Hi! My name is Kaitlin and I received my M.A. in German from the University of Oregon in 2020. I received a BA in German in 2018 alongside a Certificate in Second Language Teaching and Acquisition. I can help you with anything from conversational German to translation to complex grammatical structures.  I have successfully taught German to kindergarteners, high school students, college students, and retirees. Let's start your German learning journey together!

I worked with a variety of professors to assist in administering courses, ranging in content from sociological theory to topical courses, such as classes teaching about death and dying, marriage and family, and gender, racial, and socioeconomic inequalities. I graded homework and tests, assisted in curriculum development, and served as an intermediary between professors and students.

Graduate Teaching Assistant

I was one of the instructors for the first-year German sequence at the University of Oregon. I helped beginners achieve up to B1 fluency in one year. I used a variety of teaching approaches and tools, including games, music, and media. I also taught part an intensive summer sequence intended to propel students through one year of language learning in 3 months.

Instructor of Record

As part of obtaining my certification in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching (SLAT), I was an intern at a local elementary school. I took preparatory courses in linguistics, pedagogy, and German. I worked with a co-instructor to create a curriculum for a kindergarten class. We utilized music, dance, and play to help students develop their language skills. By the end of the course, the students knew the German alphabet, German numbers, could talk about weather, animals, and colors and could introduce themselves in German.

I began work as a Teacher Aide in a local childcare co-op and was promoted to Teacher Assistant after completing training hours through community education and college courses. I worked primarily with ages 2-4. Our curriculum was based on Reggio Emilia philosophies. Student-directed learning was at the center of our practices. We facilitated children as they discovered their own interests such as nature or music.

I worked 1-on-1 with a first grade student who had just moved from Germany. I assisted in translating homework from English to German and vice versa. I helped the student communicate with his teacher and peers via live interpretation of German to English and English to German.

Volunteer German Translator

I worked as an English as a Second Language tutor for one third grader and one kindergartener. I helped the students understand the assignments with a special emphasis on transposing Common Core math problems into simpler terms. I also assisted the parents in communicating with teachers and school administration.

Tutor

I tutored several first and second year students in Spanish afterschool while I was taking third year Spanish. Additionally, the teacher would occasionally ask high-achieving 3rd and 4th year students to assist with teaching while he was out, due to a lack of Spanish speaking substitutes. Doing this required creating an approved lesson plan and teaching several classes throughout the week. This position repeated several times through the school year.

During my sophomore year of high school, I began an application for AFS to study abroad during my junior year of high school. I left in January and lived with a host family for 6 months. Along with learning German and the Austrian culture, I also learned about where the other students had come from and what their home lives were like. I lived in a small town in Austria and my host family introduced me to the local traditions and unique style of rural Austria. I also volunteered for our local AFS chapter upon returning home.

During the summer after my high school graduation, I participated in the German American Partnership Program with 17 other students from Roseburg High School and two teachers who acted as chaperones through the trip. I stayed with a host family and attended school in Lüneburg with my host sister and the rest of the students on the trip. Outside of attending school, we went on cultural adventures to museums, historical locations, and population centers across Germany.

Hi! My name is Kaitlin and I love learning languages! I want to share that joy with you by teaching German. With a B.A. and M.A., a Second Language Acquisition and Teaching Certificate, and over a decade of teaching experience, I am confident I can teach you whatever you want to learn! While I am a non-native speaker, I have lived in both Germany and Austria. I can also empathize with the learning process and am aware of the difficulties that can arise--and am here to gently guide you through those difficulties. 

No one is too old or too young to learn a language! I have taught all ages, from preschool to retirees. I have also taught at the college level. My goal is to make fun, immersive custom lessons for all my students! Each lesson is carefully hand-crafted to best suit your learning needs and goals. I use media (songs, videos) and games to help students learn. The beginning stages of learning a language involve a lot of memorization and practice, and using these tools will help create lasting memories (in contrast to rote memorization tools, such as tests or worksheets). Language is living! We will use it, play with it, and most of all: have fun with it! 

Every January, all lessons are discounted by $5 per lesson for continuing students.

I am now offering 3 standardized curricula. These packages will be particularly helpful for people who need to learn up to a specific level of fluency (A1-B2), who are traveling to German-speaking countries and need survival vocabulary, and for young children (kindergarten-middle school) who want to start learning German!          • For true beginners, this lesson package offers a comprehensive look at pronunciation, verb conjugations in the present tense, adjective agreement, word order, cases, and negation. Vocabulary includes day-to-day vocab such as hobbies, school, work, transportation, weather, and celebrations. Discounts are staggered to reward students for passing through each phase!

         • For advanced beginners, this lesson package builds on vocabulary and concepts learned in the A1 phase with a focus on past tense conjugations. Students will learn how to talk about past events and prepare to start reading and engaging with real German media such as songs, books, and movies.

         • For intermediate learners, this lesson package focuses on learning advanced grammar constructs such as compound sentences, left and right attributes, and subjunctive moods. Students will learn how to structure arguments and express their viewpoints.

         • For advanced learners, this course will teach all remaining grammar concepts, perfect any weak points in previously covered grammar, and prepare students to work, study, or live in a German-speaking country. Time estimate from A1 to B2 (with weekly lessons) is 1 year.
