About Me

I started the violin in Northfield, Minnesota, and since then have learned and performed music in a variety of settings. I graduated from Vassar College in May 2010 with honors in music, where I studied with Betty-Jean Hagen, a former student of Ivan Galamian. I was concertmaster of the Vassar College Orchestra for 3 years and twice performed solos with the orchestra. I also performed solo recitals, and participated in a number of chamber groups as well as baroque, and contemporary music ... ensembles. Over the years, I have participated in a number of acclaimed chamber music programs and festivals, the IES Abroad Vienna Music Program, Killington Music Festival, Artaria Chamber Music School, Madeline Island Music Center, and Birch Creek Music Center. I also have a rich orchestral background, and in addition to the Vassar College Orchestra was concertmaster of the Eastern Music Festival Orchestra, the Minnesota Youth Symphonies, and a number of smaller orchestras. I currently teach violin lessons at the Brooklyn Waldorf School and in my own private studio. I am classically trained, but I also enjoy playing in other genres including bluegrass, folk, rock, and alternative, and am currently involved with a bluegrass band and indie-rock band in New York. These experiences profoundly shaped my approach to the violin and have made me a very versatile musician and teacher. I have been teaching violin lessons with enthusiasm and passion for 3 years and am personally invested in my students’ progress.

Lesson Details

Since college, I have taught beginner and intermediate students ages 6 to adult. I don’t have one single approach to teaching, but rather shape lessons to suit each student. I try to treat the lesson as a conversation—instead of me always telling you what to do, I want to work with you figure out creative solutions together. As a teacher, I am here to benefit you as a student, and will push you as far as you want me to. I am enthusiastic and try to explain concepts in ways that are ... easy to understand. I am also very patient and encouraging, and strive to make lessons both insightful and fun.

I am a strong proponent of technique, but one of my main objectives is to help students find their musicality. After all, music is more than just notes—it can be compelling and expressive, and it is extremely rewarding when a student can tap into their unique musical expression. I also incorporate Alexander Technique and relaxation into my lessons.
