Guitar Lessons in Provo
By Chris M. - Provo Guitar Teacher
Nestled snugly in the Utah Valley, Provo is home to a surprisingly thriving music scene. If you're taking guitar lessons in Provo, you're in good company; famous artists such as Neon Trees, Imagine Dragons, The Used, Fictionist, and Mindy Gledhill all got their start right here in Provo.
Want to hear some awesome guitarists in your area? Check out hot spots like Velour and Muse on University Avenue, and The Wall at BYU to see up-and-coming and well-established bands, singers, and songwriters. Many of these venues also host weekly open mic nights, where all are welcome to perform.
Provo is also home to several well-known professional recording studios, like June Audio, Audio West, and Studio Studio Dada. These recording studios boast a diverse clientele of artists from Neon Trees to local groups like the Lower Lights.
While the Provo area is known for its vibrant indie scene, there are lots of opportunities to experience a wide variety of music. Besides live rock music, catch a performance from the One Voice Children’s Choir, a non-profit organization that works to inspire, enrich, and uplift the community through music. You can also check out the Utah Valley Symphony, college performance groups, and performing arts and music venues like the Covey Center for the Arts and the Scera Theatre.
When you're taking guitar lessons in Provo, there are several stores to choose from if you need new strings, sheet music, or any other supplies. Some of the best music shops include Summerhays for pianos and keyboards, classical strings, and band instruments; Best in Music for sheet music, guitars, and electronic gear; and Bert Murdock Music for a mix of all of the above. Best in Music is an especially good place for guitar repair.
I teach guitar, bass, and cello, and I also play occasional gigs in the area. I have hosted clinics and sectional rehearsals at local public schools, and with the Utah Valley Youth Symphony. My first priority is to teach you how to practice on your own. This is, after all, where most of the progress takes place. I also focus on teaching you to improvise solos; we start this as early as one month into lessons. All the while, I incorporate music theory, solid rhythmic security, and a little bit of history (as much as you can handle). I also strive to help you learn to use your body; knowing which muscles are at work, avoiding unnecessary tension, breathing, and managing performance anxiety.
My philosophy is that if you work hard, and dedicate yourself, you can learn to play and perform just like your favorite rock stars! The good news is that I’m just one of several incredible guitar teachers in the Provo area. Start your guitar lessons in Provo today!
