My lessons are informal and engaging. I do not follow a strict schedule and leave room for creativity and spontaneity. I follow the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program curriculum, a national standard and pioneer in music education, and I encourage my students each year to take the exams for musicianship and theory for the appropriate grade level. I incorporate my classical piano training in my lessons, and my interests span from jazz piano, gospel, to contemporary music. My teaching philosophy entails the acknowledgment that each piano student is different and that is why I'm a firm believer in having a personalized yet structured lesson, so that it promotes creativity while strengthening the technical aspect of each student. My teaching style consists of intense training in virtuosic technique while incorporating musicality and expression into the music. My method of teaching is one that is driven with motivation, dedication, consistency, and persistence. I am very enthusiastic about sharing my knowledge of music to anyone who is interested in making music a fun and wonderful learning experience.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a mid-sized music room, with an upright piano, a digital keyboard, guitar, recording equipment, and a computer in the studio.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect the student to have a piano/keyboard.

*** Specialties ***
Classical, jazz, gospel, pop, musical theater genres for piano and voice. Specializes in beginning and intermediate students but teaches all levels for piano and voice. Music theory and songwriting are also offered.

About Serena
Hello! My name is Serena!

Music shapes my life and has made me the person I am today. My experience in training in opera, musical theatre, jazz, and pop has expanded my musical skills and knowledge. Not only have I been trained in performance, but I have also studied music history, music theory, conducting, movement training, ballet, Alexander Technique, acting, yoga, stage craft, improvisation, other languages, diction and the International Phonetic Alphabet, voice science and anatomy, and vocal pedagogy. I have completed my Bachelor of Music in Operatic Vocal Performance from the prestigious Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University under the tutelage of the legendary Carol Vaness. I have also studied with acclaimed teachers and coaches around the world including Dr. Kari Ragan and Maestro Dean Williamson.

This year has been w
onderfully packed with performance for Seattle Opera. I just closed out a 78 performance run of CINDERELLA IN SPAIN where I sang the role of CINDERELLA and was even on the poster! I also performed the roles for the Seattle Opera preview performances of GRETEL in HANSEL UND GRETEL, VIOLETTA in LA TRAVIATA, KATYA in KATYA KABANOVA, and QUEEN OF THE NIGHT in MAGIC FLUTE. I made my Seattle Opera debut singing ALITSA and RACCOON in their touring production of "OUR EARTH", as well as performing on the mainstage in many productions. My upcoming performances include singing in the Seattle Opera kick off to the season SUMMERFEST in July; and OLYMPIA in LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN with Pacific Northwest Opera. My other roles include ALKANDRE in PENELOPE with Vespertine Opera in Seattle, WA; FRASQUITA in CARMEN with OperaBend in Bend, Oregon and Pacific Northwest Opera; and SUSANNA in LE NOZZE DI FIGARO with the Seattle Opera Guild. I also made my international debut in December 2014 singing GRETEL in HANSEL UND GRETEL with Opera Mariposa in Vancouver, BC. I have also been the featured soloist as "Christine" in Ten Grand's Phantom of the Opera at Benaroya Hall in Seattle, WA, and many lead roles in both opera and musical theatre: such as Semele (Semele), Marie (La Fille du Regiment), Gretel (Hansel und Gretel), Countess Ceprano and Gilda (Rigoletto), Blondchen (Die Entfuehrung aus dem Serail), Maria (West Side Story), La Fee (Cendrillon), Sarah Brown (Guys and Dolls), Cathy (The Last 5 Years), Rosina (Barber of Seville), and more! I have also been part of jazz ensembles, and won the Battle of the Bands at Indiana University with a rock group! I am proud to have won the Seattle Opera Guild/Opera Plus Young Artist Scholarship Award for the 2015/2016 season, the Encouragement Award in the Metropolitan Opera National Council District Auditions, First Place in the National Classical Singers Competition, the C.M. Gerber Scholarship, Music Dean's Scholarship, Music Faculty Award, First Place at Washington State Solo and Ensemble Competitions, First Place in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) National Competitions, and many more!

Teaching brings me such joy! To share the love of music and to educate the musicians of tomorrow is both gratifying and inspiring. I have been teaching since 2005 and provide a fun and focused learning experience where there are no "wrong" questions, and everybody's unique voice is celebrated! Many of my students have gone on to study music in college, and have landed lead roles in musical theatre, choir solos, All State and All Northwest choirs, and won awards in Classical competitions.

In my spare time, I like to hike, eat good food, and spend time with family and friends!

*** Lesson Details ***
My studio provides musical knowledge through private lessons including healthy vocal technique, basic understanding of music theory, and basic piano skills. I encourage a fun and focused environment. Come ready to learn, and let's make music!

