We’ve all heard about the “starving musician” stereotype, right? Fortunately, it’s not true for everyone. But if the gigs aren’t rolling in, another way to make a few extra bucks is busking, or the art of street performing. You’ve seen them in parks, subway tunnels and on street corners – and it can actually be a great way to make a little money on the side if you do it right.
Besides the money-making aspect, you’ll also be getting your (or your band’s) name out there, and gaining experience playing in front of a crowd. If you have any CDs of your music, be sure to put a few copies out for sale. Think of something that sets you apart, whether it’s your appearance, your set-up, or your song choice. And don’t forget to check the laws in your city, as some areas require buskers to have permits.
Busking can be just about any entertaining performance, from fire-eating to sword-swallowing, so you’ll have a lot to compete with, but don’t let that discourage you! Here are 5 great busking tips from DIYMusician.com that we wanted to pass along:
5 tips to busking success:
1) Have a good attitude- remember that you’re not the main attraction. Most folks don’t even expect to see or hear you, so be gracious and grateful if anyone listens, applauds, tips you, or buys a CD.
2) Be polite to fellow buskers- you’re all in this together. Share the public space. Don’t hog the best spots.
3) Respect local businesses- keep your volume down, and play material that is appropriate for public spaces. Help them make money, and they’ll help you make money. Get adversarial on them, and they’ll be sure to end your busking career early.
4) Be upbeat and joyful- brooding melancholy may be perfect for a smokey club, but buskers gather the best crowds when they play material that makes the kids want to dance and the old folks smile!
5) Pace yourself- Don’t strain your hands or voice before you’ve built up your endurance. Start slow. Work your way up to the long-haul days.
