Piano

I’m a guitarist and songwriter in several bands in the Portland area. I graduated from Berklee College of Music with a Bachelors in Songwriting.

I have taught guitar, production, and songwriting in Portland and the Rogue Valley for many years. As my student, I will work with you to map out where you’d like to get to as a musician and exactly how to get there. Music is an incredibly satisfying form of self expression, and I can help you discover and express your musical “voice;” the thing that makes Jimmy Page or Angus Young or Bruce Springsteen sound distinctly like themselves. 

I tailor my teaching method to individual students based on their interests and goals, but some things I like to teach are: fundamentals of music theory, songwriting techniques, lead guitar/improvisation, sight reading, and practice techniques. 
I specialize in rock/alternative/metal guitar and songwriting, but I am trained in both classical and jazz theory as well. 

As a solo artist, I’ve released two EP’s, I’ve performed in many bands, and written and produced music for various clients. I've played venues like the Star Theater, Dante's and the High Watermark and my current band is releasing our second EP in 2024. 

When I’m not playing music, I can be found throwing frisbee for my dog, reading, or watching the occasional B-horror movie.

Learning the piano should be fun and exciting! In your lessons we'll focus on rhythms, hand dexterity, and learning to read music at your own pace. Playing with other musicians is one of the most important and rewarding musical experiences, and we'll play lots of duets so you can get that valuable experience first hand. I have extensive experience teaching all age and skill levels and will customize your learning plan to meet your needs and goals.

My daughter felt at ease and comfortable.  He helped us know what kind of guitar and equipment to buy her and where to go.

Joel is great! He explains things in a way that’s easy to understand to anyone and makes sure to work on the things you want to work on to meet your personal goals.

Josh was flexible and responsive to schedule changes. We established a lesson plan and made progress in each lesson.

Great first lesson, he's a good listener and a good teacher

Joel is teaching piano to our (very strong-willed) eight year old. Joel is doing a great job of meeting her where she is and instilling her with a love for music. She's really enjoying the process and sometimes even waits by the window before lesson time because she can't wait for her lesson!

Our nine year old daughter absolutely loves having Joel as her piano teacher. He is fun, kind and helping her make great progress. Most importantly, she is loving the experience of learning her first instrument - which is what we care about most.

He’s an amazing teacher. He focuses on things that are relevant to my musical goals. He easily breaks down topics I have trouble with. I never run out of things to practice. I am very happy with my experience.

Joel has been very patient and kind in his teaching style. He remains calm and encouraging when beginner mistakes happen which is crucial with teaching our boy.

Joel has been fantastic! He's exceptionally accommodating, flexible and patient. As an adult picking up a new instrument, he has been nothing but supportive and informative. I particularly value his clear and simple explanations of difficult theories and playing methods. Thank you Joel!
