Amy R.

Stone Ridge, NY

I will tailor your lessons to be what you want them to be. They can be fun and laid-back, focused and highly structured, or a little bit of both. My teaching methods include emphasis on scales, arpeggios, and exercises to build proper technique. I then bring this technique to the study of songs in a genre of your choice (pop, rock, jazz, classical, or anything else). If you are a parent looking for lessons for a very young beginner, I will provide lessons that are light and fun, so that your child will stay engaged, and most importantly, get excited about music!

About Amy

I have been studying voice, guitar, and piano since age 12 and received my B.A. in Music from Skidmore College. I am an active professional singer-songwriter, guitarist and pianist. My music has been featured by Rolling Stone, SPIN, and USA Today, and I have performed at major venues across the country, including Joe's Pub (NYC), and The Hotel Cafe (LA). I am infinitely passionate about sharing my life's love with young and beginning musicians. Looking forward to meeting you!

I would recommend without hesitation

Amy is probably one of the best guitar teachers i could ask for. Smart, well-trained and just a pleasure to be around. The fact that she's super talented is really just a bonus. I would recommend with confidence and without hesitation.

Excellent with children

Amy teaches my 5 and 6 year old daughters the piano. She is terrific, keeps their attention, teaches them how to play songs they love (such as the theme from the movie Brave) and they are really learning. They can read music and play songs all on their own. They have grown to love music because of Amy. Amy is also talented in voice and guitar (along with other instruments) and at times, she will incorporate this into her lessons to change it up a bit. You would be lucky to have Amy as your instructor!

Michael H.

Kingston, NY

Having spent years moving forward in the music industry with Breakfast in Fur and being hired for everything from Punk to Gospel, I see no boundaries in music. Through my lessons, all of my students have gained proficiency, while having FUN learning about music. My lessons are structured to give my students a foundation of Music Theory through teaching the student what he/she wants to learn. I largely work from my own materials, but also teach using Hal Leonard and Mel Bay's Guitar books.

About Michael

Since earning his Bachelor's Degree in Jazz Guitar Performance from SUNY New Paltz, Michael Hollis has been teaching both privately and in studios throughout the Hudson Valley. Michael is the founder of the Hudson Valley Music Collective of private instructors that is set to debut later this year, bringing together a wonderful mix of musicians. What separates Michael from all of the other guitar instructors? Its his willingness to teach any genre or skill level and his myriad of performing experiences that help add a "real life" factor to his approach.
Music is all about FUN! If you're not h
aving fun, you're doing it wrong! Its for this reason that Michael shapes each individuals lessons to best meet their needs and desires.

I took mandolin lessons from Michael. He also taught me a lot of music theory and also how to improvise. I really enjoyed my lessons, because I was able to tell Michael what I was interested in learning, and that was what we focused on. He is himself a very talented musician and his teaching style is easy to understand. As an adult student, all of these aspects of teaching are very important.

Brett M.

Wappingers Falls, NY

Comprehensive, professional, and fun lessons from a pro guitarist. Learn how to play faster, more cleanly, more powerfully, and more confidently. Understand rhythm reading and notation, so that you can learn songs quickly and easily. Build and play chords all over the neck, not just memorize them from a book. Use scales, modes, and arpeggios to improvise, jam, and write your own songs. Apply music theory to the guitar (in a clear and step-by-step fashion) to unlock your potential.

I've been a bass player for many many years and starting focusing on guitar a few years ago. I had a good theoretical background but lacked the knowledge and technique to apply it to the guitar.
Brett was able to teach me all the guitar specific techniques and take my playing to the next level by showing me how to apply my theory knowledge to the fretboard.

I have now been taking lessons for a year and a half and have yet to have one I did not greatly benefit from!

Music Theory · In studio
I've been taking lessons with Brett for over a year now and it's been a fantastic experience. My journey started, however, long before our first meeting.
Over two years ago I decided it was time to up my game and increase my understanding of music theory and music in general. In order to accomplish this I felt I needed a teacher, but not just any teacher. I had a few strict requirements in mind. First, I wanted someone who had a degree in music. Brett's a graduate of Berklee College of Music. Check. As a bass player I wanted a guitarist for a teacher. To me, being able to ask questions and talk to someone who understands the interaction between bass and guitar is key. Brett's a pro guitarist and an accomplished musician. Check again. I also wanted someone who understood the music I listened to and played and was also versed in other styles of music. Again, check.
Brett met and surpassed everything I wanted in a teacher. And to top if off, he's one cool dude. My only regret is not starting sooner.
Great teacher with abundance of knowledge about music theory. He presents himself in a very professional manner and his teaching skills are impeccable. It appears that Brett can teach any level of guitar with ease. I have been taking lesson for approximately 3 months and am learning at a pace that makes me want to join a band.
