Perseverance has always been one of my many strengths as a person and educator. My interest in teaching and education began over forty years ago. I started tutoring in my eighth grade of school and have recently retired from teaching math in the Nye County School District. After my tutoring experience in eighth grade, my interests in teaching continued in high school and I took a course that allowed me to teach small groups and individuals called the communications lab. In college, I continued my interests in teaching by attending Oregon College of Education, the number one ranked college for teacher education in the country at that time. I spent a lot of my spare time tutoring individuals and taking classes like the Math Anxiety course, which allowed me to help run the math lab in the mathematics department at Oregon College of Education at certain scheduled times. For the past thirty years I taught basic math through calculus at Tonopah High School. I have consistently prepared my students to succeed in college as well as in their careers. A large percentage of my students have passed their high school proficiency tests and many of my students have scored very well on their ACT exams. I would like to attribute this to making myself available to my students before and after school, as well as during my preparation period. I also try to keep an open line of communication with stake holders on my student’s success.
