Eric E.

Grand Rapids, MI

About Eric

Hey there! I'm excited you dropped by my profile. I'm even more excited that you are thinking about taking music lessons or are planning on giving the gift of music lessons to a loved one. A little bit about me so you can understand how my teaching benefits my students: I went to DePaul University in Chicago,IL and studied Music (voice) and Religious Studies. I have been teaching guitar, voice, banjo, drum and piano lessons professionally for three years, however, I've been teaching on and off again for over ten. Through that time I've taught diverse groups of people, all with different skil
l levels. No matter where you are on your musical journey or who you are, I can help get you where you want to go!I also have extensive experience as a professionally touring musician. I currently front and manage my band The Northern Skies. If you are looking to start playing with a band, professionally or otherwise, I can help you on that path. Remember: it doesn't matter what skill level you are now! I can help you get there!

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe that every lesson should be fun and comfortable! Depending on the students age and skill level, I pick out books that work for each student, and also ask the student to bring in a piece that they want to work on. Maybe we can learn that new radio hit or the oldie but a goodie that you've been wanting to learn for years! However, learning from books or internet videos alone do not offer the kind of one on one attention students need while learning an instrument. I have the experience needed and a unique curriculum that is based off of understanding the student's musical goals. For beginners, I teach basic techniques and chords through easy songs to get the student playing as soon as possible.Learning music has to be fun! I am a very laid back and believe that learning music involves good communication, having an open mind, and the desire to have fun and LEARN! So I can be very laid back while interacting with students and their families. However, learning to play an instrument takes a lifetime of practice. Even the pros practice every day! Therefore, practice is a vital part of taking lessons and something I take very seriously. I hope you will choose me as your music teacher!

*** Studio Equipment ***
The teacher's home studio lessons are taught in a downstairs home office/music room. The home includes electric guitars, bass, amps, acoustic guitars, classical acoustic guitar, drum set, electric piano and books. Seating is available. Wireless internet is available.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide the programming. I expect students to provide their own instrument and to buy the required materials (e.g. book if applicable)

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching students guitar, voice, and banjo. However, I am able to teach a wide range of instruments because of my education and experience as a professional musician.

He's really flexible about time. The lesson themselves are great and gives me time in between lessons to practice. He doesn't just teach me just what he plans, but is open to questions and discussion on music. Recommend!

Eric has helped me learn to play the ukelele. I was very much a beginner, and he has helped me progress to know several different chords and strum styles. Eric is kind, personable, and willing to help with what you, the student, want to learn.

Elizabeth B.

Grand Rapids, MI

About Elizabeth

I am a professional singer living in Grand Rapids, MI with a passion for teaching. My goal is to help my students become good musicians while sharing the joy and love of music with them. I have a Bachelor of Music from Grand Valley State University in Vocal Performance and a Master of Music from the Chicago College of Performing Arts in Voice Performance. From humble beginnings, I have maintained a busy studio since 2011. Since then, I have helped dozens of students excel and grow as singers several of whom have gone on to study music in college.

I hold membership in the National Associati
on of Teachers of Singing, Sigma Alpha Iota and Michigan School Vocal Music Association. Through these organizations, my students have the opportunity to perform and be adjudicated by other music professionals, they also have the opportunity to compete for scholarships.

**** Due to time constraints and construction traffic in Grand Rapids, I am no longer able to offer lessons from your home ****

~What can you expect in our lessons?~

I strive to help my students become independent musicians as well as more confident singers. We work diligently to create healthy, well supported sounds. Whether we are working on classical music or pop music, it is all rooted in the same techniques. I emphasize proper breathing, support, posture, resonance, clarity, pure tone, power without pushing, and building vocal range.

We will always start by warming up. I use exercises designed to target the specific areas I've outlined above. From there, we will work on building technical skills based on the students need and skills.

My young singers (12 and under) will use the book "Singing Lessons for Little Singers" in their lessons.

Please note:

***We will not work on songs until the student is comfortable reading basic solfege melodies.***

We will work extensively on the use of solfege until the student is comfortable reading music. This can take a month or more depending the students abilities and practice habits.

After the student is comfortable with solfege and reading music, we will find repertoire that will provide appropriate challenges and opportunities for both growth and success. I always welcome input from students for styles they would like to sing.

I especially love working with beginning students helping them build their technique, learn about music, and find their voice. Some of my most successful students have had no experience singing before taking voice lessons.

~What styles will we work on?~

My training has been centered in classical music but I also am an avid lover of Jazz, Musical Theater, and Singer/Song Writer, Folk, and Pop music.

~Lessons in my studio~

I have an electric keyboard, computer with printer, and a sitting area for parents to observe while their children are working and learning. My studio is also pet-free.

I reached out to Elizabeth having no knowledge of singing at all, but this didn't deter her from taking me on as a student. Going into the first lesson I was extremely nervous and having second thoughts. After leaving that first lesson I found I would have a new hobby that I would passionately pursue and that there was no reason to be nervous.

Elizabeth is a great teacher with a matching personality that makes you feel as comfortable as possible (which is great when you are a complete beginner to singing like I am) and makes the learning process interactive and fun. She is quick to respond to any questions and will give you exercises to practice at home as well.

I have learned a lot more than I thought I could about my voice in such a short time. My voice, knowledge, and confidence have all improved. I would recommend anyone to take voice lessons with her!

Val L.

Spring Lake, MI

About Val

Val has been teaching Piano and Kindermusik for over 10 years. She began teaching private piano lessons while living in Hazelwood, MO and after moving to North Liberty, IA in 2008, she opened MusicEveryday and quickly grew from 2 to 23 students per week. In 2011, she joined Marek Szmyrgala as a piano teacher at Music4Life in North Liberty and added another 13 students to her weekly teaching schedule. All of her students had a variety of interests in music from classical, to jazz, to pop and even wrote their own music. Val prepared her students for 2 recitals every year and several students
participated in the Music Development Program, all earning First Class Honors.
The foundation of my teaching philosophy is the awareness of how different every person is in the way that they learn. My first goal when I meet a new student is getting to know them before choosing materials. It is the student’s learning style that should determine the method and materials that I assign.

I appreciate how Val takes the time to explain everything to me. I also, liked the practices she assigned that involved exercising my fingers and playing the keys.

My kids agree that Miss Val was our favorite piano teacher. Four of them took piano lessons from her for a few years recently.
Miss Val uses fun and creative strategies to engage the littlest students. She manages to stay calm and kind but firm when needed.
Miss Val caters to each student's style and interests. She often brings in extra music and fun, supplemental learning material.
Miss Val helps students establish good habits and provides motivation to practice regularly. I am positive she will be your favorite teacher, too!

My son Noel started learning Piano from Val. Because of Val's teaching he is able to learn Piano very quickly, even though we don't have any music background. Val is a wonderful teacher, we would highly recommend Val.
