I focus on music reading, but also stress ear training as well as incorporate music theory into every level of teaching. I do require students to participate in at least one public performance or studio recital each year. Please see specifics for each instrument below: Each student should provide their own instrument (exception, piano). Flute (beginning to advanced/professional) - stress music notation/rhythm and sight-reading (my favorite part of the lesson!) - sheet music will need to be purchased upon discretion of the parent and teacher, depending on their level. I will give music copies until the proper level is established. - scales and etudes will use approximately 1/4 of the lesson time. - solo repertoire (pieces) will be decided upon during the lessons. You should expect to be playing your instrument noticeably better within the first two lessons, and potentially even an entire level higher within the first six months of study. Piano (provided on premises) - note recognition/music reading/rhythm and chord study are focused on during the lessons, as well as playing by ear - I use the Alfred piano methods as well as selections from the Bastien piano methods, and selected solo material - students will study Hanon piano exercises as well as chord progressions A piano student will be able to sit a piano and play several tunes for performance or just fun confidently after studying for six months. Music Theory A student studying music theory will gain a basic knowledge and ability to understand and play chord and scale structures on the piano as well as gain understanding of rhythm and harmonic structure. Weekly worksheets and exercises completed by the student will determine the level of their progress. After studying for 6 months, a music theory student will gain concepts through the first semester of college music theory, depending on the age and focus level of the student. Guitar, Mandolin - understanding of TAB notation - reading standard music notation - become self-sufficient in tuning and maintenance of your own instrument - students will study both fingerstyle(PIMA) and strumming techniques - various methods used: internet, Hal Leonard Mandolin Method, Mel Bay Guitar Series, as well as particular songs of student interest - bar (barre) chords and transposition studied - guitar blues, riffs, and scales - mandolin bluegrass techniques After studying for 6 months, a student will have basic melody and chord production knowledge, enough to play several tunes on their own. Clarinet, Saxophone - basic understanding of fingerings/keys - scales and sight-reading - embouchure and sound production (long tone/vibrato studies) - ensemble and solo repertoire work through the intermediate range After studying for 6 months, a student will have a good knowledge of scales and fingerings as well as alternate fingerings, depending on the level of practice and student study. Voice - expanding the vocal range - tone and air control - vocalises studied during the lesson as well as solo repertoire A student will notice drastic difference in confidence and vocal control as well as range expansion after studying for 6 months. *** Studio Equipment *** church: school piano seating for parents home: separate room w/ piano seating for parents *** Specialties *** With an emphasis in flute, I am a well-rounded and experienced music teacher in middle Tennessee.
