A few tips and ideas to help play and write drop d guitar riffs. This is one of several different common approaches to using a drop D guitar tuning. It is probably the most applicable to the newer electric guitar player who wants to play and write in the heavier rock styles.  I really recommend doing this type of playing standing up if you can. I'm sitting on for the purpose of filming. Try to play around with it and have some fun.

I've been a professional instructor for 25+ years including online instruction since 2020. I grew up in central Illinois and the Chicago area before moving out west. I was fascinated with the guitar almost as long as I can remember. It didn't matter the style. From watching Roy Clark and Buck Owens to listening to every rock band I could find there was very little guitar playing that I wasn't interested in. So, blues, rock, metal, punk, alternative, Americana, R an B, funk, and Jazz were all part of that. Rock and blues were always at the core of what I liked, but it goes so much beyond that. A lot of very good musician friends, instructors, and professors were around to learn from. It lead to me having very eclectic musical and personal taste. That variety and versatility has driven me a player to always search for more from my playing.  As an instructor I try to provide the benefit of that same experience to my students whatever their musical skill level and aspirations might be.

Learn guitar at whatever level you are comfortable. I have 25+ years of experience with Guitar and Bass instructing professionally. In that time I've developed the ability to tailor a specific curriculum and methods to each individual student, I teach all modern styles with an emphasis on rock. From Alice in Chains to Zeppelin and everything in between. Blues, R and B, Reggae, Funk, and any other and all playing styles. Using real world songs that my students choose I work with them to play and understand those songs. As necessary working though the music theory and techniques like lead and rhythm playing, slide, tremolo use, tapping, finger picking, hybrid picking, note bending, vibrato, and improvisation. I also work with my students as needed to help them with selecting the guitars, amps and gear they are looking for to help them get that sound they would like to have. Every student I've ever worked with has been different in their goals, tastes, and skill levels. So I do whatever I can to provide a positive, productive, and fun  experience to make that happen.

T.K. is a very patient teacher that is excellent with beginners. He shows that he is truly a master of the guitar from scales and theory to basic cords and picking techniques. I was very impressed and would highly recommend him to anyone who wants to learn.

T.K.'s a great teacher.  I took lessons from him when I wasn't a beginner anymore, but definitely not a pro by any stretch of the imagination.  He helped me hone my ideas, showing me how to refine them and make them more professional.  He focused my attention on fundamentals that would apply to not only the type of music I was interested in at the time, but any type of music. T.K. is a fantastic teacher. If you want to learn to play guitar, any style, from zero to hero, he can get you there. If you have some guitar chops, he will make you better, and can zero in on what you need. He will teach you as much theory as you want or need, and all the technique you can handle. TK is very perceptive and pays attention to what you are doing, how you are doing it and how it sounds. He provides a lot of instruction on the correct way to hold, press, bend, pick, etc based on observation or listening to how you are playing. He can go into a lot of theory if you like or show you a lot of good behaviors to improve on your playing. He is very patient and will take time to try to teach you good habits and get rid of any bad habits you may have picked up playing on your own. I highly recommend him.

TK was instrumental in helping me understand the fundamentals of the guitar, but more importantly helped me find my unique songwriting and playing style. Tips for practicing the minor pentatonic. Learning the pattern is just the first step. Learning where the pattern begins and ends comes next. Remember you are training your ears just as much as your hands. Knowing where to start to apply note bends within the patterns comes next. In this video, I quickly go over how to pratice the pattern from root to root, and then how to practice where you can easily bend notes within the pattern. In both examples you will be teaching both your hands, and ears at the same time.

Tips and pointers for begining guitar players on how to play fretted notes more easily while getting better tone from them at the same time. This also includes tips on how to move to and from notes smoothly and efficiently.  I have almost never heard other instructors talk about some of these tips. I'm guessing because it's a little trickey to describe them. 

How to make fretting notes and moving from one note to the next effortless for new guitar players.

A simple chromatic scale exercise for improving fretbooard technique, finger dexterity, flexibility, picking, smoothness and finger calluses. This scale exercise is a great warm up exercise and drill for begining guitar players, but is useful to more advanced players as well. It includes pointers for smoothly connecting each note to the next, and picking tips to make you sound smoother and to make it easier to play notes, melodies, and scales of all kinds.
