Hi there! I’m Joshua B. and I teach guitar here in the "Mile High City" of Denver, CO. Being nestled next to the gorgeous Rocky Mountains sets the perfect mood for the vibrant music happening around us here in Denver, and the sound of jazz just seems to be everywhere.
If you’re interested in taking guitar lessons in Denver then you’re in the right spot! We are fortunate to have a thriving jazz music scene that has been serenading this city for many years. Clubs like Dazzle Jazz Lounge, El Chapultepec, and several others deliver top notch music performances, mixing new talent with seasoned jazz veterans.
Denver’s jazz music scene is so alive and prominent that we have listener-supported public jazz radio at 89.3 KUVO. They have provided a thoughtful, handpicked soundtrack to this great city for over 30 years. Listeners of the station will find KUVO playing just about every type of jazz imaginable, with an emphasis on the history that goes alongside the music. It’s a great station to listen to if you want to get inspired!
For those looking for that classic small room underground jazz club feel, you may find yourself at home on Monday nights at The Meadowlark. The music starts picking up around 10 p.m., and the talent is incredible. People will roll in all night off the street with horns, unique voices, dancing, and hands for rhythm instruments. The crowd is beautifully mixed, and the vibe is right.
For those in the mood for other genres of music, many popular touring acts in rock and alternative music pass through clubs like The Bluebird, Fillmore Auditorium, and Summit Music Hall. It is common to see big name guitarists pass through these venues, and people will line up down the block to see the bands they love.
Looking for an open mic jam sort of night? Try out Armoury downtown on Larimer St. every Wednesday around 9 p.m. for their funk jam. The owners running the place are very nice, and they have a great little pub atmosphere. Amps, mics, and drums are provided for those looking to get down. Just bring your guitar to sit in with the band. The best part? Entrance is free!
Of course never to be forgotten is the amazing Red Rocks Amphitheater. It’s safe to say that nearly every significant guitarist has played Red Rocks at some point in their career, and maybe even more than once. It’s truly a place for all different varieties of music and performances. A naturally formed amphitheater in the foothills of the amazing rocky mountains, Red Rocks has a sound quality that is unmatched by any other venue.
Denver also has great local resources for musical instrument repair and sales. I typically take my guitars to Colfax Guitar Shop whenever I need any set-ups, adjustments, or custom work done. The owner Dave runs a quality establishment, and he seems to love what he does.
Rockley Music is also a great resource in town, dealing many different musical instruments with a nice emphasis on quality pianos. They also have a decent size room for guitars, and the staff has been patient and friendly. It’s always a plus to have a local shop where you can find quality instruments of all kinds.
Denver is a great place to live if you are a guitarist, or musician of any kind for that matter. Many opportunities are around us in this modestly-musical city of Denver, and it’s been exciting to see even more music coming here over the past couple of years. So what are you waiting for?
