I am a harpist at heart since the day I set my eyes on this angelic instrument at the age of 12. Every sound made is immediately comforting and soothing. My experience ranges from teaching children and adults of all backgrounds. I founded Harp4all Music Conservatory and have regular harp ensemble practices and recitals. I teach from several method books including Harp Olympics and Fun From the First. My teachers Pre collge harp at Jacob’s School of Music in Bloomington under direction of Susann McDonald, private study and masterclasses with Susann McDonald, Elizabeth Richter, Ellie Choate. Susann McDonald has strongly influenced my teaching style and performance.
My students progress quickly with a strong foundation of technique and note reading/theory. I encourage students to participate in orchestra, recitals, competitions, and other adjudications. I’m a member of the American Harp Society. Other influences in my teaching have been Mary Dropkin, the former harpist of Redlands University.

Hi! My name is Sara. My studio began in 2000, teaching one violin student here in Bloomington. After I moved to California I became a freelance harpist. I performed with many orchestras and performed at Capital Records for the Stan Lee Documentary “With Great Power, The Stan Lee Story”. I started my teaching studio in Riverside, California while still freelancing and earning my A.A. in Music and my Piano Performance Certificate from Riverside Community College in California. I graduated Great Distinction and was on the Dean's list. I received many piano and academic scholarships. While in college I started my studio in Riverside California teaching Piano to an autistic child. I taught him 3 times a week and made exceptional progress. I enjoyed it so much I started teaching full time in 2008 teaching piano, harp, violin, voice, guitar, flute and clarinet. Soon I had 50 students and created a 501 (c) (3) non-profit music school. My students and I perform for the public, including nursing homes. The performances are important for the students progress as well as the Piano Guild where students are adjudicated by judges in a non competitive environment. Moving back to my hometown I have met so many wonderful students! The move was a hard transition, but it introduced me to teaching online. I was sad to be leaving my students and I wanted to find a way to continue teaching them. It was alot more successful than I had thought it would be! My students have been successful and have been preparing for competitions and have completed many successful Piano Guild adjudications. I have traveled many times back to support them in their endeavors. Apart from my already established studio, I have met so many new students in remote areas who wouldn’t have access to a skilled music teacher if it wasn’t for online teaching. I am excited to meet more wonderful students!!

My daughter needed beginner lessons for learning the harp and worked with Lydia for several months. She was an incredibly wonderful woman and was extremely patient, offering guidance and providing feedback in order to better improve her work and technique. As a music teacher of over 15 years I take a fun but structured approach to learning the harp. I've taught all ages and I individually work with each student to help them learn the music that they want to and reach the goals that they set for themselves. I also have a large emphasis on hand position and help my students have the very best technique so they can play their very best. We will typically start with exercises and technique and then move to music. I will then send written individual feedback after the lesson to help remind the student of what we are working on. Although I graduated from Brigham Young University in Idaho with a Bachelors in visual communication, I have continued to stretch my skills as musician and teacher.

FAQs:

Do I need to have any musical experience to learn to play the Celtic harp?

It's not necessary to have any prior musical background before embarking on harp lessons. If you have never taken up an instrument before, Anne will teach you harp technique and how to read music, too. It's a plus if you have some past musical experience, because you'll already know the rudiments of reading sheet music. Anne teaches from ages 7 and up. If your child is younger than 7 and anxious to play the harp, get them started on the piano first. This way, when they come to Anne at an older age, they will already know how to read music (harp sheet music and piano sheet music look alike).

Is the harp difficult to learn?

It's no more difficult to learn than any other instrument. If you really want to learn and you practice, you'll learn quickly. It's all about motivation.

Do I need to own a harp to learn to play?

For online lessons, you'll need to have your own harp. You can also buy a harp from Anne, too! (Note: Anne only rents to students taking in-person lessons, but Anne is happy to help you find a rental in your area)

What does Anne teach?

Anne assesses your goals and your experience before designing a learning path that is right for you. For this reason, her lessons are always one-on-one and not taught in a group fashion. Of course, parents are welcome to sit in on their child's lesson. 

What is Anne's experience?

Anne studied music theory and received her formal music education at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). When the Celtic harp piqued her interest, she studied harp techniques from world-renowned harpist Sylvia Woods and later contributed to her book Music Theory & Arranging Techniques for Folk Harps. Anne also studied professional stage performance with Ed Hooks (San Francisco, CA) and at the Living History Centre (Novato, CA). Anne applied her formal training to teaching music for the Los Angeles Unified School District. She continues to work with students presenting educational demonstrations for school assemblies. Anne has given workshops to students in the Sacramento Waldorf School, El Dorado Union School District, Merced Union High School District, and Minden Elementary School. She has taught harp since 1987, offering educational demonstrations, focused workshops, and taking on private students. She performed on the 2015 GRAMMY® Award Winning Best New Age Album, "Winds of Samsara".

I am learning a lot from Tim, he's a great teacher and player and I have already improved my playing after just a few lessons and started developing some better habits on the harp!

