James T.

Lancaster, PA

About James

I graduated with a B.A. in Professional Music from Boston's Berklee College of Music. When I first heard about Berklee, I too thought of warm and sunny Berkeley California and not the frigid winters in Boston. Berklee however, is respected world-wide as the musicians music college. Each year, only 3% of students are able to graduate. Advanced freshman placement accelerated all Berklee core requirements by my sophomore year. An early focus on their Advanced Harmony/Theory and Ear Training electives provided the rare opportunity of experiencing Berklee's highest level courses in both departments
. I graduated with Honors in 7 semesters with a cumulative music GPA of 3.6. (Magna Cum Laude). Since graduation, I've been a full-time independent professional musician with over 28 years of experience in all facets of music. Teaching private piano, guitar, and bass students however, is my first love and I consider my biggest accomplishment to be the accomplishments of my students. Since Berklee, I've amassed an extensive teaching library from over 5,000 original lesson plans tailored to meet the needs of students of all ages, levels, and musical interests. Acquiring and maintaining private students for over 28 years has been based solely through word-of-mouth referrals from students, parents, and teachers. A high percentage of students perform in bands, record professionally, and teach independently or in schools. Many letters of recommendation have provided college entry and 6 of 8 recommendations to attend Berkee have since graduated. Teaching beginning music students at any age is most important to me however. So many students never get the opportunity to ever realize their potential as was the case with me. From age 12 to 23, I was frustrated as I was only ever taught how to read music. Reading is important, but there's more to what we hear that meets the eye (pun intended I guess). I believe this is one of the reasons most people say, "If only I had stuck with lessons". Every student entering Berklee is told to forget everything they've ever learned up until now. Professional Performance: I've demonstrated over 28 years of professional diversity with a variety of genres (i.e. jazz, rock, blues, classical, etc.) facilitated through an equal proficiency with piano, guitar, and bass. Versatility has helped to provide over 9,000 solo, band, and free-lance performances at over 2,000 different venues. I've performed bass and keyboard duties simultaneously via split keyboard in original trio for over 15 years with world-respected drummer Clyde Lucas (Count Basie, Ray Charles, etc.). While attending college, I performed in Boston jazz clubs with prominent Berklee students including Smitty Smith from Jay Leno's Tonight Show Band. Other notable bands include Robert Gordan, Eddie Holman (Hey There Lonely Girl), Cab Calloway, and The Moody Blues. Long list includes prominent politicians and various jazz festivals. Recording/Composition: I've recorded 200+ original compositions and 50+ student play-a-long C.D.'s from my elaborate home studio. Advanced recording techniques implementing analog, MIDI, digital and synchronization formats has provided vast experience in both the professional and home studio. Multiple clients have hired me to transcribe, arrange, and record all instrumental parts for a variety of diverse artists and professional recording studio projects including jingles, commercials, and film.

*** Lesson Details ***
All students are provided a safe environment in my townhouse of 20 years located in a nice suburban townhouse development minutes from the intersection of Rt. 30 and Rt. 23 (New Holland Ave.). My 3rd floor teaching studio provides all instruments and students have the option to bring their guitar or bass to each lesson or simply use one of mine. Parents can either choose to observe the lesson, relax in my living room, or shop at the Lancaster Shopping Center 2 minutes from my house. Jim has an incredible wealth of knowledge and skills to share with students of all backgrounds, so please get in touch with us to set something up. Our rates are reasonable for the kind of expertise that Jim is available to provide.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Full 3rd floor dedicated for teaching: waiting area for parents on the 1st floor or they can come up to the 3rd floor.

*** Specialties ***
Berklee's highest freshman placement allowed me to accelerate focus through all advanced theory and ear training electives providing rare completion of highest available level course in both departments. Utilize that with equal interest and experience in all styles and genres (jazz, rock, blues, classical,etc.). Equal proficiency with piano, guitar, and bass.

Jim Rocks! I love hanging out every Sunday jamming

I have dabbled with the guitar for a couple of years but never got serious about. This year I made a new years resolution to get serious about it and find a guitar instructor.

I am so happy that I found Jim. He is brilliant with music and is that laid back, rad teacher that you hope to have for guitar.

We are about 5 weeks into lessons and I'm already playing Dead or Alive, Blackbird, Polly, and learning new songs every week. I thought we would be doing "boring" exercises still but he is great at teaching you the basics while keeping it fun.

A+ for Jim. Also, he is extremely flexible.

