Hello! My name is Elise. I was born in Belgium, raised by an American mother and a Swiss father. For twenty years, I have been teaching children to adults of various ages. I have a Master's degree in Intercultural Studies, which makes me an expert at understanding and connecting with people from any cultural background. I am an encouraging, energetic, and culturally sensitive teacher. I work hard to kindly provide consistent corrections to my students. I taught English online to students aged 6-11 in China. I prepared the lesson by using various props and notecards to make it as easy as possible for the student to learn English. I also used a rewards system and stuffed animals to encourage them and make the lesson fun.

Taught a program called Shine in a refuge for women rescued out of sex trafficking in Antwerpen, Belgium. The Shine program encourages women to have a personal understanding of their worth, strength, and purpose.

Alongside the orphans' counselor, I did different drama exercises with the children. It was fascinating to see how the drama exercises reflected the child's psychological state. It gave the counselor another perspective on some of the children's issues. She and I also collaborated on how she can continue doing drama exercises with the children individually and as a group. It was amazing to see how in a short period of time it brought out the needs of the kids but also bonded them closer together as a group.

THEATER / MUSICAL THEATER / IMPROV EXPERIENCE

I substitute in-person Dutch classes for students aged 3-11 in North Hollywood. I read through the teacher's instructions and materials to use to prepare. I add my own flare to it by thinking through how to make the lesson engaging and enjoyable. Then before class, I make sure all the materials are ready for the students whether it's books or workbooks they will need to use. I do my best to get through as many of the teacher's requests as possible. However, they always give me more than enough material and they do not expect me to have covered all of it for them because it's better to have too much material than not enough.

I can speak four languages, so I understand what it is like to learn a new language, which makes me an excellent French teacher. Being born and raised in Belgium it was not optional in my Flemish or English-speaking schools to not learn French from 5-10th grade. French grammar was the most difficult for me to learn but I am grateful for the French tutor I had growing up that helped me understand the grammar better. Therefore, I want to do the same for others. I truly believe in the power of believing in others because eventually, they could excel in a subject they never thought they could. This newfound confidence can then be a catalyst to expand remarkable connections and opportunities. Thank you for the opportunity to be your new favorite French teacher :)

I enjoyed taking lessons from Elise. She put a lot of work into making sure I could pronounce German words correctly. I got some basic understanding before going on a trip to Germany. Her lesson helped me to understand some sineage and simple instructions. I recommend her as a German teacher.

I suddenly came to America from Korea 5 months ago. Elise's class helps me a lot because I am not good at English. I couldn't meet the class for a long time because of the bad internet environment, but Elise waited patiently for me and didn't give up. Thank you very much. 
Elise listens to my pronunciation and corrects it and checks my homework well. Also, I am studying happily by providing YouTube videos that help me study English. I recommend Elise to all beginners who want to speak English well. You will be able to meet a teacher who answers all questions sincerely with bright and positive energy.

Elise is very focused on working through the challenging nuances of Dutch vowel combinations.  Suggestions going forward include:
1) increasing the amount of time spent speaking in Dutch during lessons; 
2) focusing on one or two aspects / elements of Dutch grammar each week to practice in conversations each week

Elise is a motivated teacher and a native speaker of my target language (Dutch).  She is enthusiastic and takes great care in modeling the pronunciation of dutch vowel combinations, many of which are sounds that do not exist in English and are challenging for non-native speakers.  On this I think she does a very good job.  As a suggestion for improvement, I think that two things could make a difference.  1) To endeavor during the lesson to speak Dutch as much as possible, providing more opportunities to model pronunciation and also to practice sentence structure; and 2) to develop each lesson around a grammatical concept or concepts that could be practiced during the lesson.

I have been really impressed with Elise. She is very professional, organized and fun to learn with. It is easy to communicate with her outside of the online classroom as well.

Elise was supportive, motivating and very friendly. She’s a very experienced teacher and can fit with any student's learning needs.

Very interactive lessons. My biggest weakness is pronouncing the ch and r.  With Elise, I'm finally getting better at them!