A typical lesson will include vocalises that detail proper technique, some ear training work, some music theory training, and will be followed by repertoire. During this time, students will learn how to produce clear and authentic diction (English and other languages), breath management, phrase shaping, smooth transitions between higher and lower pitches, stylistic ornamentation, as well as dramatic involvement of the piece.

Students will learn the importance of the foundations of breath support, and how to create a healthy sound for any genre while keeping the unique qualities of their own voice-- no cookie-cutter singers here! Students will also learn how to read music, practice effectively, perform authentically, and take care of their delicate instrument for a lifetime of singing!

While Skype is a marvelous tool that has revolutionized the world of teaching, nothing can replicate natural acoustics. In-studio lessons are suggested for a clearer and more personable lesson.
**Skype lessons are reserved for long distance students only**

STUDIO ABSENCE and CANCELLATION POLICIES:
Regularly scheduled and attended lessons are the best way to see positive changes in your voice! The smooth running of the Studio Schedule helps make that happen. Therefore, missing lessons is discouraged and make up lessons/cancellations are not given in the Studio unless:
- I have had a performance or rehearsal that conflicts with our lesson time and cannot have the lesson as scheduled. If this occurs, I will inform you of the event as soon as possible and give you the option of a make up lesson or cancelling the lesson.
- Notices of foreseen cancellations (family vacations, religious holidays, school functions, special occasions etc.) are eligible for rescheduling or cancellation if given before the first lesson of the month.
- Of course, life can throw us for a loop! Illness, emergencies, and unforeseen events may possibly be given make ups or cancellations and will be determined at the Studio's discretion. (In the matter of illness: standard procedure is that if the student can attend work/school, they should come to their lesson. A cold can easily be worked around. If the voice is affected (for singing students), Studio time can still be used to work on ear training, music theory, music history, etc.)

All other absences will result in the lesson being marked as "missed". A hard copy of the Studio Policies and further details will be given to the student at the first lesson. Please feel free to ask any questions or clarifications.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The studio lessons take place in a designated area of my home. The room includes seating for parents to observe lessons as well as a weighted keyboard (88 keys), music stand, desk, and materials. No pets. Lots of street parking is available. Shopping and coffee/food located within walking distance.

*** Specialties ***
Specialties: Classical/Opera
Other styles and genres: Musical Theatre, Jazz, Pop, and Rock.

Serena taught my 8 year old son for 9 beginner lessons. The scheduling did not work out for us to continue.

I loved her teaching style! She is calm but also fun for the boy. He loved the warm up exercises. In only 30 minutes of class they were able to play several little pieces. My son could then practice and master them at home. That gave him a sense of accomplishment. This approach is better than working on a hard piece and being frustrated. She focused on sight reading from the start instead of memorizing which is a great habit.

Serena is excellent! She shares my interest in both vocal training and vocal pedagogy, so she can explain the physiology of what I'm doing wrong when that happens - frequently in my case. She is a delight to work with. Encouraging. Intelligent. Professional. I'm sad to have to drop lessons for now.

I've been playing the piano since I was seven years old. After going to college and studying music education, I started teaching piano and have fallen in love with this job. I love music and I love sharing it with others. I've been teaching piano for over 30 years. My students receive individualized lessons based on their interest and ability. They learn to read music notation, play core piano literature, learn proper playing technique, theory, music history, and composition.
All students participate in a yearly recital and have the option of entering the NJMTA Piano Festival to be adjudicated each year.
I have a two-fold goal with each student: that she or he become an excellent musician, and that we have fun together as that happens.

Lesson Details
Each lesson from the very beginning includes some technique, whether that is pe
ntascales (5-note scales), full scales and chords, etudes, etc. Then we work on repertoire, learning new songs which challenge the student to expand his/her musicianship skills, with beginners using a lesson book while intermediate and advanced students become familiar with the traditional body of piano literature.
For beginners, theory is taught using accompanying theory books. For more intermediate/advanced students, theory is incorporated into the lesson using the music the student is studying.
Composing can be added into the lesson when the student is ready. The student is guided through the process of writing a song and then enters it into the computer and prints it out for their very own copy. When enough students have completed original compositions, I host a composition recital where students can play their creations.

I'm an adult piano student who's never taken any piano lessons before. I committed myself to 5 lessons with Jennifer to see if we would be the right fit for each other. After about 10 lessons, I can tell you that she is an excellent piano instructor! She is very detail oriented and knows when to challenge you and when to provide more guidance. When you don't understand something, she's very good at explaining it at multiple angles. She jots down notes on problem areas, which helps when you practice. During the lesson, she ensures that you have good foundations, such as hand positioning and other motor skills. She prioritizes a portion of the lesson to important fundamentals, such as scales, chords, and music theory. All the while, she always keeps things interesting through a variety of songs. Overall, she's great at bringing out my strengths and addressing my weaknesses. I feel as if she's fully invested in me to be the best that I can be, so I'm confident that she would do the same for you or your child. Definitely would recommend!