The only downside is that I wanted him to teach me how to sing Blackbird, but that's not his cup of tea. haha

Lindsey R.

Hanover, PA

About Lindsey

***CURRENT TIME SLOT AVAILABILITY: 4:00 and 8:30 ONLY

If you need another time slot, please send me a message first and I can let you know if I expect any openings in the near future.***

Join me for piano lessons in my home on Fridays on a baby grand piano! There is seating inside and outside, and there is plenty of on-street parking. There are also four friendly cats who enjoy listening during lessons!

What you will need:

An instrument to practice on - either an acoustic piano or a keyboard with weighted keys at home. **Please do not schedule lessons unless you have an instr
ument.**

Sheet music - students can purchase it through me or from a store or online. We can talk about what kinds of music you like to play or want to learn to play once you sign up for lessons.

Usually for either a beginner adult or child, I recommend the Alfred piano series, along with a technique book to strengthen the fingers, and a fun piece ... something the student specifically wants to learn or be challenged with.

FAQs:

How often are lessons?
Once a week for half an hour is ideal, especially for beginners. Please book lessons on a "recurring schedule," not "pay as you go," which, the way the system is set up, will not reserve your time slot.

How often will I have to practice?
For 6 and 7 year olds, generally 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week. For everyone else, at least a half an hour a day will give you the most progress!

What do you specialize in?
My strongest abilities are in classical music, because that is what I have the most experience in, but I can also teach the fundamentals of playing pop and rock music, and good performance, accompaniment, and practice habits.

What happens if I can't come to my scheduled lesson?
Email me, text me, call me and we can see if another time will work. Keep in mind that I only teach on Fridays and your time slot is reserved for just for you. It may be difficult to find another opening, so plan on attending! Missed lessons will still be charged regardless of whether you can make it or not, so it's best to be there!
The cost of lessons not only reserves your spot, but allows me to maintain an effective studio, which includes planning lessons for each individual student, finding and planning music, maintenance of my piano, costs for recitals, and costs of association memberships. Regular attendance is in everyone's best interest :)

What happens if I need to discontinue lessons but already paid for the lessons?
Contact TakeLessons and they will handle that for you.

I am happy to share my experience as a very satisfied piano student of Lindsey's! She is so patient and helpful while I'm learning. With her level of skill, she is teaching me more than just notes, like my form, timing and so much more. She uses a variety of music which keeps me interested and challenged. I highly recommend Lindsey as a teacher to both young, not so young, beginner or some skill as she will make all ages and levels feel at ease while they will truly be taught to play the piano! An awesome teacher!

He is a great teacher! He balances technique with expression in his teaching, from learning scales to performing pieces. He made it challenging, but fun. He taught me and all my siblings as well and they have all grown to appreciate music and gained skills that they use in other areas of music and learning.

Having worked with Nikita and knowing him personally, I hold him in very high regards. Not only Nikita is an outstanding performer and musician, but he also is a very strong teacher, who holds high level of professionalism. Nikita finds individual approach to each one of his students, helps them find passion for music within themselves and express it in their performance, all of which are key pedagogical qualities. Having music as an essence of his life, Nikita naturally sparks love for music in other people. Nikita gave me many helpful tips on how to become a better performer, as well as how to have the confidence to be one. But above all, Nikita has a very bright personality, a very lighthearted sense of humor and a natural ability drive people towards him. Nikita is a very inspiring young man.

Dora is a WONDERFUL teacher for anyone of any age seeking to learn and play piano!!! My nine year old daughter and I both started lessons with Dora almost a year ago and she works with us both so well. With great patience and persistence. She takes the time to get to know you and knows when to push you. She is really thorough; Dora has had us learning music theory since the beginning. Additionally she does not allow us to form bad habits; Dora insists on correct seat height, posture, the way to hold your shoulders, arms hands, fingers. No correct notes played with incorrect fingers permitted! Dora is a performing musician and often when we are arriving at her cozy home based studio we are treated to the soaring sounds of her playing the glossy Yamaha grand piano we play (someday we hope to make it sound even half as beautiful!) She is usually rehearsing for a show. Speaking of shows Flora had had my daughter perform with her other students onstage twice and me once. She offers her students opportunities for learning at other places as well. A solid education in the mechanics of playing and musical expression on the piano, music theory and performance is what you will receive with our dear Dora Zlatkin, who I am proud to call not only my teacher, but my friend too. She is the best!
