MUSIC (see fitness below): Shannon has numerous years of experience teaching all skill levels on woodwinds, and beginning-intermediate piano & classical strings, using various approaches to best suit the student's learning style, personality, and needs.

Shannon is an active musician who has been featured as a soloist and in the flute and woodwind sections with various orchestras, chamber ensembles, opera orchestras, and musical theatre within the United States, Italy, and Mexico.  She is presently the founder, CEO, and Principal Flute of the Texas Chamber Symphony, Director of the Da Capo Chamber Ensembles, and is a substitute musician with the Orquesta Sinfnica de Monterrey, Symphony of Southeast Texas, and Opera in the Heights. 

Shannon has been a faculty member at various colleges and is currently an Applied Instructor of Music at Jessup University and a retired Adjunct Professor of Music at Brazosport College; and also has an active private studio, Leigh Studios.  She has served the College Music Society South-Central as Regional President, vice-president, and newsletter editor; and is an Advisory Board member for the Houston Flute Club after retiring as president and other positions. And she was also the newsletter editor for the Upper Mid-west flute associate and a board member of other organizations.
 
Shannon received her Master of Music degree in Performance from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. She also studied at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and received her B.A. degree in Performance and B.S. degree in Music-Business from Winona State University, and has studied with world-renowned instructors.

Shannon has received grants for her work from the Minnesota State Arts Board,  American Federation of Musicians,  Rome Festival Orchestra, and the Winona Music Guild,  and was the 1997 recipient of the Vivian Menees Nelson Music Award.

I am pretty easygoing. I want you to feel comfortable and at ease, but we do need to focus and can have fun doing it. :)
I utilize various methods for each instrument, which is determined by the student's learning style, ability, and needs, so this can change as time goes on (not sticking to one particular publisher's materials). I have done (and continue to do) extensive research into materials available for each instrument I teach and supplement with my own to utilize the best out there for "YOU" for the best possible progress. While ensuring an extremely well-rounded musical education, so you can progress at the best possible rate. Since each student's potential is different, each will progress differently. This is also determined by your dedication to daily practice (the more you practice, the quicker you will progress & the more accomplished you will become). This is a 'Team Effort'; I give the guidance and tools. You practice, utilize, and learn these tools, and off we go! The sky is the limit!

When you study oboe with me, you receive informative and fun lessons where we can discuss a wide range of topics from band music, fundamentals, audition techniques, breathing exercises, college applications, stage fright, movie music, and so much more! Each student of mine has a different path and different interests so I adapt my lessons to fit their needs. 

What we study together: My preferred book for beginners is the Rubank book (Elementary for less than 3 years of playing or Intermediate for 3 to 5 years of playing). For students playing more than 5 years or high schoolers, I suggest the Barret Oboe Method book. I also have experience with a wide range of other books such as Essential Elements and Standard of Excellence. 

Music from Pop Culture: I also love playing music from movies and TV shows! Many of my beginner students love playing Jurassic Park, Game of Thrones, or Pirates of the Caribbean. Not every lesson has to be strict! :)

I like to begin with the Essential Elements series.  I have had a lot of success with my beginners in this series.  I also encourage my oboists to bring and play with a tuner.  Having a great ear for pitch is absolutely necessary for playing the oboe.

For beginning piano students at the pre-reading level (ages 3-6ish) I like to use the Faber "My First Piano Adventure" series. I love that this series enforces solid technique in a fun, child-friendly way.

For older beginners and players with some piano I like the Alfred series, supplemented, of course, with songs/styles of music that interest the student.

Guitar: I've found that guitar method books are nearly as diverse as the guitarists that play them!  That being said, I typically start with the Essential Elements for guitar for a solid introduction to music reading and a touch of theory.

Depending on the style of play the guitarist is interested in I move on from there.  Mel Bays Classical method is always a solid choice as is the Christopher Parkening Guitar method.  I also have a few tab oriented books and some rock/blues oriented books.

For clarinet and oboe students I like to compliment what their band/orchestra director is using when possible.  I also love the Klose method for clarinet.  The Rubank is also a tried and true book I use.  I've had a lot of success with these books.

Of course the best method books are for naught without adequate practice time!  When theory and technique work get too dry it's always fun to throw in some fun selections to compliment the "work."

Voice students are a bit different in that I don't use a specific method to instruct.  I have many books that I draw from when teaching voice due to the unique nature of the individual.  Depending on the style of music, from classical to jazz/pop, I have music that will teach proper breath support, vowel placement and tone.