On my lesson today, we discussed using a volume adapter for a voice microphone.  It plugs into the microphone and then the XLR cable plugs into the adapter.  This allow you to sing and then reduce the volume and hold the diatonic harp right against the microphone and use your hands to control the sound.  You need to remember to turn the volume up after your solo, so some practice is needed.  This works like a typical harp microphone and you don't need to change the volume on the PA. I’ve been playing piano for over 10years and have precipitated in many graded performances. I was classically trained through the Suzuki method.  I’ve also been paying and performing on harp for 5+ years. I’ve recently been performing at wedding and other special events on harp and have love every second of it! Ginger is a prolific harpist currently based in Los Angeles. From classically trained harpist to rocking out on stage with grammy winner Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers, Ginger Rose has been performing for years throughout California. She has also been featured in an MTV interview on the importance of music in schools where she advocates for increasing funding for music programs in public school institutions. During her undergraduate journey at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Ginger performed with conductors such as Edwin Outwater, Michael Morgan, and Earl Lee, as well as played alongside the SF Philharmonic in their Spring 2022 season. While she loves performing and collaborating in live settings, Ginger Rose can also be heard behind the scenes as the harpist for the new Aperture Job Desk video game released in March 2022 by Valve. Ginger is currently studying for her Master’s at the University California of Los Angeles under the wing of Lou Anne Neil, former principal harpist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Hello!  I started my harp teaching life as a research doctor and therapist, using harp vibrations with patients for 9 years in Mayo Clinic hospitals.  I recorded my main album, Harp Of Hope,  as a harp therapy treatment to help people with anxiety and other symptoms.   I began to meet many people who wanted to learn harp for healing their own symptoms.   So I began to teach harp, specializing in adult beginners. 

 I am a Conservatory-trained harpist and pianist, so I emphasize good technique, but I want my students to enjoy life.  So I try to fill lesson times with peace, laughter, and joy in the music.  That's what it's all about!  

 I live on a beautiful lake in Northern Kentucky, near Cincinnati, Ohio.  I teach there, and I sometimes gather my local students at the lake for an informal "harp retreat", including food, fun conversation, and lots of playing together!   Most of my students are adults who have always wanted to play the harp but never knew a teacher, or had the time, until now... so, if that's you, too,  I look forward to meeting you!

Music gives me so much joy in life, that I simply love teaching it to others!  I especially want prospective students to know that I specialize in ADULT beginners--because they know how to focus, and they have such appreciation for the joy that music brings!

By age 9, I was a piano student who, at age 12, went to the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati with plans of becoming a concert pianist.  I won a major piano competition at 15; but by 19, an injury to my hand changed my plans, and later led me very unexpectedly into a different career--law school!  

After finding a wonderful harp teacher, Joan Ceo, at the University of Kentucky, I discovered a whole new world of beautiful music... that also calmed and nourished my heart and soul.  Later, while living and training post-grad in Canada, I worked in churches and hospitals as a theologian and chaplain, learning the amazing effects harp can have.  I moved to Minnesota and began my own harp studio in 2000, doing concerts, and creating a wonderful harp circle that is still performing together.  The Mayo Clinic there hired me after I pioneered a harp therapy method that had great results with lowering blood pressure, stabilizing heart arrhythmias, calming anxiety, and bringing peace to painful situations.  I recorded Harp Of Hope and other therapeutic harp CD's during that time, which Mayo Clinic patients still use.

In 2004, I moved to St. Augustine, FL to work at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville.  But I still tour there to do concerts and teach from my part-time home near the beach (which is also a vacation rental that students enjoy!).   I came back to Northern Kentucky in 2010 to be closer to my family (YES, I have moved a lot!), I created a therapeutic harp program in the Dept. of Psychiatry at a major Cincinnati hospital.  This year, I was very excited to begin teaching both harp and piano online, because I can reach so many more students this way.  It is wonderful to bring people from all corners of the world together through music!

I have done lessons with other harp teachers over the past three years, but Bethany has really helped me see my areas of weakness, and helped me improved on those areas. I play the harp much better now, utilizing proper finger placement with notes and chords etc. I have grown to have a better appreciation for the instrument now

My goal for each lesson is to equip students with the skills they need to confidently and joyfully play the harp. For all skill levels, I integrate aural training and theory into lessons so that the student gains mastery over all aspects of music. My background in piano, lever harp, and pedal harp means that I have multiple tools for teaching, including both prominent harp methods - French and Salzedo - as well as experience with ABRSM, the British music education system. I teach and perform a wide range of genres, so I'm ready to help students play the style of music they're most interested in.

I am passionate about creating beautiful music. While Classical music is my favorite genre to perform, I also regularly play harp in contemporary band settings where I improvise my part based off of chord charts. I've played everything from Jazz to Country music. 

I've earned my Licentiate in Performance through the United Kingdom’s Royal School of Music and my Bachelor of Arts in Music with highest honors from Union University. Then, I attended the University of Michigan on a full tuition scholarship and graduated with my Master of Music in Harp Performance with highest honors in 2019.

The harp is highly adaptable and excels as a solo and collaborative instrument. I love introducing people to the harp's many charms and helping them discover their connection to it.

On the rare occasions when I'm not playing harp, I can be found gardening with my husband, reading with my cat Eggplant, or baking up a storm.
