I started tutoring my fellow students when I was an undergrad at UC Berkeley.
Since I moved to LA, I've helped middle school, high school and college students (SMC, UCLA, USC)!
I've tutored all levels, from beginners to PhD students!
I can help your kids with homework, test prep, grammar, pronunciation, idioms and conversation.
And, I can help YOU if you're getting ready for a trip to France!
I'm equally comfortable teaching online, or in person if you live in the LA/Santa Monica areas.

Bonjour,
My name is Sylvan and I was born and raised in France. Tutoring French has come quite naturally to me, starting with my fellow students who needed help with their French classes, when I was an undergraduate at UC Berkeley, and then also when I was in grad school at San Francisco State University.
Since I’ve moved to Los Angeles in 2004, I’ve tutored children and young adults alike, from first graders at the Lycée Français, to PhD students at UCLA. I've become familiar with the French curriculum of various local high schools thanks to the many teenagers I have tutored, and I continue to find the teaching process enriching.
Whatever your goal is, getting an A in your next French test, or getting ready for your next trip to France, I'm confident I can help you achieve it!

My daughter, has been studying with Sylvan for about 4 years. I must say he not only helps her learn French, but when she spent over a month in France, she was able to be conversational! He has helped my daughter with her French tests and presentations. He's the reason she's in AP French. I can't say enough good things about Sylvan as a person and teacher. What a great find!! It has been several years since I took formal French classes at school. Working with Sylvan for the last 7 years has helped me regain my confidence and ability to read, write and converse in French.

I can't say enough good things about Sylvan! He's been teaching my 3 kids who ranged from complete novice to nearly fluent since 2021. He makes the lessons fun and joins my zany learners where their imaginations lead them to compose some of the silliest French sentences I've ever read. :D In addition to French, Sylvan has also been teaching my children piano. His instruction goes beyond the lessons I had as a child, and includes finger technique, hand posture, and music theory. Our lives have been enriched thanks to Sylvan and I'm so grateful for all that he's taught my children. They have progressed quickly even as Sylvan thoroughly covers the basics so I feel like they have a strong foundation upon which to keep building!
