Left and right hands can be used to create arpeggios and chords. 

How to arpeggiate

You can put the together these two parts to play the beginning of the etude in thirds. The arpeggio is a left hand chord. The thirds are in the right. Thus, when completed, you can essentially sing the rest of the song. The scale is key here.

Trills in thirds

Thirds in E major using a doubling technique. There are four black keys in the scale for the right hand and similarly four black keys in the left hand for the key.  Thus, there is a total of eight black keys for the scale in the thirds.

Moving thirds through the major key and into the relative minor key. The chords used are B flat and g minor.
