Acting

I am a professional New York based actor with 25 years of experience.  A graduate of The Actors Studio, New School University, MFA, I have performed Off Broadway at Cherry Lane Theatre, Ensemble Studio Theatre and Theatre Row. 

In 2015 I began co-producing and acting in short films with Sideway Brothers, including Nuclear Knack Knacks (winner of Best Dark Comedy Micro Short at the Portland Comedy Film Festival) and Bande de Juenes (winner of an award at the New Renaissance Film Festival in London).  I have also appeared in various other shorts produced in New York and New Jersey. 

Having grown up in a military family, I did not find my roots until I moved to New York to study acting in 1995.  I'm a longstanding supporter of Greenpeace and The Nature Conservancy.  I enjoy singing, cooking and travel.

I specialize in coaching actors for auditions for film, television, agents, casting directors, theatrical performances or drama schools.  Whether you are starting out on your journey as an actor or already have extensive experience, together we will make your audition distinctive.  You may need one or two sessions to prepare for a self tape, or to work over an extended time to craft a role for film or theater.  I will be there, in your corner, to help you focus your creativity and be successful.  

I will help you define the specific situation of your character; and ask you provocative questions to help you journey deeply into the role.  We will find the key to tapping into your own life experience to bring the role to life.  In addition, I can give you tips on setting up your home studio.  

The industry has changed dramatically in the past two years.  SELF TAPING your auditions and submitting the digital media to casting directors, agents and film producers has become the new standard way to audition.  

I have an MFA in Drama from The Actors Studio Drama Program at the New School in New York City as well as 25 years of experience as an actor in theater and film.  I look forward to working with you!

John was a fantastic coach! I was struggling with embodying two scenes for an indie film audition. He helped me explore myself and hence deeply portray the character. What the bio will never confirm for you, however, are the some of the most critical aspects of being a teacher: Empathy, ability to meet you where you are, trust, a method of instruction that really works—in each of these categories, John has delivered for me. We have just started our work together but I already feel like I can really trust him with my artistic decisions and the wild directions some of my scene work will go. 
John posses a keen perception, and has been able to quickly help me identify barriers to relaxing and being in the moment. He has helped me learn more about the defensive quarks and the behaviors I’ve built up, which actually impede my ability to command a performance. His attention to detail is remarkable in this regard. He has an almost clinical ability to dissect characters, find objectives, and discover new creative avenues. Finally, John has a healthy sense of humor, a quality which is always good to have in a mentor/teacher.

John is an amazing coach with a real wealth of experience in theatre and acting.  He really knows how to fine-tune audition material and help you land the part!

I do Stand-Up Comedy in midtown Manhattan and elsewhere.   John has been a tremendous help to me as a coach.  I continually schedule sessions with him, especially  when I am developing a new routine or bringing back an older routine.  
We work on two areas:   Delivery and substance.   
I find John’s experience as an actor invaluable in helping me develop the delivery of my routine.   He advises me on pacing and on attitude – crucial in Stand-Up.
I also ask John for his opinions regarding the substance of my routines - structure and contents. It’s very important in Stand-Up to have drama and clear organization.  John’s comments are always on-target and have helped me greatly.
John has provided me with a safe forum where I can present my material to him in rehearsal mode.  He asks thoughtful questions which lead me to improve my routines so they will have a greater impact on the imaginations of the members of my audience.

John recently helped me with a zoom audition.   He guided me to choices that were more nuanced and more honest.  I got a callback!  The director loved the audition and I loved working with John. Very wise and patient.

John has been a great mentor and teacher of mine for the last six years! He not only draws on a wealth of experience across theater and film, but was deeply attuned to my personal growth during our time together. Very few acting coaches I've trained with were both expert at their craft and sensitive to the vulnerable experience of learning -- John was both! He commands a depth of canon knowledge and was able to suggest great monologues for me, including several Shakespeare monologues.
