Where to see live music in Chicago
By John W. - Chicago Guitar Teacher
I live and teach guitar lessons in one of America’s major cities, Chicago. Chicago is diverse and rich with musical heritage. Chicago has a wide variety of options for attending live music events. However, my experience as a musician and guitar teacher tells me that Chicago’s music scene is also segmented. There are many pockets of small scenes that are largely unrelated to each other, and can often be difficult to navigate between. Therefore, in this article I have provided some basic information on what these scenes are, where they are located and where you, as a live music fan, can go to access specific and updated information about them.
Fortunately for the musician/music fan living in Chicago, there are ample resources available which provide information about local music. To begin with, local papers and pamphlets such as The Reader, Metromix Chicago, and The Redeye are released weekly and provide updates and descriptions of almost every live music event happening in the city. Aside from being available online, these papers are available at almost every supermarket, coffee shop, sandwich shop, etc. in the city. As a connoisseur of live music and guitar teacher in Chicago these places should be your major references for music events and discovering the local beat.
The summer is a very exciting time for music in Chicago. To begin with, there are several major music festivals hosted in and around Chicago during the warm months of the year. These include Lollapalooza, North Coast Music Festival, Pitchfork Music Festival, and Country Thunder. These festivals typically specialize in a specific genre of music, and last for an entire weekend. They either charge by the day or for the full weekend.
Every weekend during the summer there are street festivals and events that host live music all over the city. Most festivals are either free or extremely affordable ($15 or less), and almost always host live music. The two most notable of these are Chicago Blues Fest and the Taste of Chicago – both of which take place in Grant Park.
There are many great music options for music fans in Chicago that feature all types of music, which is great for students looking to take music lessons in Chicago.
