Learn oboe from a friendly expert!

When you study oboe with me, you receive informative and fun lessons where we can discuss a wide range of topics from band music, fundamentals, audition techniques, breathing exercises, college applications, stage fright, movie music, and so much more! Each student of mine has a different path and different interests so I adapt my lessons to fit their needs. What we study together: My preferred book for beginners is the Rubank book (Elementary for less than 3 years of playing or Intermediate for 3 to 5 years of playing). For students playing more than 5 years or high schoolers, I suggest the Barret Oboe Method book. I also have experience with a wide range of other books such as Essential Elements and Standard of Excellence. Music from Pop Culture: I also love playing music from movies and TV shows! Many of my beginner students love playing Jurassic Park, Game of Thrones, or Pirates of the Caribbean. Not every lesson has to be strict! :)

About Briana V.

Hello! I am a UCLA alum ('18) where I received my Bachelor's in Music - Oboe Performance. After playing clarinet for 7 years, I switched to oboe when I was a freshman in high school. I studied with Andrea Overturf, the 3rd Oboe/English horn player in the San Diego Symphony. While in college, I studied with Jonathan Davis, a prominent musician in the LA scene and frequent oboe substitute with the San Diego Symphony.

Madalyn liked the instructor, she was friendly and She worked well with her and she is traditionally shy, Her feedback was instructional but fairly given which I like especially for an 11 year old .

I'm impressed with how well Brianna does instructing online. My daughter is learning and Brianna is catching her "bad habits" before they become ingrained. She does all of this in a very positive way. She's a great instructor!

Experience

Oboe teacher

Jan, 2015 - Present

Self-employed

I have been teaching for several years through TakeLessons and have loved every second of it! I work with my students to make learning oboe fun by not just focusing on standard repertoire, but also any other songs from pop culture/movies/etc. that the student might be interested in. I also try to make my lessons very well-rounded by including music theory, singing, and ear training.

Oboe section

Sep, 2014 - Jun, 2018

UCLA Ensembles

During my 4 years at UCLA, I played different oboe parts in numerous ensembles, such as Philharmonia, Wind Ensemble, Opera, Chamber Orchestra, Hooligan Theater, and more.

3rd oboe/English horn

Sep, 2013 - Jan, 2014

San Diego City Ballet Orchestra

During my senior year in high school, I had the opportunity to perform The Nutcracker with the San Diego City Ballet orchestra 11 times. The Nutcracker had many English horn solos which allowed me to broaden my playing skills, as well as giving me to chance to perform with a great orchestra.
