Overview

Hi, and welcome to my profile! I am a Manhattan based, freelance classical violinist with a passion for teaching. A west coast transplant, I received my bachelor's degree in Violin Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where I was a student of Axel Strauss. Two years ago I moved out to New York to pursue my master's of music as a student of Hiroko Yajima at Mannes College, which I completed last May.
My classical foundation has given me opportunities to work with conductors like Michael Tilson Thomas, and to play with pop stars, like Sting. While I love classical music, I am also an avid fan of new music, hip hop, jazz, and crossover works.
I love to perform live, in classical orchestra or chamber settings, though I can frequently be found in the recording studio, laying down string tracks.

In my spare time, I like to read, write, and practice aerial arts!

*** Lesson Details ***
I have almost 8 years of teaching experience, with students of all ages and abilities. In my lessons, I focus on a balance of strong technique and theory, matched with individual musicality. My teaching style is structured, yet creative, adapting my teaching for each student. Each lesson blends all elements of violin playing, building on previous learning, and providing goals for the next lesson. I like to provide my students with skills and techniques that they can use in their own practice to help teach themselves, accelerating overall progress. Whatever your goals in music might be, I'd love to help you reach, and exceed them!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide no equipment. I expect the students to have their own instrument and stand.

*** Specialties ***
Classically trained. Some experience with Suzuki method, though not a strict Suzuki teacher.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Could not ask for more! Lara is a very personable and engaging instructor but always professional. We have had her instructing our daughter for over a year now. Lara has always been able identify and meet our daughter where ever she is. With a 5-6 year old child that is not an easy task to accomplish but she makes it look easy and natural! We are extremely happy with how our daughter is progressing with Lara. March 6, 2014

Rated 5 out of 5 by Great tutor! Lara is extremely competent, very helpful, and thoroughly understanding of my goals as a student. She is a perfectionist who is acutely aware of what good playing sounds like and how to achieve a flawless sound, yet she is never burdensome or overbearing in her corrections and comments. Hour-long lessons with Lara always fly by. I'd highly recommend her for a student of any skill level, from those who just started playing, like myself, to those who wish to perfect the art.