I specialize in upright bass, jazz bass, funk bass, bass technique, and rhythm. I will inspire a positive attitude and good practice habits that will help any student succeed. I’ve extensively studied jazz, latin jazz, funk, rock music, hip hop, bluegrass, folk, and composition.

I can also teach guitar, piano, drums, and voice. As a mulit-instrumentalist, jamming with my students is a priority. Being able to play with other musicians is one of the best feelings you’ll ever experience. I’m happy to take you there!

Recently, I helped one of my bass players get a scholarship to go to Berklee Summer Camp to study music.

I am very excited to continue my teaching on TakeLessons. I look forward to helping new students to become the musician of their dreams.

I've been playing professionally in Chicago for five years where I play up
right for a classical chamber pop group called the Nine Worlds Ensemble and for a jazz group with Frank Catalano, a popular Chicago sax-man. I co-managed, played upright bass, and sang for an ambient-folk band, Sedgewick, based in Chicago. I've played upright bass in the Frank Catalano and Jimmy Chamberlin (drummer for Smashing Pumpkins) super group and Bowmanville.

I am currently dreaming up my own jazz-inspired project called the ohm trio. Working on my debut record under my solo name ohm. Be on the look out!

I am a professional worship leader and pianist, as well as a professional teacher. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Music, specifically voice and piano, from Columbia International University and a Master of Arts in Teaching early childhood and elementary education from that same school. I have been in this industry since I was a child, working both professionally and in a volunteer capacity. I have done everything from touring with choral groups, to directing musicals, to conducting children and adult choirs, to writing and arranging music for choirs and students, to teaching individual and group lessons.

My passion is the music of the church, but I am classically trained and have taught many different styles throughout my career, from Broadway to gospel and many things in between. I endeavor with each of my students to find their p
assion and goals before we ever dig in to the mechanics of learning to play so that I can direct your lessons in the way that best suits you. If playing off of a chord chart with a band is your goal, I can make your lessons suit that purpose. If you want to work toward competitions as a classical musician, I can help there too. I can also help if all you want to do is play for your own enjoyment or raise a well rounded child who appreciates the arts! While the basics of music theory are foundational and need to be taught, the techniques and methodology can be adjusted to suit your needs, whatever they may be.

I look forward to speaking with you and getting the chance to help you fall in love with music and to work toward your goals.

"Music is what feelings sound like." ~Anonymous

Music:
I am a lead vocalist, a pianist and a songwriter. I love all genres of music, harmonizing and songwriting are my passion.

I teach music outside the box by listening to the goals of my students and incorporating passion, inspiration, creativity, and imagination towards those goals. The proper techniques are easily taught in a fun, positive manner instead of something that most people dread to learn or practice.

There are so many different processes individuals use to learn, and being creative is an excellent catalyst to build and motivate learning experiences. I have been teaching piano, singing, composition and songwriting or over five amazing years.

Whilst attending Canyon Crest Academy, I spent 3 years in a vocal conservatory where I dedicated over one thousand hours of
extra-curricular activity in music theory, music history, and classical, operatic, and modern vocal practices. I spent 4 years being a member of their highly esteemed choir. I've been singing in choirs for sixteen years taking on solo roles. The Folklore Guild was a previous choral project I loved being a member of, and I have experience being in a band.

——————————————————————————————
Yoga:
When I was introduced to the world of Yoga, I instantly wanted to understand the historic background and benefits. My yogic journey began with practicing daily yoga at sunrise. Through Rachel Lubich’s School of Yoga, I received my 200-hour Vinyasa Yoga Teacher Training hosted by Trilogy Sanctuary in La Jolla, California.

Each path I take guides to seeing and understanding what Yoga means to me. Yoga is an opportunity to find harmony in my mind, body and spirit through my intentions, breath, actions, stillness, movement and music, mindfulness, meditation and truly listening to the highest vibratory version of who I Am on a breath-to-breath rhythm.

"Yoga is not a religion, but an inclusive lifestyle that guides to be the best version of one's Self. Yoga should be for the individual student." ~ Rachel Lubich

Students learning from more experienced students learning from more experienced students; my journey has only begun.

I am a student at BYU-Idaho. I have always loved listening to music and I always said to myself, "I wish I knew how to play the guitar." I know some of you have said the same to yourself. One day, after receiving some inspiration from my brother, I decided to just go for it and buy a guitar. I immediately fell in love and I have practiced every day since then. I am still learning, as we all are, but I know that I have some valuable skills and knowledge that will be able to help any beginner guitar player. I know what will you help you because I have been there.

I am willing to travel to your home or do lessons online. I will help teach any genre but I especially love to teach Rock, Metal, Blues, Punk, Acoustic, etc.
