Music Theory

I am a Musical Director who has scored original music for many motion pictures and television and was musical arranger for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. I've scored and arranged original music for several television shows including, Desperate Housewives, MTV's Making the Band, It's Showtime at the Apollo and numerous series on PBS, A & E and Disney, . I have also served as on-set vocal and piano coach for many Disney TV series.  

As a piano instructor, I believe in giving every student a foundation in classical music..  I enjoy teaching and playing Jazz and pop as well.

I've worked with students  ages 5-90.  I simply love the teaching process and respect every student's journey.  Mixing structure and discipline with a positive teaching style, I work to inspire students to be their best within a well structured curriculum that is fun and engaging.

Music must be fun...always!

*** Lesson Details ***
My students see progress.  I don't believe in cookie-cutter instruction.  I take the time to learn a students individual comprehension of the musical language and their learning style.  I also build a practice schedule that is realistic and creates growth.  Music instruction should not feel like a burden, but should be joyful.  It's a process I have respected.  Whether you are 90 or 9, you can learn music, love music and feel its presence by playing an instrument or singing.  My job is to communicate that joy and show you how you can do it for yourself.

Learning to master a musical instrument is a two way commitment and I will always give you my full effort as I love the results.

For beginning Piano-Intermediate, I have embraced the James Bastien series, as I believe it paces the young student and builds a foundation on a musical and pedagogical level.
Vocally, I follow a classical technique, but use that foundation as a basis to meet the goals of the singer for the style they want to achieve.

Our daughter’s lesson was extremely professional. Steve’s knowledge, experience and teaching skills & philosophy are excellent. Our daughter walks away with so much excitement and pride and looks forward to working on her homework, and of course, her next lesson scheduled! 

Steve is an excellent teacher - very patient and thorough. His method is logical and easy to follow. He also brings a wealth of knowledge on technical details, which I find very interesting. I would highly recommend Steve, no matter if you’re just starting out, or want to refresh your piano technique.

Steve is an excellent musician and gifted teacher. He is intuitive and nurtures individual talent.

24 yo Baritone | I've taken singing lessons with Steve for about 10 months. Before starting, I had moderate singing experience from competitive high school choirs but had regressed by picking up a few bad habits in the 6-ish years since. 

I came in with few specific goals aside from becoming a better all-around singer.

Steve initially helped me improve my technique and cultivate a fuller sound using a variety of physicalization exercises. Since, we have progressed through songs he selected that each challenged certain parts of my voice while also highlighting my strengths. We'd keep coming back to songs I struggled with until I developed the desired skill. In that way, each song kind of brought its own lesson. 

10 months later, I have a collection of songs I can perform confidently. In this time, we've also spent time on music theory and focusing on new skills I grew interested in improving (like singing with quiet intensity). 

Finally, it's also important to note that Steve has always been patient, kind, and supportive. I was nervous before starting singing lessons again, but his gentle though direct feedback put me at ease quickly.

Steve is simply awesome! He is patient and great with kids. My 5 year old was so comfortable and learned a lot even on his first day.

it was my sons first lesson and he thought Steve was very good!  He is excited to go back for another lesson.

1st lesson ever for my 14-yr old son and it went great!  Steve did a great job checking in a couple days prior to confirm a few details and sent great directions - he's in the newer part of his neighborhood so the aerial pic he sent was more up to date than the map on our phones, that helped a lot.

Steve is experienced in many areas of music.  He explains everything carefully, and best of all, he is thoughtful, caring, and patient!

Steve is making singing, which seemed absolutely impossible, seem possible. He presents it as set of interrelated skills, at least while I'm still brand new to it. Helps me to see a path rather than decide "I'm just not a singer" as I always thought. I'm finding singing classes to be more challenging, encouraging, and a lot more fun than I expected!!
