    About Bryan G.

I am a senior at UCSD studying Electrical and Computer Engineering, with a depth in Machine Learning. I have one more quarter until graduation, and am currently in the process of interviewing for a software engineering position at Google. I've been teaching for most of my life. As far back as I can remember, I've always been helping my friends and classmates with homework, and teaching what I learn to whoever will listen. After high school, I spent 5 years in the military. I was trained as a radar technician, and I also spent 1 year teaching marksmanship. While in electronics and radar school, I finished each section at the top of my class, and received awards for acting as a peer tutor during that time. After finishing my military service in 2009, I started college full time. I also started taking private music lessons (guitar and voice). At various times in between terms at school and technical internships, I've tutored math and science, and even taught a few guitar lessons. While at UCSD, I also volunteered to organize and teach several workshops on how to build a distortion pedal (electric guitar effect) from basic electronic components. In all of my teaching experiences, from math and science to electronics, to marksmanship, to music, I've thoroughly enjoyed helping others grasp new material. I believe that teaching should be very interactive. When introducing new material, I like to move slowly at first to develop a thorough and intuitive understanding of concepts and ideas. The mechanics of solving problems becomes much easier to understand and remember after an intuition has been developed. This intuition also helps to verify that a solution makes sense. After a thorough understanding is in place, I like to help students develop their own memory aids so that material can be quickly recalled during tests. If a tutoring session is going well, you will not watch me do much math at all - I will be watching you solve problems, and providing guidance, support, and verification as necessary. This helps prevent the common phenomenon by which a student seems to understand material while it's being presented, but then struggles to solve problems independently. More than anything, I try to make the material interesting and fun, and to keep stress at a minimum. Subjects I tutor: High school level and below: all math, physics, and chemistry. College level math: -Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Pre-Calculus -Calculus I, II, III, Vector Calculus, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra -Discrete Math, Probability and Statistics College level science: -General Chemistry -Physics: Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism Electrical Engineering: -Digital and Analog Circuit Theory -Fourier Transforms, Time/Frequency Domain Analysis Computer Science: -Java, C Programming Languages -Algorithms and Data Structures I own textbooks for most of the math and science courses that I tutor, but it helps if the student brings his or her textbook, a syllabus, and any other relevant course material, as some classes and professors cover slightly different material, and textbooks may use different notation and conventions. I may be able to help with various other related subjects, so if you don't see your exact subject here, or have any questions before starting, just ask. I look forward to learning with you!
