close!

Adele

Come on, it’s Adele! This close glimpse of her powerful singing feels rare, intimate and special.
