Fabio T.

Springfield, VA

About Fabio

Fabio is an accomplished and experienced musician. Beginning with percussion at the age of 9, he has over 15 years rocking out behind the kit. He has played in many local bands and as well as some internationally. He is sought after for his wide variety of styles: Classic rock, Modern Rock, Alternative, Punk, Metal, Blues, Funk, and Latin. He is currently working on a Hard Rock project whom are finishing up some demos before they start gigging around the area.
Aside from drumming, Fabio has also been trained in classical and electric guitar, as well as Music theory, which he acquired whil
e obtaining a BS Mechanical Eng/ and Acoustics.

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe it is important for a student to feel he/she is in a comfortable environment, which is why I tailor each lesson based on the student. I take into account not only natural talent and level of experience, but also progression and devotion. Whether the student is an adult looking to start a new and fun hobby, or a child with major aspirations to be come one of the greats, I can make sure either one gets the necessary instruction at a comfortable pace. Se Habla Español!

For beginning drummers, I like to start with fundamentals and light theory, and certain physical exercises (which help make the limbs independent of each other). I also like to get the student to familiarize themselves with the instrument. I start of with easy rhythms on a drum pad (usually from a beginners percussion book), and slowly work up to working with a high-hat, snare, bass drum configuration. Once you're ready for the fun stuff, we can start incorporating easy songs you've always wanted to play, and then start moving the difficulty level up and up. All in all I try to combine the fun that comes with playing along to the songs you love, with a strong foundation of fundamentals and theory which will help you progress faster but with ease. For students that have already had some experience either percussive or behind the kit, we can assess your level of experience and move from there.

For beginning guitarist, I begin by familiarizing the student with the instrument, and some very basic theory and tuning. We then move on to simple patterns to get those calluses on those finger tips. Then we start with chord charts and strumming rhythms. Followed by the fun stuff, which is actually playing a song. I am very open to my student's tastes and encourage them to bring in songs they would like to learn, because I when someone is familiar with a particular song, it can be almost as if your fingers naturally know what to do. I can teach both electric, classical acoustic, and steel acoustic guitars. For students who are further along, I like to assess their particular level first, and go on from there.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Drums: I provide a full kit, with necessary extras to for accompaniment. A stereo for playback, some recording equipment if needed. Books and necessary copies, although I encourage students to purchase their own instruction books. practice pad and extra sticks, music stand
Guitar: Amps, pics, stereo for playback, recording equipment, mics for non electric/acoustics, music stand.

Fabio is very knowledgable about the guitar (and other instruments) but what is most important to us is his gentle spirit and consistent patient instruction. As the grandparent of a high spirited and sometimes difficult to teach 7 year old boy, I really appreciate Fabio's ability to stay on task and encourage while teaching. He also tailors the lessons so that what is most important to the student is what he teaches so that we are having much more success with practicing and improvement that we did with previous teachers. I recommend him to anyone who is looking for a guitar teacher!!

Yana H.

Annandale, VA

About Yana

My teaching experience includes students between the ages of 8 and 70. I believe in the individual approach and decide what music books and methods to use and recommend after the first few lessons with the student. Everyone learns differently!
Flute lessons can be fun, educational and helpfull. Playing the flute is a great skill that lets you appreciate and express music. It also enhances your capability to focus and the quickness of your mind since you think of a few different things simultaneously when playing the instrument. And the fun part - well you can play your favorite song, compose
something yourself or have fun playing duets with me or fellow flute students.

Joshua B.

Fairfax, VA

About Joshua

Joshua began his teaching career as a graduate teaching assistant (TA) while pursuing his Master's degree at Florida State University. As a TA he taught voice lessons to undergraduate students, preparing them for auditions, recitals, and end of the term juries. Since graduating from FSU, Joshua has maintained a dynamic private vocal studio. Offering lessons to students from diverse backgrounds and varying levels of experience, utilizing a very personal approach to each student, tailoring lessons to meet each individuals needs. Under the belief that a solid vocal technique is the key to great s
inging, he begins from the ground up, addressing each aspect of singing, including the alignment of the body while singing, the inhale of the breath, the management of the breath while singing, and the physical action of singing.

Joshua's students come from all walks of life, and with his guidance, many have achieved new personal heights. Current and former students have done things such as: recording albums with their band; record solo albums; successfully audition for premier choirs; get booked as a solo entertainer; be cast as a lead in a musical; appear on national television; receive highest ratings on end-of-semester evaluations; and excel with their karaoke league!

