Creative Music and Drumming in San Diego

It is Saturday, June 11, 2011 in sunny San Diego. The time is 4pm as I pack up my drums for an evening gig. While I have packed up my drums for gigs at least a hundred times by now, this time is a bit more special. I will be playing music that I consider to be fun and creative. I will be performing with my trio, Ensemble Off n On, at the San Diego Center for the Arts. Opening for my trio will be a talented group of high school students from Canyon Crest Academy featuring David James on drums, who was selected out of a national talent search for young musicians who played at the recent Grammy Awards.
I teach drum lessons in San Diego and I am also co-director of San Diego Center for the Arts, an organization that has been producing creative music concerts for the last few years. Some of the percussionists that this series has featured are: Le Quan Ninh, (percussionist from Vietnam) Nathan Hubbard, (percussionist and composer) and David Johnson (professor of percussion at California Institute of the Arts). This concert series has also featured such renowned musicians as: guitarist - Peter Sprague, jazz vocalist – Leonard Patton, bassist – Jeremy Kurtz and mandolinist – Chris Acquavella. San Diego Center for the Arts is currently arranging a concert that will feature, legendary guitarist, Mandell Lowe, who played guitar, for the great jazz alto saxophonist, Charlie Parker.