Joshua is also an active performer. With a repertoire that spans opera, oratorio, song, and even straight-plays, Mr. B. is a versatile and intriguing artist. He has performed a variety of well-known operatic roles, such as Rodolfo, in Puccini’s La Boheme, Borsa in Verdi’s Rigoletto, and Lensky in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. Recently he appeared as the young tenor Tony Candolino, with Lyric Opera Virginia, in their production of Terrance McNally’s tony-winning play Masterclass. Other notable operatic roles are Nemorino in L'elisir d'amore, Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, Ferrando in Cosi Fan Tutte, and Camille de Rossilon in The Merry Widow. Joshua also enjoys exploring more obscure, contemporary works as well, such as Adam in Soluri’s Adam and Eve, The Celebrant in Mark Adamo’s Avow, and The Englishman in Jacques Ibert's Angelique. Mr. B. has also had the great honor of performing several scenes as Lenny in Carlisle Floyd's Of Mice and Men (an opera based on the popular novel by John Steinbeck) at a benefit for the composer himself.

Joshua also enjoys an active career as a concert soloist, appearing in such works as The Messiah, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, and Haydn’s Harmoniemesse. Recently he has appeared as a soloist in Mozart’s Requiem and Coronation Mass, as well as Carl Orff’s pivotal Carmina Burana. Joshua also had the privilege of joining the Cathedral Choral Society as the tenor soloist in last year’s performance of Rachmaninov’s Vespers, for special guests, their Excellencies, the ambassadors of Russia and Ukraine. In May, Joshua will once again join the Cathedral Choral Society as the tenor soloist in their performances of Mozart’s Davide Penitente, and Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass.

Recently Joshua won second prize at The Partners for the Arts inaugural vocal competition. Joshua is also a past winner of the Hannah Beaulieu Vocal Competition, and 2013 finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions Mid-Atlantic region.

In 2010 Mr. B. made his European debut singing the role of Tamino from Mozart's Die Zauberfl te at the Mittels chsisches Theater in Freiberg, Germany. He also stepped in on short notice to sing several performances of Erster Geharnischter when the house tenor became ill.

Joshua is an emerging artist of the American Wagner Project, and recently attended Dolora Zajick’s Institute for Young Dramatic Voices.

Joshua B met my expectations and exceeded them quickly. He had a lovely studio and home and he definitely seems to have lots of experience. He quickly found out what I was doing wrong and by the end of the lesson i could feel myself and my voice becoming stronger. I can't wait to continue my lessons with him!

I just love working with Josh. He knows his stuff and at the same time is fun to work with. He knows technique and anatomy, so he's able to describe all the details of what your air, tongue, palate, etc. should be doing. I never knew how much was involved in singing!
Plus he's always striving to find new and innovative ways to teach. He is not just an excellent singer who assumes he can pass it on, he really cares about the best way to help you improve.
Another thing I really appreciate is that Josh holds you to high standard. He insists on quality, but that means when he says you got it right, you know you really nailed it! Through it all his vibrant and warm personality shines through.

Alan tutored my youngest for in total I think about 8 months in drums and he's amazing. He's patient with younger kids, he's steady and focused on the course material and was always able to keep my easily distracted son in the lesson. He was encouraging and flexible and we just loved him. Unfortunately my son got a little over scheduled and needed to pick an activity to drop and one on one tutoring for drums was what he picked. But we expect he'll want to go back one day as he still plays the drums and when he does, we'd love to be able to work with Alan again. He's an exceptional teacher and on the rare occasion that Mr. Alan would play the drums to show my son a beat, wow he's an amazing drummer to listen too as well.

I have taken lessons from at least 5 different instructors over the course of the past 10 years. I would have to say that Alan is the best instructor I've ever taken lessons from. Not only is he a phenomenal drummer and teacher, but also a great person. I believe our friendship made the lessons that much more beneficial. I am always excited to attend lessons and eager to learn more. My drumming skills have improved immensely. From Latin, jazz, to rock, Alan has taught me how to play different genres. Consequently, he has helped me accomplish my goal in becoming a more versatile musician. I highly recommend Alan !

Professional, patient, and pleasant!

Alan has been my 15-year-old son's drum instructor for five years now, and in that time, my son has progressed from being a complete novice to drumming in a very decent teen band. With Alan, you get solid teaching skills, a pleasant personality, and great flexibility in arranging lessons. We love the fact that he provides instruction in our home--one less runaround for us! Alan is a musician who knows how to teach and inspire, and we recommend him without reservation.
